A bit dark.
"How did you ever find a fucking thing in this place?" Jane asked Peter as they both walked in. Jane's soft pad of sneakers contrasted sharply with the click of Peter's heels on the floor.
"I have a system."
"Does a single other living human have a concept of this system?"
Peter smiled at that.
"You know the answer already to that."
"Yeah, yeah." Jane said as she stood by the door. "So, since I'm not going to be much help, what are we doing here and what are we looking for, Peter?"
"Some bank account information I stowed away. Two we just use the internet, but two others we have to go through a procedure. Those two aren't your everyday bank."
"I gathered." Jane said, looking around, a hand on her hip as she used her phone to light up the various things. "You had clients in here?"
Peter laughed. "Never. I used the reception area out front. They were never in here. This was my little sanctuary."
"So, how does it feel, being back here? Especially with everything that's happened?"
"Strange, but not bad. At least they're probably not watching this place. I mean, 'Peter' has been dead for almost two weeks now, right? I doubt they'd know about a client from two years ago I helped with a divorce."
"Yeah, tell me, since you've been very vague on the details, she didn't volunteer for this, I assume."
"Oh, but she did." Peter said. "Granted, I told her it was 'deep undercover' work and I'd forgive the payment she still owed me if she did this for just a few days."
"And she agreed? How much did she owe you?"
"A lot, enough that it was affecting everything else she was trying to do financially. So, she agreed, and when they were looking for me, they found her instead..."
"Did you know they were going to kill her if they found her? Because if you did, I'm out. Seriously, that is some fucked shit right there."
"Honestly, no," he said truthfully. "A beating yes. That I did expect. I didn't expect them to screw it up trying to grab 'me' so badly they decided to shoot. Hell, I've been told that was never the plan by some people in the know. That wasn't part of the plan, ever. Thing is, what is done is done now, and I think it's best if we skip town Last thing we need is to find out they got the wrong person."
He bent down, opening a secret drawer, and grabbed a folder. He looked inside and smiled.
"We got it. Let's get the hell out of here. The sooner we're out of town, the safer you and the new me are!"
