The table fell silent as they watched Dominica whisper her final words: "this is a nice ending anyway..." and petrify in front of their eyes.T he players all stared at their friend, now transformed into a motionless statue. Finally Amy spoke, her voice afraid. "What... happened to Dominica?"
"Her character couldn't resist the power of the gorgon... and it seems that powerful magic has overcome Dominica herself," the DM answered her matter-of-factly.
"Can we... turn her back?" asked Amy with trepidation.
"I imagine you probably can," answered the DM, "if you all manage to escape from this dungeon, with the gorgon and all her allies."
Amy blinked. "So our... characters need to win to change Dominica back from a statue?"
"Yes, exactly."
"But Dominica's paladin was the strongest of us, and now she's petrified!" Amy wailed. She looked at her character sheet frantically, the other players doing likewise--players and characters racking their brains for some forgotten edge or advantage. "Are the rest of us going to end up like her if we don't make it?"
"It seems like you're succumbing to the power of the dungeon already," the DM raised an eyebrow meaningfully at Amy. Suddenly cognizant that she herself was stripped to the waist, Amy shivered in cold and anxiety.
"Moradin save us," murmured Amy, both in and out of character. "Let's do our best, team..."
"Good luck to you all," the DM said as encouragingly as he could, "...and if that luck fails, well, Dominica doesn't seem to mind the way she ended up, even if it's not exactly what she hoped would happen at the start..."
