— Hey! Haven’t been punched in a while?! — Emma snapped, snapping out of her daze and quickly closing the distance between them, feeling anger boiling inside her, mixing with the intense worry for her friend. Deep down, she knew this wasn’t the time for a fight. All she wanted was to help Jessica, and Dan clearly wasn’t lying—it was obvious from his words. But his words… they set her off.
‘Cowardly girl?!’ It was like a punch to the gut.
— Don’t you dare call me that! — her voice was low, tense, as she tried to settle in behind him. — I’m not a coward, Dan. You just forgot who I am, and I haven’t reminded you in a while.
Dan gave her a brief, knowing look, then pulled out a helmet and handed it to her. Out of habit, Emma flinched at first but eventually took it before she could protest. He helped her put it on, tucking her hair under the straps and carefully fastening the buckle. She felt oddly unnatural as his hands, gentle yet firm, brushed against her shoulders and neck. Awkwardness tightened in her chest, but the feeling vanished as soon as he turned away, pulled the clutch, and jerked forward.
The motorcycle shot off instantly, and Emma instinctively grabbed his waist, her palms unconsciously sliding over the leather of his jacket. He was so close—her heart pounded wildly, but the thought of Jessica snapped her back to reality.
— This is only for Jessica… — she muttered under her breath, blushing but keeping her grip on his waist. Her chest churned with not only embarrassment but also fear for her friend, drowning out all other emotions. As the bike accelerated even more, her tense body pressed against Dan’s. Her ample breasts flattened against his back, making Emma grip his jacket even tighter. She felt her heart hammering in her chest but wasn’t sure anymore if it was from the fear of speed or something else she didn’t want to acknowledge.
Damn it, she needed to focus!
— Hold on tight, princess, — Dan mocked, revving the engine harder, making the bike roar as it bounced over the bumps.
— Don’t call me that! — Emma barked, but her voice was lost in the roar of the motor.
‘Why the hell is he suddenly acting so confident again?!’ — the thought raced through her mind as the bike made another sharp jerk forward, forcing her to cling even tighter to his waist.
She could feel the heat of his body through the leather, the tension in his muscles, the way he controlled this machine as if he was part of it. Her heart pounded furiously, and she couldn’t tell anymore if it was from the adrenaline or something else—something she refused to acknowledge.
— If you crash us, I swear I’ll come back from the dead just to strangle you! — she screamed over the roar of the engine.
Dan only huffed a short laugh but said nothing. He was fully focused on the road, weaving between cars, while Emma, for the first time in her life, cursed her new body. Her breasts kept rubbing against his back, bouncing with every bump, and she couldn’t find a comfortable position no matter how hard she tried.
This was terrifying! The wind lashed at the exposed parts of her body, the hem of her skirt whipped against her legs, and her heart pounded like it was about to burst out of her chest. The motorcycle tore through the city, zipping past parked cars like an uncontrollable bullet. Emma clung desperately to Dan’s waist, feeling the helmet straps chafe against her chin.
But the thought of her best friend missing, leaving no trace, drowned out all her fears. She gritted her teeth, squeezing Dan’s waist even tighter, and to her horror, realized that this… this all felt natural.
Horribly, terrifyingly natural.
‘Focus!’ — Emma scolded herself.
Dan seemed completely locked onto the road. His grip on the handlebars was firm but almost relaxed, yet Emma could feel the tension in his shoulders. Her hands, clenched around his waist, trembled slightly, but it wasn’t fear—it was adrenaline. The bike swerved sharply, making Emma press even closer against Dan, cursing both him and this damn motorcycle.
— Almost there, — he called out, his voice barely audible over the engine.
Emma didn’t reply. She couldn’t. Everything inside her was in turmoil.
Jessica was missing. That was the only thing on her mind.
They finally sped up to an old warehouse on the outskirts of town, the kind of place local scum used to hang out. Dan braked hard, making the bike skid over the gravel, nearly sending Emma flying forward. She instinctively gripped his jacket even tighter, but the second the wheels came to a full stop, she yanked her hands away and focused on what mattered.
— Where is she?! — Emma shouted, jumping off the bike and yanking the helmet off, instantly realizing how much her legs were shaking. Her head buzzed, her heart pounded wildly, but the fear for her friend overpowered everything else.
Dan pulled off his helmet, running a hand through his hair. His face was tense, but his gaze… His gaze was something she hadn’t seen in a long time. Serious. Focused. The same way he had looked at the start of the year, when he had defended her from Maddie’s taunts.
For months, he had been just a shadow, chasing after her, trying to be what she wanted him to be, but now… now, standing in front of her was the Dan who could silence anyone with just a look.
— I got a message, — he said quietly, pulling out his phone and showing her the screen, his eyes locked on the dark windows of the warehouse.
On the display, an unknown number had sent a message:
"Your bitch is with me. If you want her back, come alone to Warehouse 7. If you bring anyone else, she pays for your stupidity. Time’s running out, lovebirds."
