Jacqueline’s house turned out to be quite cozy, though far from the kind of luxury Jake was used to.
As soon as she walked in, she was met with a neat little two-bedroom apartment in the suburbs: light-colored walls, cheap IKEA furniture, and a couple of framed photos on the shelf. On one of them, a smiling girl in a blue strap dress was hugging some guy who was much taller than her.
— God… — she whispered the moment she stepped inside. She quickly slipped off her heels and tossed them into the corner. Her feet felt like they were on fire. Going barefoot helped, but the sensation of stockings against her skin didn’t go away. — I don’t even want to know who that is.
The road here had been pretty tough, considering she had no idea where Michelle lived — which now meant where she lived. Luckily, the address marked as “Home” in her phone’s maps saved her. The navigator showed her the way, the keys in her purse fit perfectly, and even the neighbor in the hallway smiled and called out:
— Hey, Jacqueline! Working late again?
Jacqueline only nodded, feeling her heart sink into her stomach. Everything around her seemed to conspire to convince her that she had never been Jake Harris.
She dropped into the black leather armchair, tugging off her stockings. After a while, her phone buzzed in her purse, and the screen lit up: “Big Boss.”
Her heart sank again.
Almost automatically, she unlocked the screen and read:
“Jacqueline, be at the office tomorrow by nine. Prepare the papers for the meeting with the Asians. And don’t forget to wear something more… presentable. You know what I mean.”
— Bastard… — she hissed through her teeth, squeezing the phone. — That was my deal to run!
Jacqueline let the phone fall onto her lap and dragged her hand down her face with force. The tight gray dress pulled across her breasts, making her feel every awkward movement. She took a deep breath and stared at the phone screen again. The thought stuck in her head like a splinter: if Susan had the device, then she had to know how to fix everything.
— I need to find her… — Jacqueline muttered, leaning back in the chair. From the photo on the shelf near the TV, that same smiling girl was looking back at her — the girl she had become, who looked like Jake’s twin sister, only the female version. — Damn.
— Jackie? — came a voice from behind her.
She flinched and turned around. In the kitchen doorway stood a tall guy with a soft smile and keys dangling from his finger.
— I thought you’d be stuck at work till midnight, — he said, taking off his jacket and hanging it over the back of a chair. — Should I heat up dinner?
Jacqueline froze, clutching the phone with all her strength.
— Uh… — she breathed out, feeling her throat go dry.
The guy stepped closer. His blond hair fell slightly over his forehead, and his eyes looked at her with such warmth, as if they had known each other their whole lives.
— Why are you so tense, Jackie? — he sat down on the edge of the couch and placed his hand on her knee.
She almost jumped. His hand was warm, heavy, and her new female brain suddenly noted with painful sharpness how much larger he was compared to her current body. The skirt of her dress stretched across her thigh, and his fingers were almost touching the edge of the fabric.
— I… I’m tired, — Jacqueline said quickly, pulling her legs away as she stood up from the chair. She gripped the phone as if it were her last lifeline. — Really tough day.
— Well, no surprise, — he smirked, getting up after her. — That Michael, your boss, he’s a real tyrant if you ask me. You come home looking more and more drained.
He stepped closer and, as if casually, placed his hands on her shoulders. His fingers were heavy, confident, sliding down her shoulders — but Jacqueline already flinched away, snapping her head so sharply that her long hair flew up like a fan and fell softly across her face.
— Hey! Stop groping me! — burst out of her unexpectedly loud.
The guy froze, his hands hanging in the air. He blinked and frowned, as if it took him a moment to process what just happened.
— Groping?.. — he repeated quietly, then gave a crooked smile, though confusion slipped through it. — Jackie, what’s going on with you? We’ve been together for two years. You’ve never reacted like this before…
Two years? So this was… Michelle’s boyfriend? Which now meant MY boyfriend?
Her breathing quickened. Inside, everything twisted with horror and humiliation — this morning she had still been Jake Harris!
He looked at her with a soft smile:
— I get it, it’s hard for you. But don’t worry, I’m here. I’m always with you, Jackie.
She felt his hand slide higher along her waist, and her heart slammed in her chest so hard that the bra dug painfully into her skin.
— Wait, — she exhaled, stepping back. — Tell me… what’s your name?
He blinked in surprise.
— Seriously? Jackie, are you sure you’re okay?
He frowned and stepped closer, his broad figure looming over her so much that Jacqueline instinctively backed away until her hips pressed against the edge of the kitchen counter.
— You’re joking, right? — there was a nervous grin in his voice. — We’ve lived together for two years, and now you suddenly ask me what my name is?
Jacqueline felt her heart pounding wildly, and all that ran through her head was: shit, shit, shit… She could literally feel her breasts, the way they rose heavily with each breath, while this guy looked at her as if she had always been by his side, as if she were his girlfriend, his Jackie.
— I… I just… — the words stuck in her throat. She didn’t know what to say.
He squinted, a shadow of suspicion flashing in his eyes, but then he smirked and shook his head.
— Fine. If this is your new “game,” then you really overdid it. — He placed his hand on her thigh, just above the knee. — I’m Tom. Your boyfriend. And you’re my beloved Jackie.
She felt his fingers firmly squeezing her thigh, and she tensed up.
— Tom… — she breathed out, pulling away. — I… I need to be alone.
He frowned.
— Are you sure you’re okay? Maybe I should call a doctor?
— No! — Jacqueline shouted too sharply, then immediately covered her mouth with her hand. — No… just tired. Really.
Tom slowly nodded, though his gaze lingered on her. It was a long, warm look, and yet it sent a shiver down her spine. He walked to the coat rack, grabbed his jacket.
— Alright. I’ll grab dinner downstairs at the bar with the guys. Call me if anything.
He left, the door shutting behind him, and Jacqueline collapsed into the chair, clutching her phone with trembling hands. Her legs shook, her breathing was uneven, and her breasts ached as they rose against the tight lingerie.
She raised the phone, swallowed, and whispered:
— Susan… I need to find you, you fucking bitch...
