A bit dark.

Candace could not wait. She had saved and scrimped, and scouted out what she wanted but now the day had come and she had it, she had her own car! Granted, it was used and there was some upholstery damage, but it ran very well and she knew how to repair stuff like that. Everything else was in perfect shape and a bit of that didn't diminish her happiness at what today was. It was her first chance to have a car of her own, no one else's.

She got in, sitting down for a moment to just take it in. It was a nice day out and it was a convertible, so she saw no reason not to drive it like that. After all, the weather forecast said it would be a great day, and, she knew, nothing could ruin a day like this.

Max stood in the doctor's office several weeks later, unknowingly wearing a very similar outfit to the one she had worn that day. He was here for his follow-up from his surgery and when it was suggested he sit, he chose instead to stay standing on what were her high heels.

"Suit yourself Max." The doctor said. "Well, we've done a thorough check-up of you and you seem to be doing physically very well. You're healing impressively well and it seems our decision to remove the stitches last week was the right one. How does it feel around there?"

"Like my old neck ends and her body begins." Max said, his voice both amused and regretful. "But that's not what you're asking. I feel fine. Everything is fine. Too fine."

"I understand you've have some trouble adjusting." The doctor said.

"No, I've adjusted very well. I just, it is hard not to look at how I can to be in this position. I heard it was her first car, someone didn't secure a load of scrap..."

"Max, you cannot change her fate. I want to be clear on that." The doctor said.

"I said nothing about changing her fate. It's just we've seemed to lose sight of her. A young woman in her prime and now my head is attached to her body due to some fool's neglect! I, I just don't get it. As for actually adjusting I wouldn't be in here wearing what I'm wearing if I was having a hard time, would I? No, for me it's going well. I just wish we wouldn't lose sight of how this came to be."

"I guess that's fair, but all I can do is deal with the medical. Is there anything medical you want to discuss or think I need to be aware of?"

"No, I think I'm fine on that end."

Soon, Max was walking to his car, holding his purse demurely, shaking his head. As he walked, he could not help but feel anger at all of this. Why her? Why did he get so lucky and she get so unlucky? What fate could have caused this?

He got in his car and turned the ignition on. He realized he didn't have the answer and likely never would. He put it in gear and drove off. What else was there for him to do?
