A dark caption.
Nurse Hendricks, a thirtyish, experienced nurse, walked into the operating room expecting it to be empty. Instead she was greeted by her boss, Nurse Broderick, who surprised her greatly.
"Hendricks, what are you doing here?" She asked, a bit of anger in her voice. Odd, Broderick was normally very cordial. She could be in the middle of dealing with multiple gunshot wounds and still be polite somehow.
"Doing a check of the room. There's a surgery scheduled here at three."
"Oh!" Broderick said, walking toward Hendricks. At this point, Hendricks was focused not on Broderick's sudden appearance but literally everything else about her. On the heels that made her a decent bit taller than Hendrick's five-foot two. On the old style nurse's uniform that Broderick always thought was silly and more suited to middle-aged men's fantasies than actual nursing, or most importantly, the incision on her forehead and the staples in that incision. Nurse Hendricks had seen plenty of those and what they're use was. They were not for just holding surface wounds closed. Not only that but her demeanor, her movements, all of that was very off given her personality.
Apparently, despite surgical mask, that concern was obvious on Hendricks's face, because Broderick walked forward, each step seemingly done for effect, hands on hips in a feminine power stance and as she did a gurney rushed past. Both turned to see Dr. Armand laying on the gurney, bandages around his head.
Hendricks went pale and suddenly it all came into focus. He had been involved with that project that doesn't even exist the one that supposed involved brain transplants. She then turned to see the face of Nurse Broderick smile, her voice calm, now just a step or two away.
"So, I think you can figure this all out," Dr. Armand said. "Like who is talking to you and who was just rolled by here. Now, there remains just one question: do you want to keep your job or do you want to end up like Broderick? I'll let you go to decide that for yourself. Have a good night, Hendricks. Be here bright and early tomorrow. I'll be expecting your reply."
