Lilly returned home in the evening, her shoulders burdened not only by the weight of the tray but also by the emotional strain of the day. Cletus, her husband, noticed her distressed expression as she entered.

Cletus: Hey there, Lilly. Rough day at the cafe?

Lilly, unable to contain her frustration, suddenly burst into tears. The weight of her struggles, both internal and external, overwhelmed her.

Lilly: (crying) Cletus, it's plum terrible! Can't talk right, folks don't believe me, and that Stefania at work keeps jest makin' fun. I'm feelin' all lost, and ain't nobody understandin'.

Cletus, although not fully comprehending Lilly's unique predicament, attempted to comfort her.

Cletus: Now, now, Lilly. You know folks around here can be a bit close-minded. Tell me what happened, and maybe I can help.

Lilly: (sniffling) Stefania won't stop sayin' I talk like some hillbilly and don't fit in. I tried to tell her the truth, Cletus, I truly did. But even I hear how dumb it sounds. This ain't my spot, dang it all.

Cletus, trying to understand, listened attentively as Lilly struggled to articulate her feelings.

Cletus: (softly) To be honest, I also don’t understand your fantasies about this... whatever his name is, that restaurant critic, right? I'm worried about you

Lilly: (looking up) I'm startin' to doubt it all myself. It's just so dadgum hard to believe this is my life; I ain't used to it. I ain't even a gal, so why should I... Oh Lord, Cletus, I know I sound plumb crazy, and I already said it, I'm sorry. I just want folks to understand. I miss my old life, and I don't know how to make 'em see the real me.

Cletus, unable to fully comprehend the complexities of Lilly's situation, reached out and gently wiped away her tears.

Cletus: You are already real, as you are, baby. Come to me I'll hug you.

The hug slowly turned into a passionate kiss and at that moment Lilly forgot for the first time that she was once a proud, arrogant restaurant critic and was completely consumed by the moment of sexual passion with her husband
