—Maybe I am drunk, — Mike murmured, his voice rough and low. His hand, still tangled in her curls, gently brushed a strand from her face, and Jenna found herself breathing shallowly and unevenly. She tried to will herself to pull away, to find the right words to snap him out of it, but all her thoughts blurred into a foggy haze. This was the moment she could have stopped him… but for some reason, she didn’t.

—You know… this isn’t easy, — he continued, not breaking eye contact. —Seeing you like this and remembering that, not so long ago, you were someone else. And now… now I’m looking at Jenna, not…

—Jenna, yeah? — she finished sarcastically, turning her face abruptly to him. Their eyes met, and for a brief moment, a charged silence settled between them. But there was something more in that silence, something that made them both hold their breath. They both felt the air between them become almost tangible, as if something unseen was pulling them together.

Unable to resist, Mike took her shoulders and pulled her closer than he ever had before. His hands moved to her hips and held them gently, triggering a new, frighteningly unfamiliar response from her body, one that this new form seemed to yield up all too easily. She felt her breath hitch, her cheeks warm, and it annoyed her—annoyed her that she couldn’t control her body or her emotions.

—Have you completely lost it? — she whispered, trying to regain some confidence, but her voice sounded shaky, and she knew Mike could sense it. Her sharp tone had lost its bite, and her body, against her will, responded to each of his touches.

—Maybe I have, — he replied in a barely audible voice, still holding her gaze. —But it seems you’re… my girl now, and... — He didn’t finish before Jenna, acting on a sudden impulse, pressed close to him, and their lips met in a kiss filled with desperation and a strange sense of surrender. One thought flashed in her mind: To hell with it! — so what if it’s the alcohol, so what if these female hormones she wasn’t used to were betraying her? She had no strength left to fight it. In that moment, all her struggles, all her attempts to hold onto her old self disappeared in the haze of that kiss.

Mike froze, stunned by her sudden move, but quickly wrapped his arms around her, pulling her so close that the space between them vanished. He returned the kiss with an unexpected intensity, one that seemed to have built up since the moment this new “Jenna” had entered his life.

Jenna felt her body—this new, unfamiliar body that had once only irritated her—responding to his every touch with an alarming sensitivity. Her hands slid up his shoulders, and she pressed closer, feeling the warmth of his hands on her waist. Her heart pounded so fiercely, she could almost hear its beat. Her old life, her former self—all of it faded, leaving only the two of them in this strange, thrilling moment that felt both reckless and inevitable.

—Let’s do this, — Jenna whispered, hardly believing her own words, but unable to turn back now. Her voice was soft and trembling, as if she feared to break the spell of the moment. She looked at Mike, feeling as though the world had narrowed down to this room, just the two of them and this strange, inevitable closeness.

His breath, tinged with alcohol, mingled with hers as he lifted her onto the bed and gently lay down beside her, looking at her with that same mix of shyness and confidence. Their breaths, shallow and charged with emotion, filled the room, and Jenna felt her heart race as if it were her first time.

Though it was far from her first. Back when she was Joe, she’d had plenty of experience. She wanted to say something, to crack a joke and break the tension, but the words wouldn’t come. Instead, she simply gazed at him, into his eyes that held both tenderness and wonder. He brushed a hand along her cheek, as if afraid to shatter the moment, and her eyes closed instinctively. She allowed herself to feel this instant, to give in to the new sensation that spread through her body.

—Do you really… want this? — he asked quietly, still holding her, his voice warm and barely more than a whisper.

Jenna, finally overcoming her own hesitation, nodded softly, unable to say a word. Her answer lay in her gaze, in her gesture as she wrapped her arms around him, pulling him closer. She knew that this moment, this night, this wild evening—none of it would leave them, no matter what happened next in their lives.

They both knew that in the morning, they’d return to questions, to doubts, and to searching for answers. But right now, in this night, they allowed themselves to forget, to just be together, leaving everything else outside the room—their pasts, their former lives
