Steampunked, Chapter 1

Doyle stepped up onto the small stage, still dimly lit, and cracked his knuckles, looking around at the people milling around the floor below. He clicked the remote in his pocket and the spotlights turned on.

"Ladies and gentlemen, investors and patrons, welcome to the opening night celebration at Doyle's. I'm sure you're eager to see what your, uh, funding's gone towards, and rest assured, I know you'll be impressed."

"However, there's still some time before the main show starts. The audience is still filling our main theatre, and my crew is still setting up. But for now, please keep enjoying the drinks and hors d'oeuvres in this smaller, exclusive room. I've even got a little special private entertainment you might enjoy."

A slender yound woman stepped up onto the stage, behind him, and struck a bit of a pose.

Doyle continued, "I've been waiting a while for the chance to use this." He motioned to the cloth covered object. "It's a puzzle box. I was talking about it with my associate here, Mirian, and we kind of got into a little wager."

He smirked and continued. "Mirian considers herself a bit of an expert on puzzles, so I offered her a challenge. Solve the box, and I'd pay her a substantial bit of money."
