Today was no different from all the other days you, Michael Harper, 35, a system administrator from Seattle, had been living through in dull gray monotony for the past five years. Morning — off to your “favorite” job, pulling on the same faceless gray sweater and equally colorless jeans. At work — the endless grind of tedious, monotonous sysadmin tasks, and in between — aimless surfing, scrolling through news, random pointless YouTube clips, forums where people complained about the same things you would have complained about too.

Evening, as usual — bus ride home, a takeout burger on the way, then your bachelor apartment where everything was painfully familiar. The gray blanket on the bed, the laptop on the desk by the window, a pile of books, dusty shelves, mugs with dried coffee. Power on the laptop, open a few tabs, type something on Reddit, scroll through pictures. And before bed, a video from an adult site for release — the only distraction from the emptiness of the day.

Every day you told yourself that tomorrow things would change. But every time, that “tomorrow” turned into the same gray “today.” You told yourself: “I’ll find a new job. I’ll start running in the mornings. I’ll meet someone. I’ll move.” And every evening it all ended the same way: the keyboard, the laptop screen, the adult video, and that heavy emptiness you kept trying to drown out.

But tonight, after shutting down your laptop and about to crash onto your bed, you suddenly noticed something strange on the wall. At first it seemed like a glitch, a trick of light from the streetlamp outside. But no. Right above the gray blanket of your bed, an oval crack spread in the air. A bright blue glow, fractures in the very air itself, as if the fabric of the world was tearing open in your room.

You blinked, shook your head — but the image didn’t vanish. The portal was real.

— Shit… — you muttered, stepping closer. — What the hell…

You reached out, and for a moment it felt like your fingers slid right through the cold light. Then you heard a woman’s whisper. It was soft, beckoning. It seemed to speak directly to you:

— Michael… come in… you’ve been waiting for this.

Your heart pounded so hard it felt like the whole building could hear it. You remembered how just a couple of hours ago you had promised yourself — “tomorrow a new life begins.” And here it was, your chance.

You shuddered, not knowing if it was from fear or from a strange excitement.

— No, this is bullshit, — you muttered, pulling your hand back. — I’m dreaming. I’m dreaming!

But the light kept flickering, and the whisper came again, this time more insistent:

— Step in… and everything will change.

Your breathing grew heavy, as if the air in the room had thickened. The portal pulled at you, its glow playing across your face, scattering blue reflections on the walls, the gray blanket, your trembling fingers.

— Just a glitch, that’s all… — you said aloud, refusing to accept it, yet at the same time feeling terror and… a sweet anticipation mixing inside you.

You took a step forward, reached deeper into the light, and felt a chill spread across your skin, as if you were touching something liquid and alive, not light. Your heart thudded so hard your temples rang.

‘Go back, Michael, step away!’ — one part of your mind whispered. But another, stronger one — the one you had kept buried — pushed you forward: after all, you wanted change. You had dreamed of a new life.

You leaned closer, almost brushing the glowing edge with your chest. The voice from the portal called again:

— Come in…

And at that moment, your legs moved on their own. Your body passed through the blue radiance as if diving into icy water. For a second you lost your breath, blinded by the brightness, and the room behind you vanished.

The world around melted away. There was only light, and you kept walking into it, dissolving, feeling there was no way back.

Where do you end up, Michael, and who are you now?

=D Well then, let’s try this format? To be honest, this will be an experiment. I won’t promise anything in advance (timing, length, etc.), but I’d like to try making this story together. Preliminary rules:

  1. You write a comment with your version

  2. You like the comments (yours or others’) with the versions you enjoy

  3. After some time, the version with the most likes wins (or maybe I’ll set up a poll, hell, I don’t really know how this will work yet =D)

IMPORTANT:
All characters must be 18+
If one of the suggested options doesn’t meet the rules for publishing here, or I’m not ready to write on that topic, that option won’t be counted. For example, I mean transformations into objects, pony-girls, animals, etc.
