— Let’s get out of here, Jess, — Emma said, her voice tired, but with that usual, cocky confidence, and her gaze involuntarily flicked to the sky. — It got so dark all of a sudden. It’s almost night, and mom’s probably gonna freak out if she finds out I’m out here again at this hour.
Jessica nodded and stepped closer, circling the wooden table in the center of the gazebo, stopping next to Emma. The air, which had just been filled with tension and mystery, suddenly felt ordinary, as if all the magic, all the excitement, had disappeared, dissolving into the night’s silence.
Standing there as though nothing had happened, Emma casually began rummaging through her jacket pocket, trying to reach for her phone. Her hand brushed against her chest, and she felt the firm fabric of her bra squeeze around her body, lifting her breasts slightly and making them sway, while the straps suddenly felt like they were digging into her shoulders. She winced, trying to push the thought away, the thought that this had become part of her life now.
Her hand paused for a few seconds before Emma finally pulled out her phone and quickly unlocked the screen, as if that simple gesture could hide all the awkwardness that suddenly filled her. She briefly lingered on the missed calls from her mom, almost as if trying to process what she was seeing, and only after a couple of seconds did her eyes widen.
— It’s already one in the morning?! — Emma exclaimed. Her eyes grew wide, and she immediately glanced at the number of missed calls: 8 from mom. Her heart skipped a beat, but she quickly gritted her teeth, trying not to let panic take over. — Oh, I’m so screwed. Mom’s gonna roast me, I swear she’s gonna roast me, and without any oil, for being out here all night. Her reaction’s always awesome, especially when I ignore her calls.
Emma, glancing at her phone screen once more, quickly shoved it back into her pocket and exhaled in frustration, as if it were the only thing that could stop her from exploding in anger.
— This is all your fault, Dan, — Emma said, looking at him as if someone had just spat in her face. — You brought us here, probably slipped something in my coffee or sprayed some gas, so we’d all just sit here like zombies and not notice how time slipped away.
Dan opened his mouth to say something, but Emma was already on her sarcastic roll, and she dramatically pressed her palm to her mouth and gasped.
— Or maybe you wanted us to pass out here, and then drag us into some dark basement?
Jessica lightly tugged at Emma’s sleeve, forcing her to turn her gaze toward her.
— Emm, let’s go already, you’ll still have time to mess with Dan, — Jessica said, her voice heavy with sudden exhaustion, not just from trying, for the umpteenth time, to get them to stop fighting and actually notice each other’s feelings, but a deeper, emotional fatigue, as if she had just had the hardest conversation of her life. — But honestly, this is just getting annoying.
Emma fell silent, looking at Jessica. There was some kind of realization in her eyes, but the emotions were still boiling inside. She tore her gaze away from the phone and nodded weakly.
— Fine, fine, I won’t bother you anymore, — she muttered, throwing a glance at Dan as if he were the cause of all her troubles. — But if mom kills me, Jess, avenge me.
Jessica couldn’t help but smile, loosening her grip on Emma’s sleeve a little.
— I’ll do everything I can, — Jessica said quietly, but with a warm smile on her face.
Emma had already turned to leave when her gaze slid over to Dan. He stood there, watching them, a clearly puzzled expression on his face. He silently raised an eyebrow, glancing at them, and his voice sounded slightly mocking.
— Where are you girls going? We haven’t even figured this out yet.
Emma froze for a moment when Dan threw that word out again: “girls.” A picture instantly flashed in her head of her new breasts, which had grown recently, just like her hips, now constantly reminding her of who she really was with such an obviously feminine figure…
But Jessica, already knowing what could happen next, squeezed Emma’s wrist like an invisible brake, not letting her snap. And it worked; Emma only muttered quietly, so softly that only Jessica could hear.
— Yeah, yeah… girls, — she said more to herself, walking further away from the gazebo.
— Emma, wait! — Dan quickly stepped toward her, his voice now sounding a bit more serious than before. — Doesn’t it matter to you to figure this out? With this jester, and so he doesn’t mess with your head!? These books! I actually found them for you! You have no idea how much time and effort I put into finding them! You can’t just brush all this aside; it’s important for you to understand what happened to you… and how we’re gonna deal with it.
But Emma didn’t even turn around, she walked ahead, feeling Dan’s burning gaze behind her, and Jessica’s firm grip on her wrist, anticipating trouble at home and feeling more aware than ever of her femininity in that moment. A faint but bitter smirk appeared on her face, and she shouted loudly at Dan, her voice echoing across the surroundings.
— You can burn them, they’re all bullshit!
