Slightly dark, but not too dark.
That construction accident was the best thing that ever happened to him. David had been doing some welding work at a construction site, a new office building that wanted to have an old-style industrial feel without adhering to any of the things that truly made something like that old-style. That meant pipes in places where pipes had no earthy reason to go, construction styles that were either forty years too late or too early, and an odd love of rebar showing even where rebar had no reason to exist.
So, there he was, welding odd pieces of rebar to steel beams that would later be finished off with brick or drywall that faked the look of concrete. It was all incredibly stupid to him aside from the pay, which was very generous.
It was his third day there and he decided it would be his last. The company who wanted this building, the people they sent to oversee it had no idea how to act around a construction site. One executive even brought his sort-of goth girlfriend, dressed in all black and purple, come like it was some sort of event. These idiots were going to get someone hurt.
He felt a bit bad for her, she seemed to at least understand how foolish this was and how in over her head she and the rest of them were in an active construction site. She pressed her boyfriend to leave and David, after seeing yet another executive fail to understand how safety worked, decided to leave as well. He agreed to escort her out.
They got out and turned to see her boyfriend executive, yelling at a worker, grab at the worker to stop him and knocking over some equipment, which knocked down a big chunk of rebar that some executive had moved without permission. The force, plus gravity brought it down, right on top of the shocked woman and David.
When he woke up, he was told what had happened. That a piece of, a sharp piece that hadn't yet been grinded down, had hit her head and the rest had hit him. Her head, he didn't ask what exactly had happened, he knew which piece they meant and could guess at that. As for him, he would have died if not for the head transplant surgery that grafted his head onto her brain-dead body.
It was interesting to him, even in those first few moments. Despite the sadness at her fate (she did not deserve to suffer for the executives incompetence) he was almost elated. He had never told anyone this, but he actually had always wanted to be a woman and now here he was, his head grafted onto such an amazing body. While he didn't like how this had happened at all, he had to admit to himself that this was the best outcome for himself that he could have ever hoped for!
