Two weeks. Fourteen endless days during which Emma had almost completely cut me out of her life. All because of one damned conversation where I… ugh, I don't even want to think about it.
Emma. My dear Emma. I remember that day so clearly, as if it were yesterday. I was in the hallway, leaning against my locker, nervously tapping my phone with my fingernail. My heart was racing with anticipation—of course, it was her big day!
A date. Her first real date with Dan.
I could already picture her walking into school, flushed, glowing, with that shy smile she always had when she looked at him. I had even come up with a couple of jokes in advance to tease her: something like, “So, did you feel like a princess at the ball?” or “Okay, you owe me all the details—how many times did you hold hands? Or better yet, tell me you kissed.”
I was ready. So excited.
And then...
She walked in. The first thing I noticed was her stride. Not light and bashful like before. No. Confident. Straight-backed. Her hair was perfectly styled, though I knew for a fact she usually couldn't be bothered to brush it that carefully. But now—this was a full-on hairstyle! And her expression...
She didn't look happy. She looked... too self-assured, like she'd just stepped off a runway.
I froze, clutching my phone. Something was... off. I told myself I was imagining things. Maybe it went perfectly, and she was just... nervous?
Either way, I rushed up to her, already starting with my teasing:
— Emm! Spill it! How did it go? How many times did he hold your hand? Was there that moment when he...
— Jess, — she cut me off.
Her voice was... different.
Calm, steady. No trace of the excitement I'd expected to hear.
— What?.. — I stopped, staring at her in confusion.
— I... — She looked away for a second, her voice trembling just a bit, but then her gaze met mine again, and I could've sworn her eyes turned... harder? — Look, we need to... take a break.
— A break? What? What are you talking about? — I giggled, genuinely believing it was a joke but already feeling that twist of anxiety in my chest. — Is this about me not liking your last cappuccino pic? — I chuckled, hoping it was just some dumb prank.
But Emma didn’t laugh. She just... looked at me. Directly, seriously. Too seriously.
— No, — Emma sighed. — I don't even use Insta. Though maybe I should start...
I didn’t notice her expression then, but I caught the faint smile that crossed her face. But just as I opened my mouth, she cut me off, sharp and final:
— Look, Jess. It's just... I'm not sure I can trust you right now.
I froze.
— W-what? — The words caught in my throat, my heart skipping a beat.
Emma shrugged, her lips quivering for a moment, but her voice stayed calm, almost detached:
— Sorry. I just need some time.
And she left.
...
It’s been two weeks since that conversation. Fourteen days, and I was losing my mind.
Emma was avoiding me. At first, I tried texting her, but her replies were short, clipped. She stopped sitting with me at lunch. And then... she just stopped answering altogether.
I could've brushed it off as her being mad over something stupid. We’d fought before, and it always blew over. But this was different. And I knew why.
Because of Dan. Because I, like a complete idiot, blabbed to him about the jester. But come on, it was just a dumb joke! Some weird idea Emma had after that summer when she suddenly started saying stuff like, “I was actually a guy in my past life,” or whatever. I never took it seriously! But the stupidest part? After she let it slip to Maddie, the whole school found out.
The whispers. The teasing. Stupid nicknames like “Man-Em” and worse, but “Crazy Em” stuck the hardest.
God, I was so relieved when Dan started standing up for Emma. And it all stopped! Finally!
The day Dan first stepped in to shut Maddie and her gang up, everything changed. The bullying stopped—no more “Crazy Em,” no more whispers behind her back. But something else started.
Now, the boys at school looked at her differently. Like they were impressed. Almost in awe, like she’d suddenly become untouchable. They didn’t hover around her, didn’t try talking to her—they just... stared.
And what pissed me off the most? When I tried to point it out, she just brushed me off. Smirked like she was some wise philosopher and I was too dumb to get it. Damn, she really had become the queen of the school, outshining Maddie and her airheaded clique.
But what was obvious to me was that she liked Dan. You could see it in how she acted whenever I brought him up. And Dan, for all his tough-guy act, kept staring at her like even a blind person would notice.
They just needed a push! And I decided I was the one to give it.
I mean, who else but her best friend?
I was literally nudging Emma toward him. Telling her, “He’s so into you, just look how he stares!” or “Hey, what if he really likes you? Why not find out?”
I even set them up once after practice, leaving them alone on purpose. But they just kept dragging it out!
And then, finally, the date! All Emma had to do was be herself. Yeah, maybe I shouldn’t have answered for her when Dan, all cool and casual, asked her out—but she froze! Turned bright red, totally lost for words! So I just blurted, “Yes! Of course, she’ll go!” while she stood there blinking like an idiot.
It was her chance!
And then... then everything just broke.
After that date, she came back different.
