— No, Jessie, you are not going out in that top, — Mom’s voice was dry and firm. — Everything's already out in the open, like you’re trying to get stared at on purpose. Or do you just crave boys’ attention that much?
Those words twisted something inside me. "Boys’ attention?" That’s the last thing I wanted — especially when those boys used to be my friends, and now they were taller than me, stronger than me, and worst of all, they acted like they didn’t even remember who I used to be!
I stood in front of her like my feet were glued to the floor. I'd been in this body for two weeks now, ever since I, being such a genius, tried that so-called “reality filter” from some creepy lady at the art market. “See yourself from the inside,” she’d said before vanishing. Well, now I could stare all I wanted — from inside a female body, as a full-on female version of myself.
— Mom... can you just stop already... this is all temporary.
Mom just scoffed, raised an eyebrow, and gave me a slow once-over — like she was doing it on purpose, making sure I felt every bit of awkwardness in this new body.
— Temporary? — she repeated with a smirk, leaning against the doorframe. — Yeah, right. Just as “temporary” as your “twin brother,” God help us, Jason, who suddenly decided to “volunteer in Europe” and vanished with his passport and bank account, only for Jessica to magically appear — who just so happens to have Jason’s exact damn face.
I looked away, feeling the heat rush to my cheeks. I knew how it looked to everyone else, but what was I supposed to do? Tell the truth? Who the hell would believe something so insane — that a six-foot guy literally turned into a petite girl overnight, even if she looked like him? No, now I was “Jessie.” I had to make up this whole thing about my father not really being my father, and my real dad living somewhere else across the country. That “Jessie” lived with him, while I, Jason, stayed here with Mom and my stepdad. I don’t even want to imagine what my real dad is dealing with, having to explain all this…
— Mom, please… — I started, feeling my hair tickling my cheeks and getting on my nerves again. — I’m just… I’m still trying to find a way back. I’m not planning on staying like this. I… I’ll find her. Ugh… Maybe I’ll just cut my hair?
— Are you insane?! — Mom pushed off the doorframe and came closer, close enough I could almost feel her breath. — A ponytail! That’s the last thing we need — for people to think my daughter is some kind of weirdo, considering how weirdly they already look at you, since you showed up out of nowhere instead of Jason... So! No more cut near me, got it? Ponytail, like good girl!...Full story (10 500 characters - 2 parts) is open to subscribers here or on Patreon
