Heather was born and raised in the small farming village of Oakenglen. The youngest of four children. Her village wasn’t near a major trade route, so it struggled economically. The winters were especially rough on the village. Even though they stockpiled vegetables and grains they did not have any livestock. Every time the village tried to raise livestock it would draw the attention of creatures that the village didn’t have the manpower to fight off. After multiple attempts to protect the herds, the cost in lives was no longer worth the risk. The nearest village they could trade their crops for meat was on the other side of the mountain pass the village was near. That pass filled with snow early in the season every year effectively cutting Oakenglen off from the other village every winter.
As in most farming communities, everyone helped out with tending the fields and other farm chores. Heather was found to have an affinity for finding and identifying the herbs the villages healer used for potions and poultices and spent her pre-teen and teenage years as the healer’s assistant and later, her apprentice.
Drought struck the village on the year of her 16th birthday and there was a real fear that people in the village wouldn’t make it through the coming winter before starving to death. The village elders were at a loss on how to help their people cope. That was when word came to them the Chancellor of the nation of Bliztiche would help villages in situations such as theirs in exchange for females to be sent back to her as her slaves. The merchant who told the elders this information on this spoke favorably of the arraignments he had witnessed. After much discussion the village elders sent an envoy to Thundering Oak, to petition a meeting.
The meetings were fruitful and the first batch of volunteers from the village was chosen by and left with the Chancellor’s representative. The food and the means to store it and keep it fresh arrived three days later.
Fast forward two more years and Heather was asked to volunteer for the next batch of girls to be picked from. She was nervous at first and the villages healer objected violently but Heather conceded to be added to the pool. She wanted to do her all to help her family and the village and if that meant serving Chancellor Lilly then so be it.
A few days later the representative arrived, and Heather was one of two girls of the six that volunteered that were picked that time around. After a tearful goodbye, she left to begin her new life. She was chosen to be a nurse at the tower and was first taught how to read and write and then started learning everything she needed to know to be a nurse.
Heather was a fast study and in less than two years was made a full-fledged nurse with the Novice (white) rank. Once she started gaining rank because of her outgoing and friendly nature Dr. Hu put her in charge of giving new nurses their orientation and making sure they got the most out of their training.
20 years later, she started Ilyana’s orientation.
