"... our newest products in Charlie's Body Shop!"
Jenna turns off her TV with a worried look on her face. She's been late on her rent lately... not for the first time. Lately her landlord shouted at her threatening to kick her out if she doesn't manage to get the rent within the next week.
She even asked her boss at her work at the diner for an advance of money, but he refused.
The only way for her to maybe keep her flat - she just saw it on the TV.
She touches her throat before dressing up to leave the house.
On the way to Charlie's she starts to wonder what the shop will be like. It's not like she has been there at anytime, not to mention that she can't afford to get anything from there.
"Charlie's is the place for the beauties and the rich..."
There it is, Charlie's. A store as big as a mall. As she enters the building, she is stunned by the massive hall, covered with a red carpet leading to the reception and tiles so clean, that they shimmer in the light.
Even though she dressed as well as she could, Jenna can't do different but to feel underdressed.
Standing there, looking around, she almost frightens as a voice calls: "Miss? Over here, no worries, we don't bite."
Snipping back into reality she shakes her head and slowly walks over to the reception. "Buying or selling, miss?" Jenna let's out a sigh, "Selling, I'm afraid."
The receptionist comes out from behind the counter, "Over here, Miss."
"We take good care of every part we sell. Just see for yourself.", Jenna is guided along a multiple of shelves with different body parts. Arms... chests... Jenna stops at the heads section touching her throat again. "Ah I see, don't worry, Miss. Quality and care is one of our highest rules unlike those black market sellers."
The receptionist opens a door leading deeper into the building into a factory-like structure.
"There is a black market for this?", Jenna wonders. "Indeed, Miss. Demand for body parts is high and offer are rather slim, especially on the category on legs. My boyfriend indeed is victim of the black market." Jenna looks surprised. "He was out one night drinking and passed out. After he woke up he found himself being half the man he used to be - quite literally."
Jenna holds her hand infront of her mouth, "Wait what?"
"Yep." the receptionist answered, "he found his whole lower half missing. At least insurance helped though...", the receptionist starts giggling, "... he isn't that much more of a man yet."
Jenna asks wondering: "You mean..." Just a silent nod comes from the other side.
"The good thing is...", the receptionist says, "... he's actually learning a lot from this experience. He's even thinking about... well... expanding this experience. Maybe I'm gonna have a girlfriend soon, who knows?" "Anyway..." Jenna interrupts her giggling, "How does this all even work. I mean, from what I know, body parts with unmatching DNA should be, sort of, fighting each other."
"Ah, you mean that the host rejects foreign DNA? Yes, that would normally happen. But we have a solution for this." She brings out a syringe, "this is our adaptive serum. It makes the host body replace the DNA in the foreign cells with their own DNA thus removing the problem of rejection. Not only is this the safer way for the human themselves, but also in case of police investigations there is matching DNA, no matter if the person got new body parts from us or not. That's also why our company is the only one to actually be allowed to trade in body parts."
Jenna takes a look around and sees workers separating limps from a torso and sees a head sitting next to it, smiling. "Just mail me to my friend, when you're done, that will be a hell of a surprise for him! Ray will be so happy, seeing me like this!"
The receptionist notices Jenna's look, "See? We take care of everyone and every part, noone regretted selling or buying either. I tell you what. When you sell your pretty head, you'll have two months time to redeem your head anytime for the same payment." Jenna looks nervous, touching her throat again. The receptionist keeps smiling, "So... how much neck should we leave on you?"
Jenna is fighting for words and remembers a friend who sold her head for charity. "None. It should look like there never has been a head before..." Jenna swallows deeply, not wanting to realise what she just said. But she has to do it... otherwise she has to sleep on the streets...
"Oh... a clean one? Rather rare these days." She winks at Jenna. "To explain it to you. Once your head is could off, your body will become your host and your head will fall asleep. You'll lose any sense of aside from touch. You'll need to keep stay motionless for a while after that, because we will make you an artificial head with sensors for smell, sight and you can even hear and speak with it."
Jenna takes a deep breath. "So... Where... Do you do it?"
She grabs Jennas hand and leads her over to a chair which looks like it has a big hair dryer on it. "Oh... I see."
Jenna sits down, shaking, nervous. Her head is going to be cut off and taken away. Does she really want that? Too late. The dryer it lowering down already and she doesn't hear a lot, just muffled, "Clean." A cold shiver and Jenna loses most of her senses. She feels the chair shivering as the dryer moves up. "Is this it?" She can't talk. She doesn't hear anything. "It's done... I should hold still" Two hands hold her shoulders in place. "Ou!" Jenna suddenly feels a goo-like substance touching a place that never was there before. "Is that...?"
Suddenly senses rush into existance. Jenna sees the receptionist from before. "Hello there?" Jenna brings her hands to where her head has been but feels nothing but skin, but blocks her sight. "Hmmmm...I will need getting used to... Wait. How do I eat?" "Just hold it to your shoulders and think of eating." Jenna sits there motionless for a few seconds.
"Can I... see my head? I... kind of want to say goodbye." "Of course."
They open the "dryer" and Jenna sees her for head, sleeping. It looks like the most peaceful thing in the world. She starts petting her head. "I hope your new owner takes good care of you."
"Well. if you want to talk monetary measures... just follow me and we'll do the contract." The receptionist leads Jenna to a room nearby. Jenna starts to think about what will be. WIll everything be better now? Will she ever see her head again? "Well. The payment should be enough for half a year...", saying this she reminds that her boss offers a raise for headless waitresses...
Maybe... just maybe... things will be better headless.
