A dark caption.
"The surgery was a complete success, Mr. Johnson. Your wife Linda is recovering rapidly. In fact, she should be ready to go here in just a few moments."
"That seems fast. You don't need to keep her overnight? For a surgery on her skull?"
"Oh, yes, uh, see it turns out that surgery would not have worked at all. No, no, not at all. What we did was a total transplant. Much higher chance of success."
"A what? Did you say transplant?" Mr. Johnson said to the doctor, incredulous. "A transplant of what?"
He didn't want to know the answer, but sometime in him compelled him to ask that. The doctor smiled warmly.
"Oh, I am sorry, we had to do what we thought best, even if it meant keeping everyone in the dark. See, her headaches, they were only going to get worse and worse. No way about that. Since you two were so adamant, even telling us not to release her unless we solved it or could do nothing at all, we, of course, abided by that."
"That didn't answer my question."
"I know, but I thought my explanation might save some time down the road here. See, we removed your wife's head and attached another head onto her body. The head belonged to Winston Crawford, a businessman who came in with severe liver and kidney disease. It is his head on your wife's body now."
"God, my wife is dead?"
"Depends on your view. Most of her is standing in her finest heels looking out the window in a recovery room, most likely by now I think. Sure, her head is currently being incinerated, but you have everything else. I can assure you that you will not be in here for headaches in the near future."
"Oh god, you... is this legal? Is, no, she's dead, how the hell could you have done this?"
"You agreed to our best judgement, sir, and we delivered. Now, why don't we go meet your wife?"
They took the elevator up, and when they got into the room there was this man, looking out the window and smiling, a hand, her hand, on her hips, wearing her dress and stockings and heels... he calmed himself down.
"Mrs. Johnson?" The doctor said. "Your husband is here to pick you up. How do you feel."
"Great." Winston said, his smile never fading one bit even as he turned and looked at Mr. Johnson.
"So, this is my husband, huh? Well, let's go, I want to see the life we've made for ourselves!"
