“You’d think that, with everything that’s been happening lately, people would know to pace themselves.”
“Death comes for everyone. Why do you think they’re rushing through life?”
“Death doesn’t come at the drop of a hat, no matter how much you try to imply that it does.”
“Do you have a better explanation? I’d love to hear it, ‘o wise one’.”
Two young students were having a chat as they watched the traffic in front of them move at a snail’s pace, all while they had to cross to the other side. A normal occurrence just a few months ago, but following a certain few incidents involving one of the bigger corporations who had their headquarters in the inner city, everyone was forced to either study or work from home in fear of potential contamination. And here they were, after all of that had been resolved… And things were back to normal. Including the awful rush hour traffic.
“You’re really not helping with that act.” The older of the two students, Henry, was a young lad with a skateboard under his arm, a cap facing the wrong way, and an outfit that complimented his hobby. He looked at his companion with a dull gaze in his eyes after hearing her latest spiel. Honestly, he had hoped to skate through the city now that people didn’t have to worry about anything… And yet here they were. Stuck like before.
His shorter companion, Emilia, curtsied slightly in response. Compared to his practical punk-adjacent aesthetic to go with his skater lifestyle, she wore what could only be described as an extravagant lolita dress, the kind that you wouldn’t see outside of the internet. When they had last seen each other outside, she had just been wearing outfits that wouldn’t be out of place in stores that catered to pop culture. It was only after being stuck on the internet for so long that she had gone the full mile, complete with an adorably tiny black frilly hat to go with her new frilly dress. “Who’s to say it’s supposed to help? Help is but a construct to try and barter favor with death, once your soul ends up on the scales in the afterlife.”
“Last I checked, scales were only part of one kind of religion.” Henry muttered as he let his skateboard fall slightly before letting his palm rest on one end, keeping the board standing tall using his foot. “... You think we could just skip through and get to the other side while they’re all stuck?”
“You wish to dance with death? Be my guest. Do tell her that I’m awaiting her next week for the bingo game with destiny and fate, it’s been a while since she’s joined us.” Emilia said, keeping her eyes on the road beyond. While one lane was completely jammed, the lane going out of the city, the lane going inside was completely empty. His plan was sound, but there was always a risk factor.
Henry sighed, narrowing his eyes as he jammed his way through the cars that happened to be stuck. He was thankfully limber enough that getting through, and once he made it to the halfway point, it wasn’t hard for him to drop the skateboard and get across faster by skating over the empty road.
Emilia watched and smiled a little once he waved from the other side. All of that exaggerated stuff she had said was just a way to push him to act as the guinea pig. If he could get over without a problem, then she clearly wouldn’t have an issue either. She just had to lift up her skirt as she weaved through the gaps between the cars.
“Don’t ‘dance with death’ and lollygag in the street!” Henry shouted from the safe side as he watched his friend take her sweet time walking across the incoming lane. He could feel the beads of sweat running down his side, as he swore he could see something in the distance. Something driving way too fast, which now had an above-zero chance of getting run over…
“You overestimate death’s reach, mortal.” Emilia chimed as she made it to the other side with plenty of time to spare. All so she could get right up into the boy’s face and smugly smile, just like she always did whenever he got worried about her. He was more protective than anybody his age, especially concerning her.
Henry blushed as she invaded his personal space, grumbling and mumbling as he tried to back away. “Stop that. I just didn’t want my friend to get run over by a truck. You know that. Don’t make it seem like anything more than that.” He muttered defensively, stuffing his hands into his pockets as he kept one leg on the ground and one on the skateboard, stabilizing himself while trying to shy away from the girl that had teased him.
“Regardless, we’ve crossed the River Styx. It’s about time to return to our homes, so that we may-”
In that split second, when their guards had been lowered, disaster struck. Not in the form of a truck running into either of them because it turned too early, but rather something a bit more volatile thanks to it turning late.
Henry barely had a moment to launch himself backward with the right placed kick, but his lolita companion was not so lucky. A barrel full of industrial strength pink dye nearly collided with her, with the contents spewing all across her body as it flew past her. The only part of her that had been left uncovered was her head, the rest was completely smothered in pink.
“Emilia!”
Emilia stared at herself as her mind caught up with reality, blinking in disgust as she saw all the pink stuff pouring off her body. “Well. This is not how I anticipated my day unfolding.” The gothic lolita muttered as she tried to wipe herself off, hoping that she could somehow wash all of this pink dye off. “I’ll have to raise a formal complaint to whoever owned that truck. Did you get the plate’s number, Henry?”
Henry remained silent as he just pointed towards her outfit.
“Has death taken your voice, or are you just…” Emilia muttered as she looked down at her body, and her disgust grew further as she had to step back ever slightly.
Not only had her outfit been smothered in an obnoxiously bright shade of pink, but the entire outfit seemed to have changed. Sure, it still maintained the same sort of frilly layers as the original lolita dress, but they were a lot more poofy after the paint had sunk in. Combine that with the fact that pink didn’t fit her aesthetic at all, and that it felt like she had been stuffed into one giant glove with how thick the insides of the outfit was, and she wasn’t exactly enjoying any part of this.
“This is… This is going to be difficult to wash.” Was all that Emilia could manage to say as she tugged on her outfit. Was this the universe trying to play a trick on her after everything she had done to tease her friend? Or was it just simple bad luck striking her when she was at her peak?
“Yeah. But, uh, that’s not the problem.” Henry said as he let his finger drift downward alongside his eyes. Because the dye that had seeped into his friend wasn’t done, it seemed. Not even close.
Emilia already dreaded how it could get worse. But this time, as she looked below her dress, it wasn’t disgust that filled her heart. It was a sense of wonder and curiosity.
The boring asphalt below her feet had turned into some sort of soft carpet-like material. Like the kind that you’d step on if you were an esteemed guest for some sort of movie premiere. The only strange thing about it was the pink color, but it was still something that many girls wanted at some point in their lives.
Slowly but surely, the gears inside Emilia’s brain started to turn, as she took a few steps forward. Sure enough, her garishly tall and pink heels with plenty of jewels encrusted on top were leaving blotches of dye on the ground below, which was quickly turning into the same sort of carpet-like path. Just like the spot where she had been drenched.
“Henry.” She said, with a bright grin on her face. So uncharacteristically bright too, like something had been flipped inside her mind. “Do you know what this means? Do you fathom what this implies? Do you think you can comprehend what now falls into my hands?”
He shook his head, with a slightly disappointed look on his face. “You’re not going to try and see what all this weird dye can do, right?” He really didn’t want to deal with this right now. Once Emilia got going, it was hard to stop her. And if she cut loose with this dye, there was no way that people weren’t going to get… Well, probably not hurt exactly but he wasn’t expecting good things from the same kind of dye that seemed to transform the world around them.
Emilia kept grinning. The formerly gothic girl couldn’t stop herself from swinging her arms towards the dull shop straight ahead of them, letting the pink dye get flung straight ahead. The sheer intent behind her swing was enough to make the globs of pink bigger, making sure that the entire shop got covered thanks to one simple swing of her arms…
The second that the dye made contact, the shop seemed to warp in response to the powerful dye. From a simple shop that sold all sorts of normal clothes, it was now a pastel goth boutique that sold the same sort of clothes that Emilia loved, except in the same awful color as the dye.
It didn’t stop with the shop. Emilia couldn’t be stopped. She quickly ran down the street, the ground below her turning just as overly cutesy as the rest of her body while she fired off more and more of that dye, turning the whole street into something devoted to pastel gothic lolitas like her.
And the street wasn’t enough either! She flung some more of that dye straight towards the cars on the other side of the street. They all changed, either into sports cars with the most cutesy shit plastered all over them, or garish colored carriages with cute ponies carrying them along. It didn’t matter that one was clearly faster than the other, the sheer aesthetic was more important to somebody who had gone dye-crazy like Emilia.
“Emilia! Stop already!” Henry shouted as he skated after her, only to look below and realize that the dye had turned his skateboard into a pair of four-wheeled roller skates with a bunch of jewels plastered all over them. At least it wasn’t hard to adjust, because if the dyed ground did that to his skateboard, he’d hate to feel it directly.
The pastel goth laughed as she turned towards her friend, idly raising one of her hands towards her face to rest her head on it. “Look, Henry! Look at how the world changes once it’s been… dyed…”
Henry watched in horror as the dye spread from the palm of the girl’s hand straight onto her face. The one part of her body that hadn’t been dyed was now being consumed, her pale skin warming up as pink makeup emphasized how pretty her eyes were. All while her hair kept swirling around into massive drills while the dye soaked into every little individual hair, giving her excessive lolita drills that only served to exaggerate her aesthetic now that she had been completely dyed.
He couldn’t stop. The skates wouldn’t let him. All that he could do was skate past the dyed girl, hoping that she wouldn’t catch him as her awful giggling started echoing all around.
He didn’t get far. The pink dye from his skates caused the ground underneath him to turn into a proper puddle, causing him to fall onto his knees. The last thing he saw before the dye started to consume him as well…
Was the bright smile of his dyed-pink friend, her giggles haunting him until he started giggling along...
