— For God's sake, will you finally get it?! I told you! It was him... he made me like this! He turned me into... this... this body! — Her voice broke as she clutched the hem of her shirt, as if trying to show that something was wrong with her.

— Emma, what the hell are you talking about? — Dan took a step back, his face twisting in frustration. — You’ve always been like this! You... you were the damn queen of the school!

— No! — she screamed, her voice cracking. — I... Damn it, what did you wish for, Dan?! — Emma finally snapped, her trembling fingers still clutching his shirt. There was desperation in her voice now, anger, confusion. — What the hell did you say to that... that freak?

— Screw you! — Dan jerked back, tearing free from her grip. His face flushed, but he didn’t back down. — What do you want from me, huh? Yeah, I made a wish! I wished you’d finally stop acting like... — He inhaled sharply, searching for the words. — Like a bitch! I wished... for you to love me! To be mine!

Silence.

Emma froze.

Something changed in her face. First — nothing. Then, a slow, hollow laugh, building into sharp, strained laughter, like it hurt.

— Love you? — Emma laughed louder, stepping back, tilting her head to the sky. — God, Dan, are you... are you serious? — Her voice trembled, but the laughter didn’t stop, almost hysterical now.

— You... you really thought it would work like that?! — Emma exhaled between bursts of laughter, but there was pain in it. She clutched her temples like she was trying to keep herself from breaking apart. — Jesus, Dan... He screwed you over just like he did me! And you... you actually thought you could just make me—? God, you’re so... — She hesitated for a heartbeat, then laughed again, harsher this time. — You saw him! You know I wasn’t lying about what I was, and you still... you still wished for that!

Her laughter echoed through the empty lot, bouncing off the cold concrete walls. She pressed her hands to her face, still shaking, shoulders trembling. But the sound wasn’t joyful. It was ragged, painful.

— I know who you are! — Dan shouted, his fists clenched so tightly his knuckles went white. But he felt it — his confidence was slipping. — Damn it, Emma, you’re just buying into his bullshit! He’s messing with your head, don’t you get it? He’s screwing with me too! I kissed you! It was real! And then you just... showed up, and it all vanished!

— What? — Emma cut him off, her voice shaking now, but not from rage. From something deeper. Rawer. — You... you kissed me?

Her teeth clenched, her eyes narrowing, and in them was something worse than anger. Pain.

— You’re telling me... you kissed me? — Her voice cracked into a bitter, breathless laugh, soft but sharper than any scream. — Seriously? So you... you really wished for that?

— Yeah! — Dan stepped forward, burning with anger and... something else he refused to name. — Yeah, damn it! You!

Emma stood frozen, her lips trembling.

— Dan... — She drew a shaky breath, straightening, her face hardening into something cold. Controlled. Furious. — Go to hell.

She turned sharply toward the building, as if about to leave, but then stopped.

Silence stretched between them, thick, suffocating.

Her hands didn’t tremble anymore. They were cold. Sharp.

She didn’t look back immediately. She hesitated, and then, slowly, turned her head over her shoulder. Her eyes caught the dim light of the streetlamp, glowing not with rage but with hurt.

— You know... — her voice wavered, but she held firm. — I didn’t think you were capable of... this.

For a second, it seemed like she might say more, explain, but her lips pressed shut.

She took another step toward the building, but then added, almost a whisper — but he heard it.

— Loving you... what a disgusting thought.

And she left.

Dan stood there, chest heaving, heart pounding so hard it felt like it might burst. His fingers curled into fists so tight his nails dug into his palms. His throat was dry.

— Screw you... — he muttered under his breath, but the words cracked, and something clenched painfully inside his chest. His lips trembled. His fists stayed tight, but the fury was gone now. Only emptiness remained.

She was gone.

"God... what am I saying?"

The thought struck like a punch to the gut. No. He hadn’t meant it. He hadn’t wanted to hurt her. He hadn’t... wanted to see that pain in her eyes. Pain that, only now, he was starting to understand.

"Loving you... what a disgusting thought."

The words echoed in his head, louder with each repetition, squeezing his chest tighter, burning deeper.

He swallowed hard, staring into the space where Emma had just stood.

— Damn it... — he whispered, pressing his hands to his face. His chest heaved, and he struggled to hold back everything rising inside — the pain, the guilt, the desperation he’d kept buried beneath his defiant mask. — Damn it, Emma... I...

He loved her.

He’d loved her since the day he first saw her — back then, when she was different. Someone else. Her words about being someone else, being a man, sounded insane, but... that jester. He was real. He had done something to her.

"It was him... he made me like this."

— No... — Dan gritted his teeth, glaring at the dark building where Emma had disappeared. — I won’t let him... I won’t let him mess with your head anymore, Emma.
