She looked at her grandfather, a satisfied feeling coming over her. It had gone well. The surgery was quick and easy and he had healed up very well. He was kept in a medically-induced coma for a short time, sparing him the pain of the first several days when his neck would be healing.
Her acquaintance was not so fortunate. She was a pretty young woman, a promising medical student who had the ill fate of being the most compatible with her dying grandfather. Luring her in for some late work was easy enough, the hard part was convincing everyone the "accident" was real, but given the lack of investigation, she guessed she had done well enough. There were rumors and whispered words, but she could not control that.
He would need time, she knew, and he would have questions about the why and the how, but for now, she was simply happy to have her grandfather still with her. She hoped the lies she had prepared worked well enough. The truth would break his heart. Well, the heart he has now.
