A little dark.
"This all seems very modern." Susan said as she looked around the large house.
"Yes, very modern. Everything was built to be top-of-the-line. It is only three years old, and everything was built with the latest technology in mind."
"I see." Susan said. "Who owned it before this?"
"A doctor. I heard he was a neurosurgeon. From what I've seen he's taken great care of the place." The perky realtor said.
"From what you've seen?" Susan asked.
"I have the inspector's report here if you have any questions or concerns. There are no issues of damage, and everything works just fine. There is only one problem."
"And that is?" Susan asked.
"Upstairs, in the attic, it was designed to be effectively a third floor, though with a smaller square footage than the second floor. It is all finished and divided into several rooms. One was obviously an office, one seems to be for storage, and the third is a larger room that leads to a locked fourth room. We cannot find the key to it."
"Odd. Is that something I should be concerned about?" Susan asked. Now to see how honest this realtor is.
"Normally yes, but there are no windows, no plumbing, and judging by the plans the electrical can be accessed on the other side of the wall in the third room. It seems to be just empty space."
"Well, if you don't mind, I would like to see it myself."
"Sure."
They walked up to the room and Susan walked into the room, seeing an odd statute leaning against the wall. She looked back at the realtor.
"It's bolted to the floor. It is literally the only thing in the house like that."
"Strange. Maybe this was a display room of sorts? It seems big enough to show off a small collection."
"Of what?"
"Anything. Stamps, firearms, antiques. Not a ton I think."
"What makes you think it was that?" The realtor asked. She had been puzzled at this room, as it seemed to have been designed this way on purpose but seemed to have no obvious use."
"Just what I've seen of stuff like this before, plus that statute or display, or whatever it is. No one bolts something like that to the floor without a reason. So, this room..." She looked at the locked door. It was a wider door, one that one could bring wider furniture through with no issue. "How big is it?"
"Three hundred square feet about. Why?"
"Have you tried to unlock this door?"
"We don't have a key, and if you mean break into it, then no."
"Mind if I try?"
"You are paying for it if you damage it." The realtor said.
"Agreed." Susan said. She realized immediately that this was just a simple lock designed to appear more complex than what it really was. She unlocked it with two bobby pins.
"Oh my god." The realtor said. "It was that easy?"
"It was, and..."
She opened the door and was immediately greeted by light coming from the door. Thing was, they hadn't turned anything on. The light, bright and directed toward them dimmed as a shape appeared in the doorway. Both of them screamed and went to run, but only the realtor was fast enough to get away. Susan cried out and was dragged into the room.
Dr. Chase stood looking towards the door out of the main room, seeing if the realtor or anyone dared to investigate. Satisfied that for the moment no one would be showing up he walked back into the inner room.
Her head was suspended in liquid in a glass cylinder, tubes attached to her neck to keep her head alive. Her eyes were closed and she was unconscious, almost a peaceful look on her pretty face. Good, he thought, he didn't want her deal with the horror of being awake for this. He had accidentally activated his own machine and made that mistake several months ago, and now it seems that people were in his house. He guessed she was the new owner or it was in the process of being sold. Well, there was still a rightful owner standing here, though without his original body. Where that went, he had no idea, that machine was not supposed to be able to do all of this, or at least he thought. So, he now had three things to do. He needed to get his house in order, quite literally, he needed to figure out what his machine had done with his body and what it had done in the last few months, and third, he needed to find this poor woman a new body. Quite an ordeal after being just a head for several months!
