— Mari! Quit talking bullshit and get the fuck out of here! — Marek barked so loudly that my ears practically rang from the sheer force of his voice. He was yelling like this mattered to him way more than it should. Why was he—God, this was too much. Marek, he... he couldn't have been lying to me, right? He was always so sincere, always supportive of this whole fantasy about "Mike" that had always felt so real to me... So fucking real...

— Mike! — Stephanie grabbed my shoulders, shaking me hard, forcing me to turn toward her. — Mike, wake the fuck up! Do you hear me?! There’s barely any time left before midnight, we have to go! — Mari kept shaking me, her fingers digging into my shoulders, and that’s when I finally realized—I was standing on the edge of something bigger. Something terrifying was happening around me, and I was paralyzed, unable to believe it.

— I... I don’t understand... — The words barely made it out of my throat as I stared at her, struggling to process the wave of emotions crashing over me. — What are you... talking about? Go where?

I felt nausea rising in my stomach. And suddenly, in a flash, the past two months rushed through my mind—from the moment I first opened my eyes in that cozy little apartment Marek and I shared. The way I panicked when I realized I had forgotten all my real memories, how I became convinced I was Mike. How I first saw Marek back then, when there were still those instructions—ones he had written himself to help me. How I had slowly but surely become... myself.

And at the same time, there were other memories, just as vivid—no, even stronger. Memories of my life in that "Town" as Mike. The sharp scent of beer and nicotine. My hands—rough, calloused, used to gripping a game controller and a TV remote. Loud laughter as I sat in a bar with the guys, talking shit about how we scammed some newbie in an online shooter. Stephanie’s voice—annoyed, but with that cute little accent: "Mike, for fuck’s sake, quit gaming already, I’m so fucking horny, let’s have sex." I turned my head and saw her in sexy lingerie, that teasing smile on her lips, eyes that looked exactly like Mari’s, and her face...

Holy fuck. Stephanie! You... You were Stephanie, right? And we came here together to make some easy money, and now I’m...

God... no. No, no, no. This is bullshit. This is impossible. My body, my sensations, my desires—this is what’s real. People can’t just be transformed, can’t have their sex changed like in some goddamn sci-fi movie. I am Apolonia, and I’m just having a fucking reality breakdown after that weird experiment.

— You’re wrong, Stephanie... Mari... — The words fell from my lips so quietly I could barely hear them myself.

But she only shook her head.

— No, you’re the one who’s wrong. I don’t know what they did to you, but if we don’t show up in the main square by midnight, it means we’re agreeing to stay like this—to keep living in this fucked-up town full of hired actors and other transformed people like me and you! What, you didn’t read the contract?! It was all there, in that tiny-ass fine print at the very end! This is some fucked-up Truman Show shit, Mike, and we need to get the hell out of here!

Mari, Stephanie... She was so sure. And my memories of Stephanie were becoming more and more real. But something held me back, kept me from breaking through some invisible barrier—one that was shrinking, weakening between these memories and my reality.

Fuck, was I really Mike? Then why the hell did I suddenly decide I was Apolonia when I had always known who I really was? How did they...

Marek, still sitting beside me, suddenly squeezed my fingers, pulling my attention back to him.

— Don’t listen to her, Polya. It’s bullshit. — His voice was firm, but in his eyes, I saw worry. Not the kind of worry a husband would have if some random brat had caught him and his wife in the middle of something dirty. No, this was something else. Like he was afraid of losing me.

And that... that was sweet.

I even smiled a little—but then I stopped myself. No. This wasn’t sweet. This was weird. Why was he so worried all of a sudden? He understood what was happening.

I turned my gaze back to Mari... or was it really Stephanie?

Yeah. It was definitely Stephanie. I couldn’t have made her up—she was too real. Just like Marek... But Marek had only been real for the past couple of months, while Stephanie—Stephanie felt like I had known her my entire life. Even though now she looked a little different.

Jesus...

I could still taste Marek’s cock in my mouth, and in that moment, it became so disgusting that I nearly fucking gagged.

Holy shit. Was I really Mike?!
