– Mmm, smells delicious, Poleczka, – he said, taking a step forward. His voice dropped slightly, becoming almost enveloping. – I love your vegetable stew. You nailed it. I’ve been thinking about it all day.

I froze, trying to keep my rising panic under control. His gaze bore into me.

– And you dressed up, – he drawled, his eyes traveling from my head to my toes. They lingered on my chest, emphasized by a blouse buttoned too tightly, then slid lower to my skirt-clad hips. – My beauty, – he added with a strange warmth in his voice that sent a shiver down my spine.

"Not dressed up, more like messed up when picking clothes!" I wanted to yell, but the words caught in my throat when I saw him step closer, his massive shadow swallowing me whole. In the next second, his hands were on my waist. Instinctively, I backed away, but he didn’t seem to notice my unease. The corners of his mouth curved into a soft yet stubborn smile, and I felt his rough, calloused fingers gripping my sides, pulling me closer. The fabric of my blouse stretched tighter, and my skirt restricted any movement.

– Hey! – I blurted out, but my voice came out too high-pitched and weak, completely not what I’d intended. Marek smirked, as if I was trying to prove something to him, and it only amused him further.

– Why so nervous, sunshine? – he asked, tilting his head slightly. His face was so close that I couldn’t help but catch the scent of tobacco mixed with the faint musk of sweat after a hard day’s work. – I’m dead tired, and here you are… – his voice softened, almost affectionate. – Cooking stew and looking like a picture.

I felt the panic tighten its grip on me. His hold on my waist grew firmer, and I felt his fingers, rough but sure, pulling me even closer. My body, unaccustomed to such contact, froze, while my mind raced with a flurry of thoughts: "Is he going to kiss me? Seriously?! No, no, no! This damn experiment has gone way too far! I’m not playing along with this!"

– Listen, Marek, or whatever your name is... – I began with a shaky voice, but I didn’t finish. His face moved closer in an instant. I instinctively turned away, and instead of words, I felt the scratchy bristle of his stubble and the warm press of his lips on my cheek. It lasted only a moment, but it was enough to send chills through me.

– Hey! What the hell are you doing?! – I managed to blurt out, trying to push him away. But my new voice, this cursed high-pitched voice, sounded so pitiful and unconvincing that Marek only chuckled.

– Easy, Apolonia, – his voice was warm and raspy, like he was soothing a frightened animal. His hands held my waist tighter, leaving no room to escape. – You’re so tense. I just wanted to thank you for dinner.

– Thank me?!! – I scoffed, wriggling in his grip, but there was nowhere to retreat. His hold was too strong, his gaze too confident. – You can say thank you with words, not... not this!

I tried to twist away, but suddenly he gently yet firmly turned my head toward him, forcing our eyes to meet. His dark, deep gaze held mine for a moment, distracting me from struggling, and then his lips covered mine. It was a real kiss – firm, commanding, with no hint of hesitation.

"WHAT THE HELL?! HE’S KISSING ME?!" my mind screamed as his lips pressed against mine. Then I felt his tongue, soft but insistent, slipping inside, exploring as if it was the most natural thing in the world.

My body froze. Panic struck my mind, crashing over me in a wave of outrage, shock, and… something else I refused to acknowledge. I tried to push him away, but his grip on my waist only tightened. His fingers dug into my sides slightly, as if warning me that resistance was pointless.

– Mmm, Polusia, – he exhaled, pulling back slightly but not releasing me. His dark eyes shone with a mix of satisfaction and weariness, while a warm smile played on his lips. – You’re so sweet today. I missed you.

I opened my mouth to scream, to say everything I thought, but all that came out was a squeaky, wounded noise:

– You... what the hell do you think you’re doing?!

– What am I doing? – he chuckled, suppressing a laugh and still not letting go. – Kissing my wife. What’s the big deal?

– What’s the big deal?! I’m not your fucking w... – I barely stopped myself, the words slipping out before I could rein them in, but I abruptly fell silent, remembering the damn cameras watching my every move.

For a moment, I froze, feeling panic rising in my throat. A fine? One million two hundred thousand dollars. The figure pounded in my head like a hammer. Marek’s face suddenly shifted – why was he staring at me like I was a kid caught sneaking a smoke behind the school? He was the one who just kissed me like... I didn’t even want to finish that thought!

– What’s up, Apolonia? Swearing? – Marek asked, frowning in surprise. His voice carried a mix of shock and confusion, like he’d caught his "wife" doing something wildly out of character. – That’s not like you at all.

I froze, realizing I’d slipped up. No kidding! Who wouldn’t swear in my place?! A damn kiss! And here I was, looking and sounding like some ridiculous parody of a sweet housewife, and now... now I’d just let a loud "hell" slip out with so much indignation he was bound to get suspicious.

– I… uh… – I stammered, scrambling for an excuse. – Just… dropped a pot, that’s all... – My voice betrayed me, shaking, while Marek tilted his head slightly, as if studying me.

– A pot? – He frowned even more but then smirked. – Fine. You’re clearly on edge. Let’s have dinner, and you’ll calm down. You’re way too tense.

He turned and headed to the kitchen without waiting for my reply.

"Damn it…" I thought, standing there, staring tensely at the doorway where Marek had disappeared. "Tense? Who wouldn’t be after all this? And that kiss… with a man, for God’s sake! This is insane." I reflexively touched my lips, as if trying to wipe the feeling away. The awful sensation – warm, wet, too real – refused to fade. I couldn’t wrap my head around the fact that this was just the beginning.

– Shit, – I whispered, rubbing my lips with my hand.
