— Yours? — Emma took a step back, her shoulder blades almost pressing against the cold wall. — What are you even talking about?

Dan scoffed, as if irritated by the question.

— Oh, come on! Enough of this! I mean… — His face suddenly tightened, realizing he'd said something he shouldn't have in the heat of her unexpected rejection. — I… — He hesitated, his gaze darkening. His fingers twitched for a moment as if clenching into fists, but he quickly forced control over himself.

— Damn it, Emma! — He stepped forward, but not with the same confidence as before. — I… I was trying… I thought you’d understand! I was there for you when all those idiots laughed at you, remember? I… I listened to you!

— Listened? — Her voice was tight, strained like a drawn wire. — What do you mean…? — Emma backed up further.

Dan clenched his jaw, his eyes narrowing. He stepped closer, but this time there was no softness in his movements, only tension.

— I mean exactly that, — he exhaled sharply. — You… you told me about the jester, Jes… I mean, me! And I saw him too, I swear!

The slip was obvious. He cut himself off, correcting so quickly, so clumsily, it was clear he’d said something he hadn’t meant to. Too late.

Emma froze. Her breath caught.

— Jessica? — Her voice cracked, then hardened with suspicion. — I… I only told her.

Dan tensed. His fingers curled tighter, and the corner of his mouth twitched, as if struggling to keep his composure. But his eyes shifted away.

— Emma, you… you probably just forgot. You told me too — his voice sounded shaky, rough with nervous tension.

Mark inside her felt like screaming, twisting — not from anger, no. From sheer despair. "What the hell?! She told him?! I knew… I knew I shouldn’t have told anyone! But Jessica?! Damn it, how stupid can I be?! And I… we almost… almost kissed, and I—ugh! Goddamn it! But maybe… maybe he’s not—"

— What size was he? — Emma suddenly demanded, her face sharp, voice steady despite the storm raging inside. She stared him down, unblinking.

— W-what?

— The jester. If you saw him. Tell me, what size was he? — Her voice shook, but not from fear. From control.

Dan opened his mouth, then closed it.

— Well… normal. You know… about my height.

— Your height? — Emma stepped forward, gaze locked onto his. — He wasn’t taller than my knee. Not even close.

Dan paled. But his lips quickly twisted into a crooked, forced smirk.

— So what?! It’s all nonsense anyway! You just… made something up, and now—

— You lied to me, Dan, — she whispered, stepping back, but not out of fear.

He stepped closer, but before he could speak, Emma gritted her teeth and shoved him again, harder this time. Dan stumbled back a step, his lips pressing into a thin line.

— You don’t know anything! You… you just used what Jessica told you, didn’t you?! — Emma was breathing heavily, her chest rising and falling as her fingers trembled. — You don’t care about me! All of this… you just… you just wanted me. Didn’t you? — Her lips quivered, but she lifted her chin, staring him down defiantly. — Jessica… you heard it from Jessica, didn’t you? Say it! She told you, and you thought you could… — Her throat tightened, but she forced the words out — use me?

Dan’s face twisted. His teeth clenched, his expression a brief flash of rage before he forced it down, inhaling sharply.

— And what if I did? — His voice turned hard, icy. — This is complete bullshit! Do you even hear yourself? You’re saying you’re some adult man?! Damn it, that even sounds creepy! If it weren’t for me, they’d still be mocking you, and you’d be a total outcast! Maybe it’s time to stop! No one believes this, and no one ever will. No one, Emma. Not even Jessica. She thinks you’ve lost it. I honestly don’t get why you’re making all this up, but I don’t care. You hear me? I don’t care! I like you, and I want to be with you!

Emma clenched her teeth, feeling everything tighten inside. "Damn it, how did I end up like this, Mark?! Or Emma?! Does it even matter anymore?!" The thoughts swarmed, crashing like waves, pounding painfully in her temples. Her heart pounded so hard it felt like it might burst from her chest, while her throat tightened, aching.

Mark felt it like betrayal. A second time. First from fate itself, and now… Dan.

"He just wants me, doesn't he? Wants this body. All of it… his touches, those looks…" The memory of his fingers brushing her cheek, of that kiss grazing her skin sent a shiver down her spine. Goosebumps — but not from excitement, from disgust.

Fragments of the past days flashed through her mind: the stares from the boys at school, the smirks, the jokes, the blood from that guy’s nose…

It all became crystal clear.

"He’s… he’s just like all of them. Another damn creep who only wants one thing!"

— Go to hell, Dan! — Emma hissed through clenched teeth, voice sharp as a blade, vibrating with tension. — You… you’re… you’re disgusting!

Her voice cracked, broke on the last word, but she didn’t care. Grabbing her backpack, she turned sharply. Her chest burned, her eyes stung, and she could barely hold back the tears welling up as she stormed toward the door.

— Ugh, all you boys ever think about is one thing!

The door slammed shut behind her with a loud bang, leaving Dan alone in the suffocating silence of that empty room.
