It turned out, as Hunter and Cassie found out, it took a hell of a lot to freak out the night shift at the local precinct. When they walked up to the sergeant on duty at the desk, she was very much nonchalant at seeing them in clothing of the other gender. Even the stitches didn’t really surprise her, her assumption it was just extreme body art, which she had seen plenty of.
It took the fact that she had EMT training, and, upon close examination of their stitches, realized they were, in fact, actual stitches and not just body art that she called for a detective on shift. They were shuffled into a room to talk with her, but not instantly, as the sergeant explained the situation to the detective.
Hunter and Cassie, by this point, both realized there was a spectrum between fall-to-pieces or have a certain amusement about the whole insanity they found themselves in. They both choose to be on the amused end of this spectrum. It seemed to them a better option than to cry uncontrollably and become non-functional, which seemed to be the next best option. Granted, both knew there were other, more gradual variations of this, but they talked of it like it was a true one-or-the-other situation. It helped them deal with it, and both knew it.
When Detective Hailey Miller walked in, an officer with more than twenty years in, even she had to admit that her desk sergeant was maybe a bit jaded. She saw no need at being tough or overly forward. They had come in themselves, despite the very obvious factors at play here. They could speak for themselves, and she let them. For an hour, she talked with both Hunter and Cassie, sometimes together, sometimes separately, making sure everything was recorded. When both were done, she warmly and genuinely thanked them for their time, offered them anything to drink, eat, or even a ride, to which they agreed to a ride to their respective hotel room and apartment.
Both had agreed to an exchange of clothes, and Hunter started to get his ready. About a half-hour after getting back to his apartment, he heard his intercom ring. It was Cassie with her stuff. He let her up, inwardly grumbling. He had barely had time to pack a thing! How the hell…
Oh, right, she was here on business and was already packed. You idiot, he thought. He heard a knock and he let her inside. He was on the fifth floor of a seven floor building, a nice, new apartment building with a good Mexican grill on the first floor.
“So, this is your place?” She said with a smile. It was pretty minimalistic, with only enough furniture to have no more than a few people over if he so desired to do so. Still, she liked it. It was clean, in a good neighborhood, well-maintained, and overall quite nice.
“I hope so, otherwise I’m in some other person’s home.” Hunter grinned. He had taken his shoes off, and was in his literal stocking feet. Cassie noticed.
“I see you didn’t want to wear heels twenty-four hours a day. How dare you, sir!” She laughed.
“They look great, but, damn, how do you women do it?”
“How do you deal with clothing that acts like a damn noose all day?”
“I don’t, and I’ll quit before I’m required to. Honestly, Cassie, I’d rather…” Hunter stopped.
“You stopped. Go on, what were you about to say?”
“So, I might have had a revelation. I realized I’d rather wear heels than ties. I mean that.”
“Well, heels just hurt. Ties, I feel like that cuts off oxygen to the brain. I heard you need that, though, that does explain some politicians and businessmen I’ve met.” Cassie mused.
Hunter grinned at that. “I feel the same way. But, since I’ve not quite been able to pack for you, see what you want, and go from there.”
“Do you care what I take?”
“It’s not like I can wear it, can I? Or, at least not well.” Hunter said. “Speaking of which, what did you bring?”
“Well, this.” She said. It was one large piece of luggage that Hunter could now barely lift, and two smaller pieces. He opened it the first one.
When she said it was mostly for business, she wasn’t kidding. Including the clothes she had worn already at the conference (which was put in a plastic bag to separate them) he saw seven dresses, three skirt suits, nine blouses, three t-shirts, one pair of jeans, only two pairs of socks, twelve pairs of pantyhose, six pairs of stockings, pairs or dress pants, two pairs or trouser socks, one pair of sneakers, two pairs or knee-high boots, four pairs of heels, and two pairs of ankle boots, plus, pajamas, underwear, and even lingerie. He looked at her as he held up a set of purple lingerie that was obviously meant to cover nothing.
“One can only hope.” She laughed, but her face showed a certain sorrow. “Or, that was the hope.”
“I’m sorry.” Hunter said. “You hoped to get a bit of action here.”
“That’s just sympathy, right?” She asked. “You’re not saying you caused this, right?”
“Just sympathy.”
“Then don’t worry about it. Hell, maybe I can still get lucky.”
“Who, uh, how, I mean, what are you thinking?”
Cassie grinned at Hunter.
“You know what I’m thinking.” Cassie said. “I find a cute girl or a cute guy, I’d fuck them. Hell, I even have condoms now, which I took from your wallet before I gave your wallet to you. Wasn’t like you’d need them.”
“Say I’d meet a man. What then?”
“You’d still have that wallet? Have you seen women’s jeans?”
Hunter laughed. “Okay, fair enough.”
“Though, Hunter, when you say met a man, what did you mean?” She grinned wickedly.
“Well, I’d need those if I found someone who’d want to fuck me. Just saying is all. Not saying I will, but it seems like my dating life just got upended. I’m not sure who I’ll be into now.” He meant that, he realized. He had no idea who he’d want to date. Granted, he also realized, this might be very dependent on who’d want to date him as well.
“Okay, then we split then two and two. Cassie got the condoms out and divided them up.
“So, here’s your half of, well, your condoms.” She looked at him. “Now that I say that, I should give all of them to you, shouldn’t I?”
“No, it’s not like I’ll likely get any use of them before they expire. You’ve got a better chance.”
“Why?” Cassie asked. “You have trouble with women? Well, before this?”
“Most women didn’t think of me as ‘boyfriend’ material. They always wanted me as a friend. I like women as friends, still, a lack of a sex life isn’t exactly fun.”
“Wait, how long as it been?”
“Three years.”
“Holy shit!” Cassie said. She said Hunter’s annoyance at her outburst, and quickly spoke again. “I’m sorry! I didn’t mean to, but, Hunter, it’s been three weeks since my last time. Damn, I’m sorry, I really am.”
“Don’t worry about my sex life, especially with all this.” Hunter said. “We’ve got bigger problems, like getting our heads back onto our bodies, if that’s even possible.”
“What do you think the chances of that are?” Cassie asked.
“I won’t give a number, but I don’t think it’s high. What do you think?”
Cassie sat down on Hunter’s bed.
“You’re the optimist. I don’t think it’s going to happen at all. I hope it does, but I doubt the cops will find anything, and I think even if they do, who can transplant our heads back? This isn’t exactly routine surgery, this isn’t even supposed to exist! I think, Hunter, and I don’t want to crush you, but I think we’re fucked.”
Hunter, at that, walked over to the window, opened it, and looked out onto his view of the city.
“Beautiful, isn’t it?” Hunter asked.
“Yeah.” She then saw there was no screen on that window, and the way he was standing against it worried her. “Hunter, you okay?”
“Yeah, I am.” Hunter turned and looked at her. “I just wanted to look outside some. So, I’m a man’s head on a woman’s body, and you’re a woman’s head on a man’s body, maybe forever. What now? It’s obvious a clothing exchange is just a start then.”
“Until I get back to my home, well, it’s the best I can do.” Cassie said. “Well, at least on my clothing end. See, tomorrow, Hunter, I’m wanted at the conference, but I’m not required to be there. Also, there’s this unwritten rule at this style of conference that at least one day you don’t show at all if you’re not required to, so it won’t be a big deal.”
“What exactly are you saying?” Hunter asked. He truly wasn’t sure.
“Well, I need to know how to be a male properly, and well, do you know how to really be a woman?”
Hunter paused.
“I know the basics, but, yeah, I could use some help. I guess I don’t know your specifics, plus, it’s not like I’ve ever shaved my legs or had a period or anything.”
“Good!” Cassie said, then grimaced. “I mean good, you, uh, damn, you know what I mean, I hope.”
Hunter laughed. “I do know what you mean. Good that we could both help each other, right?”
“Yes, thank you!” She said, her finger pointed at him, though not rudely.
“What time do you want to meet?” She asked.
“Well, it’s one in the morning now, so, I don’t know, eleven? That diner would work. Or here, or there’s…”
“Here outside works.” Cassie said. She then looked at the suitcase that Hunter had, remembering that he hadn’t had much time to pack.
“Mind if I just take what I need for now?” She asked.
“Sure.” He said, helping her pack up what amounted to her clothes now. As they packed, he grabbed his tie rack and she looked at him with as he grinned.
“Want the nooses?”
She grimaced at them.
“Throw them in. God, I hope I don’t have to wear those fucking things.”
“For formal stuff, you will. Trust me.”
“Damn it. I miss heels already. At least my legs looked good in them.”
“Think about some high-class waitresses. They have to wear both.” Hunter pointed out.
“Yeah, true. I should be glad I’ll never have to do that. You, though, aren’t out of those woods yet.”
“No, no I am not.” Hunter chuckled.
Fifteen minutes later, Cassie had packed up and she was out the door. Hunter walked her down to the lobby. She hugged him, and he could feel his dick, though soft, against him as they hugged. As she left, he walked back upstairs to his somewhat-emptier closet. She had raided him of all his formal clothes, he realized, and, as he put up his new clothes, he admitted he didn’t exactly feel put-out about it. He hated those clothes. These, well, he wasn’t sure on yet, which automatically made them better. Once he finished, he used the bathroom, then he stripped naked, changing into a pair of boy shorts and a camisole. He didn’t think much about his body as he did all this. He’d leave that for tomorrow. He’d already had an eventful enough night.
