— Emma, I didn’t come here to argue with you, — he said evenly, his voice firm but devoid of anger. — This is about…

— About that I am a man? — Emma interrupted with a wide grin, crossing her arms over her chest and leaning forward. She looked at Dan as if she already knew his reaction and was just provoking him.

Dan frowned, visibly tense. His face expressed a mix of irritation and exhaustion, as if he had tried to explain something countless times but kept hitting a wall.

Taking a deep breath to calm his irritation, Dan exhaled slowly, gripping the straps of his backpack.

— Yes, about that, — he paused, looking at Emma wearily. — I’m tired of arguing with you, honestly. Just trust me on this, okay?

Emma squinted slightly, tilting her head. A flicker of curiosity stopped her from brushing him off entirely.

— Fine, let’s get to the point, Dan. So, I’m right, and this is about your theory that I’ve always been Emma. I’m not interested.

Dan opened his mouth to retort sharply but froze. He sighed heavily and let his shoulders drop, as if drained by the endless bickering. His gaze grew unexpectedly calm, but an odd determination lingered in his eyes. Looking Emma straight in the face, he said:

— There are no theories, Emm, — he said firmly but with composure, straightening his posture and gripping the straps of his backpack tighter. — Or Mark, if that makes it easier for you. A grown man who happens to make a damn good girl, — he finished, unexpectedly smiling as though relishing his moment of triumph. But his smile seemed more tired than mocking.

Emma froze. His words left her flustered. She blinked a few times, trying to process what she had just heard. On one hand, it sounded like the confession she had been waiting for. But on the other, it felt like blatant mockery. Her cheeks flushed slightly, and she struggled to suppress the urge to hurl a sharp comeback at him.

— Wow... You’re... quite the charmer, Dan, — Emma muttered, narrowing her eyes. Her voice was softer than usual, and the sarcasm barely perceptible. She glanced at Jessica, as if seeking confirmation that this was some ridiculous joke. — Honestly, I don’t even know what to say. Maybe I should suggest you become, I don’t know, a motivational speaker for self-esteem.

Dan chuckled bitterly, shrugging slightly.

— Yeah, I’ve got a talent for that... or at least I used to, before all this happened.

Emma exhaled sharply, leaning a little closer to him with a sly smile.

— So, Dan, how does it feel to be a guy who’s basically in love with a man? I mean, I’m still Mark, you said it yourself. Doesn’t that mess with your head?

Jessica, who had been silently observing the exchange, slapped her hand on the table loudly.

— That’s enough! — She raised her hand, demanding silence, and glared at Emma. — Emm, cut it out! We get it—you’re witty. But if you keep going, I can’t guarantee Dan won’t smack you.

Dan snorted but said nothing. Emma rolled her eyes briefly before raising her hands in mock surrender with a grin.

— Okay, okay, I’ll stop. But it’s his fault, really.

Jessica sighed heavily, turning to Dan.

— Look, if you’ve got something important to show, just do it. Let’s sort this out already, because you two are driving me crazy.

Dan glanced around, as if checking to ensure no one was eavesdropping. His face remained serious, though tension flickered in his eyes. Taking a deep breath as if steeling himself, he turned to Emma.

— There’s a place nearby where we can talk in private. I’ll show you everything there. But... just you and me. — He glanced at Jessica, then back at Emma. — This is only about you.

Emma raised an eyebrow, her lips curling into a sardonic smile.

— Are you serious? — she drawled, her voice dripping with skepticism. Her gaze, a mix of disbelief and mockery, locked onto Dan. — You really think I’d go anywhere alone with you? Once was enough.

Dan sighed heavily, his face twisting with a mix of frustration and fatigue. He leaned forward slightly, as if trying to convey the seriousness of his intentions.

— Emm, I’m not dragging you into a dark alley or anything like that. There’s a quiet spot nearby where no one can hear or see us. And Jessica... — he cast a quick glance at Emma’s friend, who was already squinting suspiciously, ready to object. — I just think it’s better if she stays out of this. It only concerns you.

Hearing this, Emma narrowed her eyes, her gaze sharpening.

— If it concerns me, then Jessica’s coming too. She’s... my best friend. — She emphasized the last phrase, as if it was the most important thing right now. — And if you’ve got something to show, we’re going together. Period.

Jessica, clearly pleased with Emma’s support, smiled broadly and added, blushing slightly at the words:

— Yeah, if Emma’s going, so am I. Besides, I’m part of this team now, got it? — She swept her gaze across them, daring anyone to argue. — We stick together, so whatever the two of you are cooking up, we’re doing it as a group. End of discussion.

Emma smirked, but relief flickered in her expression. Jessica was always there for her, and while it was sometimes annoying, she realized she didn’t want to be alone with Dan right now.

— Fine, the three of us it is, — Dan grumbled, tugging his backpack off his shoulder and sliding it slightly forward, as if preparing to reveal its contents. — Just be ready... this might be weird.

Emma rolled her eyes and stood, casually brushing her hair back.

— Honestly, Dan, after becoming a girl, not much surprises me anymore. — She chuckled, glancing at Jessica. — Let’s go. Let’s see what Mr. “I’ve got it all figured out” has for us. But if this is another attempt to “save” me, I’ll regret agreeing.

Dan waved them to follow, and Emma exchanged a glance with Jessica before heading after him. Jessica smiled brightly, nudging Emma playfully with her elbow.

— Oh, this is gonna be fun, huh? And I’m with you. By the way, you could drop that icy mask for once. No one buys it anyway.

— And you, Jess, could stop being so... pushy? — Emma shot back, though her tone was softer when she spoke to her friend. — And it’s not a mask; it’s... I don’t know. Just... a habit.

— A habit of being a bitch? — Jessica teased with a giggle.

— Don’t confuse bitchiness with sarcasm, — Emma retorted, leaning closer to her friend’s ear. — Sarcasm is my hobby.
