— I'd rather rewatch Star Wars, thanks, — Emma smirked.
— Would you like to be in it? — her friend suddenly asked, squinting.
— What? In what way? — Emma frowned, clearly sensing a trick in the question.
Jessica narrowed her eyes mischievously, her smile promising something explosive.
— Well, you know that in all big movies they always need someone with a striking... — she quickly scanned Emma's figure, stopping at her chest. — Let's say, with "charisma". And judging by what I see, you have every chance to stand out, especially in scenes with a deep neckline! Imagine: "Princess Emma from a galaxy far, far away." — Jessica put her hand to her forehead, striking a dramatic pose.
Emma almost choked on the air, staring at her friend in confusion.
— Are you serious right now?! — Her cheeks instantly flushed. — Jess, are you hearing yourself?
— Well, what? — Jessica leaned forward, almost fueling the fire. — Just imagine: someone tall, handsome, with a knight’s sword, and you're standing in front of him, all... striking. And he whispers: "I love you, Emma..." And then boom — explosion, and you're the saved heroine!
Emma rolled her eyes and dramatically leaned back in her chair.
— Thanks, but I'll pass on the love in a distant galaxy. Especially if it involves a neckline and a "striking" figure. — She sarcastically emphasized the last word. — And by the way, you've laughed enough today. Let me have a break.
Jessica giggled, pleased with her joke, but when she saw Emma genuinely flustered, she softened her tone a bit.
— Alright, alright, I’m joking. But you do realize it’s inevitable, right? — She gave Emma a slight nod. — You’re... well, you're going to be like your grandma. The genes are there. Prepare for "striking" and all the other inconveniences.
— As you say, princess, — Emma gave in, but her eyes still sparkled with pleasure.
Emma lifted the glass with juice to take a sip, but didn't manage to do so — her friend's remark interrupted her.
— Well, at least you have style! Skirts, tops, everything just matches!
— That's because I have to. Imagine if I showed up to school in old jeans and a T-shirt. What would happen to my reputation? All those looks, all those whispers: "Oh, what's wrong with Emma? Is she no longer a star?" — Emma theatrically sighed, shaking her head and slightly pursing her lips. — No thanks. It's better to struggle with these skirts and tops than go back to being that "crazy Em."
Jessica laughed, looking at her friend with genuine admiration, and Emma seemed to suddenly realize she had said that out loud. Her cheeks turned bright red at the realization that these weren’t just her thoughts anymore, thoughts she used to explain to herself why she needed this image as a form of "survival" in this body, but her new self-perception, which was slowly becoming natural, had turned into something much bigger than just an excuse.
— Hey, don't blush there, Miss "I-have-everything-under-control," — Jessica teased her playfully, but her words were interrupted by a sudden movement from the side. — And imagine, now you can wear dresses with deep cuts. You'll be even more popular!
Emma rolled her eyes, took a big sip from her glass, and muttered:
— Yeah, sure. That's exactly what I needed. I've been dreaming about those school geeks drooling even more.
Jessica giggled.
— You said when you were a guy, you were a geek too, — Jessica poked fun, crossing her arms and squinting mischievously.
Emma narrowed her eyes, looking at her friend's face, suppressing the mixed emotions that rose within her.
— And you said we wouldn’t talk about that... — she started with a sarcastic smirk, but didn’t finish.
Out of nowhere, as if from thin air, Dan appeared. He was walking quickly, a heavy backpack hanging from his shoulder. His face looked tense, and his hair was slightly tousled, as though he had been running. Both girls flinched in surprise.
— Emma! Jessica! — he exhaled, stopping next to their table. His face was a little flushed, as though he had been rushing or running.
— Damn, Dan, what kind of horror are you creating here?! — Jessica turned sharply to him, pressing her hand to her chest. — You almost gave me a heart attack!
Emma quickly recovered from the surprise and immediately switched to "Ice Queen" mode. She took the cup, pretended to drink, though it was completely empty, and then, leaning back in her chair, spoke in an intentionally cold tone:
— Are you following us, Dan? Or is this your new way of making an impression? Hiding behind the corner while we're having a nice chat, then flying out from behind the corner and "accidentally" bumping into us? It’s so romantic, I might just start crying!
Emma pursed her lips and looked at him with a cold, yet graceful glance, as if lecturing him, and Jessica immediately recognized the "new" Emma, the one that had emerged over the past few months.
Dan frowned, but tried to ignore her sarcastic tone. He took a step closer, and now they could clearly see that he was obviously a little nervous and was trying to catch his breath.
— Emma, seriously, I need to talk to you, — he started, trying to speak calmly. — I found something... It’s important. For you.
