— Um, Doctor Brown, — Claire said softly, tilting her head slightly and pressing the folder against her hip, — maybe it would still be worth reconsidering the test protocol? I… I noticed a few inconsistencies in the calculations.

Doctor Andrew Brown lifted his eyes from the monitor, where lines of experimental data kept running. His lips twitched into a smirk, and his gaze lingered on the deep neckline of her blouse a little longer than it should have.

— Inconsistencies? — he deliberately stretched out the word, as if mocking her. — Claire, darling, your job is to bring me coffee on time and keep the protocols in order. As for calculations… leave that to the grown-up boys.

Claire, who only a week ago proudly carried the name Clark Huntington, CEO of C&K Technologies, and whose mere presence used to inspire genuine fear in “leaders” like Andrew, now only felt her fingers tighten nervously around the folder.

‘Coffee on time? My job?..’ She was ready to explode. But at the same time, from somewhere deep inside her new body, a strange shiver rolled through. She understood perfectly well that just one word from Andrew or someone higher up could leave her without a job. Without the chance to stay in this lab. Without the chance to take back “herself.”

— Doctor, — she began, hearing her voice tremble. But in the next moment, taking a deep breath into her breasts, she still continued in a harsher tone, — if you at least glanced at the results of the last series, you would notice we have an abnormal shift in the matrix. I’m sure it’s connected to…

— Hm, — he interrupted her, as if talking to a schoolgirl. — Sure? Claire, sweetheart, let’s do this: you just leave me the folder with the reports nicely put together, like always, and all your… guesses, you save for your girls’ nights.

Andrew didn’t even lift his eyes, turning back to the lines on the monitor, as if Claire was just making noise somewhere in the background.

— But… but a week ago, — Claire exhaled sharply, almost choking on the words, — you saw it yourself, the device glitched when the tube burst with that… uh… hydro-plasma capsule, or whatever it was…

Doctor Brown tore his gaze from the screen and slowly raised his eyebrows. His eyes slid across her face for a second, then dropped slightly lower, to her cardigan and wide-cut neckline. The corners of his lips curved into a scornful smile.

— Hydro-plasma… capsule? — he repeated the words with an intonation that made it sound difficult to pronounce. — Claire, darling, you don’t even know the terms. That was a hydro-plasma chamber of the reaction block, not some “capsule.” — He chuckled under his breath. — Who am I even talking to: a girl who, just this week, messed up multiple times how to format a report.

Claire felt her cheeks burn with heat. She knew she was right: it was exactly then, a week ago, when that water pipe burst, that everything… changed. The water flooded the block, the screen flickered, and her world turned upside down. Somehow, reality shifted, and from a harsh man on whom the whole company depended, she had turned into… this. A young “assistant,” now standing with a folder in her hands, blushing because she was being corrected like a schoolgirl.

— But you were right there, — she took a step forward, almost pleading. Her blouse stretched tight over her breasts, and once again Claire caught his gaze on her. — I saw how everything started to act… strange. Devices flickering, data going haywire. Since then everything… everything is different! — She suddenly stumbled over the words, realizing she was repeating what she had already said before, the very thing she had been scolded for last week, when she still didn’t know who she was in this reality.

Doctor Brown laughed softly, almost tenderly, but there was nothing warm in that laugh...Full story (11 400 characters - 3 parts + add. oimages) is open to subscribers here or on Patreon
