The Stand: Origins 8
“Hello! I've closed the shop up for the day. On the phone you said you've made a breakthrough?” Vivian said as she greeted Deana.
“I did! I finally overcame the quantum resistance to the dimensional event...” Deana started saying but stopped when she saw the glazed look of noncomprehending confusion in Vivian's eyes, “Uh... I finally overcame the road block I had. I've got a prototype stand put together and it finally works!” Deana finished.
Vivian laughed and said, “Thank you for not explaining the science detail again. I'm not able to follow you at all when you do that.”
“I have the same problem when you go in to detail about your school of magic as well.” Deana laughed in reply, “I do have some more kinks to work out of the design of the stand. So far I'm able to control it with this tablet but I'm working on a way to integrate the controls into the stand itself.” She finished.
“Cool, things are coming along nicely then?” Vivian asked.
“Well, I could make more progress quicker if I had more test subjects. We've been working on this for almost four months and besides analyzing the effects of your spell on your husband we have only been able to transform two other people. The girl in the maid costume from Halloween night and the girl we got from the coffee shop last week isn't enough. I can only learn so much from each subject.” Deana said.
“Hmmm. I've been thinking about that too.” Vivian said, deep in thought, “The problem is it never ends well if too many people wind up missing from one area. I've learned from experience on that one...” She finished with a shrug.
“What's the solution then?” Deana asked with concern.
“We recruit our 'volunteers' from other places of course.” Vivian said matter of factually while studying the mannequin currently on the stand, “Wasn't she more petite? And a LOT less pregnant?” She asked.
“Ha!! She was. I was testing out the adjustment settings I made for the stand.” Deana laughed.
“So... She's not really pregnant then.” Vivian said in relief.
“Deana laughed again and incredulously said, “We're turning people in to inanimate objects without even a second thought and you're concerned about mannequinizing someone that is pregnant?”
Vivian shrugged again and said, “We ALL have that one line that we won't cross.”
“That's true.” Deana replied than asked, “So how are we going to get more test subjects?”
“I just happen to know someone back at the store that I should be able to talk in to helping us out.” She replied with a sly smile as Deana raised an eyebrow in response.
