— God, Em, you’re just the same as always. It feels like I’ve traveled back to the beginning of the year, when every time we met, you’d start your "brilliant" monologues about how everything was "wrong."

Emma shot her a quick glance, her lips twitching slightly as if she was about to snap back. But instead, she took a deep breath.

— I know, it sounds stupid, — she ran a tired hand through her hair, tucking away a stray strand. — But back then, at least I could convince myself it was temporary. And now… this started too.

Emma suddenly went quiet, as if searching for the right words, but Jessica didn’t give her a second.

— Started what? — she squinted slyly, clearly savoring the moment.

— Well, this! — Emma threw up her hands, her face turning bright red as she lowered her voice to a near-whisper. — Periods.

Jessica froze for a moment, then slapped her knee with a loud laugh.

— Oh, so that’s why you were acting so weird last week! Well, congrats, Emma, you’re officially a woman in every sense. Although… it’s kinda late for them to start, isn’t it? Usually, it happens earlier.

— I didn’t think they would start at all, — Emma added quietly, fiddling with the hem of her skirt. — It’s so strange! I woke up in the middle of the night and didn’t realize what was happening at first. Then I saw... well, you know. I almost screamed. — She sighed, blushing even harder. — I thought I was dying or something.

Jessica giggled, covering her mouth with her hand.

— Oh, Emma, classic! — Jessica giggled, trying to keep her balance on the chair. — So, what happened next? Did you wake your mom up in a panic?

— Of course not! — Emma threw up her hands in frustration. — At first, I just… stayed silent and tried to figure it out myself. But then, when it became clear it wasn’t the end of the world... I had to ask my mom. Even though I really didn’t want to discuss something like that with her, we did, after all, before I... ugh, never mind, it doesn’t matter anymore. So, anyway, she brought it up herself in the morning when she saw... the stain on the sheets.

— Oh, the drama, the suspense! And what did she say? That you’re ready for marriage now, like some noblewoman in the Middle Ages? — Jessica winked and mimed putting on an imaginary crown. — “Lady Emma, now you can be wed by arrangement!”

— Very funny, Jess, — Emma scoffed, though a faint smile played at the corners of her mouth. — If she’d said anything like that, I’d have run away from home. But no. I was standing there, red as a tomato, and she just said it was normal and… you know, that I’m grown up now. Then she sent me to the store! — Emma’s voice shot up an octave. — To the store, Jess! Alone! I stood there in front of the shelves, and there were... I don’t know, like twenty different kinds! With wings, without, night, day... My brain nearly exploded.

Jessica laughed so loudly that a few people at a nearby table turned to look.

— Em, this is the best thing I’ve heard all month! — she said, wiping tears of laughter. — So, what did you end up buying?

— I just grabbed the first pack I saw and bolted to the checkout! — Emma flung her arms out in exasperation, her voice rising again. — And you know what’s the worst part? The cashier was a guy! I felt like I was betraying the last shred of masculinity I had left. He looked at me like he knew everything! And I... I just stood there, blushing, while he rang up the pads! Jess, it was awful! — Emma slumped back in her chair, covering her face with her hands.

Jessica was practically rolling with laughter, her voice trembling as she tried to speak.

— Em, you’re a walking meme.

Emma lowered her hands and muttered under her breath:

— Hilarious. Truly.

Jessica finally caught her breath, wiping away tears.

— Okay, okay, I’m sorry. It’s just... you’re always so serious, and now... pads. It’s adorable.

Emma crossed her arms over her chest, staring off to the side.

— It’s not adorable, Jess. It’s painful. And uncomfortable. — She shook her head, glancing at her friend from under her brow. — I never thought it’d be this... annoying. You’re sitting in class, minding your own business, and then suddenly you realize... it’s unpleasant. You stand up, and it feels like everyone’s watching. Everyone. I don’t even get how you girls live with this.

Jessica took a deep breath, trying to calm herself after the laughing fit, and smiled softly when she noticed how serious Emma’s tone was.

— What can we do? We’re girls. And so are you. No matter how much you try to deny it, you’re one of us. — Jessica smiled gently, looking Emma straight in the eyes. — It’s all part of you, and sooner or later, you’ll get used to it. And in the meantime... I’m here to laugh at your fails. — She winked, clearly trying to lighten the mood.

— Oh, okay. Just enough about my hips and all that, — Emma waved her hand dismissively, trying to salvage the last shred of her dignity. — You realize I can turn this conversation around to your creepy obsession with those terrible TV shows, right?

Jessica burst into laughter, theatrically clutching her chest.

— What?! Did you just insult Magical Secrets of Love? You simply don’t understand the deep plot and drama!

Emma rolled her eyes and sighed but was glad the topic was shifting away from her.

— Oh, sure, deep plot. Five seasons of the same thing: she loves him, he loves her, but for some reason, they can’t be together, all because of some dramatic past. Then it turns out he’s her distant relative or, God forbid, a werewolf.

— He’s not just a werewolf; he’s a tragically lonely werewolf with a secret mission, — Jessica said conspiratorially with a wink. — You’d get it if you watched at least the first season!

— I’d rather rewatch Star Wars, thanks, — Emma smirked.

— Would you want to act in it? — her friend suddenly asked, narrowing her eyes.
