Several months later...
The sun was beating down on my bare shoulders, the salty sea air tickling my nose pleasantly while we sat at a small café by the sea, sipping margaritas and people-watching. It had been a tough few months since we'd escaped from that nightmare in "Town". I don't even want to remember how hard it was to get here, what we had to do just to escape, then cross the border and get at least some documents. It was just a nightmare. But it was worth it, I think that if we had stayed there, everything would have been much worse... Although... sometimes I catch myself thinking that it would have been better to stay in that "Town"... But then I look at Stephanie, and those thoughts disappear from my head. I just couldn't leave her alone there, with that... bastard.
— Hey, are you listening? — Stephanie —er, "Sofía"— nudged me with her elbow, snapping me out of my thoughts. — Or are you too busy daydreaming about your next date with that guy?
I rolled my eyes and took a sip of my drink. — Yes, yes, I'm listening, Sofía. You were telling me about how you think that guy in your class is totally into you, but you're not sure if you're ready for a relationship yet.
Stephanie sighed and played with her straw. — I don't know, "Mamá" —she emphasized the Spanish word with a smirk—. It's just... after everything that happened in "Town"... I'm not sure if I can trust anyone again.
I reached over and squeezed her hand reassuringly. — It's okay honey, take your time. There's no rush to jump into anything right now.
A strange half-smile appeared on her face and I immediately read irony in this look. I'm still glad that she didn't withdraw into herself after everything she went through.
— "Honey"? Really? — she snorted, shaking her head. — You're really leaning into this whole "Mamá" thing, aren't you?
I laughed, shrugging. — Well, it's kind of our cover story now, isn't it? Might as well embrace it.
Stephanie chuckled, but her laughter quickly faded. She looked down, her fingers tracing the rim of her glass.
— It's a pity that you didn't change back, you know... — she said softly. — I mean, don't get me wrong, I love you no matter what, but... It's just... different, you know?
I smiled sadly, reaching up to touch my chest, where two very real and very full breasts rested under my sundress. Yeah... it is different.
— I know, — I sighed. — But... it is what it is. Maybe it's not such a bad thing, being "Mamá" and all.
Stephanie laughed again, but this time there was a warmth in it that hadn't been there before. — Yeah, love is a strange thing. You've really changed and you're not nearly as much like that Mike, but you're — she paused, her expression growing serious. — You're still you. A-a-and I still love you, even though you can't fuck me.
I felt my cheeks burn and I looked away, embarrassed. It was still awkward to talk about sex with her. It's weird, right? It would probably be weird for a guy who was dating a girl, but for a guy who became a woman and whose girlfriend is a girl who looks like a teenager... Well, it's not exactly the most common situation. Especially when you've been officially living as mother and daughter for the past few months.
— Yeah, um, yeah... — I mumbled, fidgeting with my drink. — Thanks, I guess. I love you too.
— Aww, isn't that just adorable, — the sarcasm in her voice was evident. — You're so cute when you're embarrassed, you know that?
I rolled my eyes and shot her a glare. — Oh, please, don't start. Just be a good daughter and don't say some strange things about our... ugh... relationships in public, okay?
Stephanie laughed, a mischievous glint in her eye. — You know I can't promise that, Mamá. You're just too much fun to tease.
I sighed and shook my head, unable to suppress a smile. It was true, she was a little shit sometimes, but she was my little shit.
— ¿Deseas repetir el pedido o algo más? (Would you like to repeat your order or would you like something else?) — a waitress with a strange, beautiful, yet not quite feminine face appeared at our table, her voice soft and melodic.
I looked at Stephanie, who shrugged and nodded.
— Sí, por favor, (Yes, please,) — I replied, handing her our menus. — Gracias. (Thanks.)
— Magdalena! — A voice shouted from a table nearby. — ¡Una cerveza más, por favor! (Another beer, please!)
I turned to look, and saw a man waving at the waitress. He had a big, toothy grin on his face, and he was clearly already a little drunk.
— ¡Sí, sí, ya voy! (Yes, yes, I'm coming!) — replied our waitress and after contacting us she repeated the order to us in Spanish. I don't know what exactly, but something about her reaction, reflected on her face, to the way the guys from the next table addressed her confused me. She seemed... sad. Or maybe I was just imagining things. After all, we were in a foreign country, and I was still learning Spanish. It could have been anything.
— Hey, check it out, — Stephanie whispered, nodding her head toward the group of guys at the next table. — They seem to be talking about something interesting.
I looked over and listened closely. One of them was talking rapidly in Spanish, gesturing enthusiastically.
— Ugh... Sofiee... — I said, struggling to understand what he was saying. — I can only catch every third word. What are they saying?
— They're talking about the waitress, — Stephanie said, her eyes sparkling with mischief. — Something about how she's loaded, I think. Like, she's got a bunch of money or something.
— Really? But she's a waitress, — I frowned. — How can she have so much money?
Then a loud slap made me turn my head towards the sound. Magdalena was standing there, clutching her cheek and looking like she was about to cry, a shocked expression on her face.
— ¡No me toques! ¡Eres un cerdo! (Don't touch me! You're a pig!) — she shouted, her voice filled with anger and pain. — ¡Lárgate de aquí! (Get out of here!)
The man who had slapped her just laughed, his friends joining in.
— They said she's crazy, — Stephanie translated, her voice low. — That she thinks she's rich and... man. Wait, I think I just translated it wrong. I don't speak this shit well.
— Poor girl, I feel so sorry for her. — I muttered, watching as she ran off, her shoulders shaking with sobs. — What idiots.
— Yeah, real assholes. — Stephanie agreed, her eyes narrowed in anger. — All man are pigs.
— Hey, I'm a man too! — I protested, feeling a pang of hurt at her words. — Or at least I used to be...
Stephanie looked at me, her expression softening. She reached over and patted my hand. — Yeah, but you're special, — she said, a hint of teasing in her voice. — You're the best man I know. Even if you are now a woman.
I rolled my eyes, but couldn't help but smile. — You could not remind me of this at this moment... My boobs copes with this without you.
Stephanie laughed, a sound that always lifted my spirits. — Sorry, sorry. I just can't resist. But seriously, let's go. We've had enough of this place.
I nodded and grabbed my purse, leaving a generous tip on the table. — Let's go. I need to get home and feed the cats anyway.
— Yeah, and I need to finish studying for my math test. It's going to be brutal. — Stephanie sighed dramatically, and we both laughed as we walked out of the café and into the warm, sunlit street.
Town... experiment. Sometimes it seems to me that it was a very bad nightmare, but when I wake up and look in the mirror, I realize that it was not a dream. I am no longer the same Mike O'Connor. Now I'm Polina Kowalski, or, as I am called now, Elena Hernandez. And Stephanie is my daughter Sofia. It's weird, you know? Yes, yes. Very strange. But... at the same time it's not that bad. I'm still me, even though I'm a woman now. I have my memories, my experiences, my... identity. And I still love Stephanie. And she loves me, no matter what. So, in a way, I guess I'm lucky. But sometimes, I can't help but wonder... What happened to the other participants in that horrible experiment? Did they escape, like we did? Or are they still trapped in that nightmare world, living someone else's life, playing someone else's game? I shudder at the thought and push it out of my mind.
