Dr. Heller looked at the people walking toward the mall. So many people going about their day. So many things to do, jobs to work, products to buy, services to use. Take him, he had a service that he was going to offer for free, though he doubted anyone would really want to take part in it willingly. Not that he was asking for volunteers. What he was doing wasn't exactly legal or ethical, or even supposed to be possible. No, he was doing a very off-the-books experiment involving human head swaps and he was now in his makeshift ambulance looking for victims.
He did have a few rules. They had to be healthy enough to survive and while he was more than willing to have an age gap he drew the line part a certain point.
He looked over, seeing two people walking into the mall. It was a twelve year old boy, thin and tall for his age with his mom who looked to be in her mid-thirties. She was well-dressed in a designer tan and black dress, black ankle boots, and a very expensive leather jacket. A very nice look she has, he decided for himself and looked around some more. Not a chance he was doing that.
But, he thought as he looked around and saw two more people walking near him vehicle, these two might fit the bill.
The first was a young man about twenty-one or so, fit, tall, vaguely handsome with blond curly hair and beside him was, giving how they were interacting, his mom. She was wearing a power skirt suit, nicely cut in navy blue, tan stockings and black heels, with an off-white blouse. Dr. Heller guessed her at mid-forties and she was quite attractive for her age, especially her legs. They were close enough he could even hear a little of their conversation.
"Yeah, this is why I'm asking you, mom." The young man said. "Uncle Marty's suit look like he bought them thirty years ago."
"Because they were probably made that long ago, Alex." His mom said. "At least I know what looks good in a modern office. You were polite to him when you declined, right?"
"Oh yeah!" Alex said. "No, I let him down easy there. I love him, but I know how he is. He thinks, I don't know what exactly he thinks."
"No one does, Alex. I'm his sister and I have no idea." His mom sighed. "Just, remember that I can't help with how a suit feels or how it's supposed to feel. Men's and women's suits are obviously a bit different."
"Yeah, no shit." He said with a laugh, but got a bit of an embarrassed look when he swore. "Sorry."
"You get that from me, and you are twenty-one, so don't worry about it, just don't do that on an interview. But, what I meant was I can help with how a certain suit is supposed to feel, I can only help by how it looks."
"Yeah, I get it. I mean, I could get a skirt suit." He said with a laugh.
"I'd have no problem with that if you decided that, but I know you're joking. Anyway, let's go in and get started quickly. You never know how long these things will take."
This is true, Dr. Heller thought as he opened the back of his "ambulance" and took out a tranquilizer gun. He had chosen a spot with no working security cameras and both of them took darts to the next within a couple of seconds. Despite his seemingly small size, and nearly sixty years he was a man of serious strength and had no problem getting them both into the back quickly. He got in the back himself and closed the door. No one saw him and he went to work immediately.
There was a bench near a little used entrance to the mall that the doctor dumped them both at once he was finished. He then pulled into a parking spot with a view of them and waited. He had managed the sedatives so they would both wake up at the same time with the same speed. He hoped he had gotten it right.
He had. Both of them came to very quickly and both were awake, alert, and standing within thirty seconds of them waking up.
The standing was interesting. She had expected to be in heels and had nearly fallen over to compensate for it while he nearly fell over precisely because he didn't expect to be in heels. He had to given the credit, though, they were keeping it together. The last two he did, both of them just lost it, screaming, crying, swearing, and even trying to punch each other. These two were much less dramatic than that.
He put a small listening device on the back of the bench, which he would collect once they were gone so he could hear what they were saying. The first bit he generally ignored. He had heard it all before, the initial shock at seeing their heads attached to each other's bodies, the initial disbelief and then the realization. It was rare to see anything else. No, what was more interesting was what happened when they got past that and they understood the basics of their situation.
"Mom, do you know why this happened?" Alex asked. It was a valid question, Dr. Heller knew, but he also knew that they never did.
"No, Alex, I don't. I'm guessing you don't either."
"No. So, what now?"
"The police?" She said, putting her large, masculine hands on less curvy hips. "My only guess. Well, I guess you can wear that skirt suit after all."
Alex look at her with a surprised look then did something Dr. Heller didn't expect.
He laughed. He laughed hard and after a few seconds, so did his mom. Both of them were laughing, him having to sit down as he did, his legs too far apart.
"Alex, keep your legs, uh, together!"
"Oh, I guess, yeah, I guess I need to now!" He said, still laughing. "So, now you need a man's suit. You can tell me how it's supposed to feel!"
"Oh damn, yes!" She said. "God, I didn't even think about that! Okay, police first, then we come back, or I can."
"No, I can come too. I should buy some casual stuff for me."
"You don't think we're going to be turned back." It wasn't a question.
"No mom. Do you?"
"No, Alex. I hope we do, but I don't. You know, maybe I should have let Marty take you."
"Mom, no offense, but if I had to choose a body and it was between you and Uncle Marty, I'll take you." Alex pointed out.
"I'm not sure how I feel about that."
"You know, neither do I, now that I think about it." Alex had to admit. "Anyway, we're all the way over here, just, can you stay close?"
"The heels?" His mom said with a knowing smile.
"Yeah. Damn. Uh, sorry."
"No, this is fine." She said, standing beside him as he slowly started to walk, getting use to how he had to move in heels.
Dr. Heller watched all of this and waited until the were out of eyesight, then retrieved his listening device. He shrugged and got back into his van and checked the address he wrote down. Their address. He'd install a few listening devices in their house and be on his way. He was curious now how they would handle the coming days and weeks. Very curious.
