Continued from @Amethyst-DGH tale below
As Hannah mentions...
"I close the door of the Jaguar with a soft, decisive click. The violet pulsing at my roots cools to a steady, analytical hum. This is not a battlefield; this is a ledger, and the numbers are profoundly wrong.
"We are not going in," I say, my voice crisp and authoritative.
Amethyst stares at me from the passenger seat, the jagged cut of her black and purple-highlighted hair hiding one furious eye. "She shot me, Hannah."
"And she wants you to die for Maximillian's debts," I reply flatly. "I do not let my assets liquidate themselves over someone else's bad bookkeeping. A forensic accountant must always recognize when a trap is not meant for her, but for someone whose ledger is bleeding into hers. If this imposter is using intel sourced directly from Maximillian Holt—the Trickster who is known to travel to other realms and treat with Fae and other entities—then walking through that front door is playing directly into the enemy's hands."
I pull out my encrypted phone. "Milly, keep the engine running. Amethyst, keep your sniper scope trained on the Athene projection in the window. If it moves aggressively, dispel it. But nobody engages until I consult the primary stakeholders."
I hit the speed dial for the Blockhouse secure line, routing a conference call to two very specific individuals. The line clicks, connecting to Maximillian Holt, and, crucially, to Jenny.
Jenny is no longer the quiet IT administrator she once was; she is a Barbarian Princess, clad in chainmail, wielding a greatsword. She now travels to the otherworlds, going wherever adventure or danger requires her. If there is an abyssal threat tracking Max, Jenny is exactly the kind of heavy artillery we need on standby.
"Maximillian. Jenny," I say, stripping away any pleasantries. "I am currently sitting outside the Golden Rose Cafe. There is an entity sitting in the window wearing my face, projecting an illusion of Athene."
I hear a sharp intake of breath over the line. I know Maximillian is listening intently.
"Amethyst is with me. She was shot by this entity a week ago," I continue, dropping the data points like heavy stones. "The entity’s magical signature is an inversion of my own—a hostile, crushing extraction magic—mixed with the heavy scent of sea salt and the abyss. This is a targeted diorama, Max. And it's built using your intel. Your ledger has caught up with you, and it is currently drinking an Americano in my face. Identify the threat."
The line is quiet for just a fraction of a second longer—a rare pause in the Architect's usually unbroken rhythm. When Maximillian finally speaks, the sharp, crystalline audio of the encrypted line catches the faint rustle of bespoke fabric.
"Hanavari, darling, 'liquidate' is such an aggressive, terrestrial term," Maximillian murmurs. His voice is a smooth, unflappable purr, completely devoid of the panic my forensic assessment might have warranted. "I prefer to think of it as an... outstanding conceptual lease."
A soft, theatrical sigh echoes over the speaker. "Sea salt and crushing pressure. Yes. That would be the Benthic Sovereign. A rather tedious collection of deep-trench bureaucrats who reside in the abyssal layers of the Fae ecosystem. They don't deal in money or traditional favors, Hannah. They deal in gravity, dark water, and absolute zero."
There is the distinct clink of a crystal glass being set down on a hard surface. "Your audit is entirely correct, of course. The trap is meant for me. A few months ago, I required a tremendous amount of absolute, crushing atmospheric pressure to compact a rather stubborn Arcadian geode into something that would fit in my pocket. I simply... reallocated a few million tons of their localized physics. It seems they are remarkably petty about their intellectual property, and have come to repossess the pressure."
He hums thoughtfully, the sound vibrating with a mischievous, analytical edge. "Using your face to lure Amethyst, though? How utterly derivative. The Benthic entities have zero aesthetic imagination. They merely mimic whatever looks most unyielding in the local environment, and I suppose a forensic accountant with a violent streak fits the bill perfectly."
"Do not let Amethyst shoot the projection," Maximillian commands, his tone suddenly shifting from amused understatement to razor-sharp authority. "If she pierces the illusion with a kinetic round, she won't hit flesh. She’ll puncture a high-pressure magical containment vessel. That cafe, and everything within a three-block radius, will instantly be subjected to the atmospheric pressure of the Marianas Trench. It is a structural hazard, not a biological one."
"Jenny?" Maximillian's voice smooths out again, addressing the newly minted Barbarian Princess on the line. "Do bring the greatsword, would you? But keep it sheathed until I say otherwise. These creatures respond poorly to blunt force, but they do respect a grand, theatrical display of martial intent."
"Hold your position, Hanavari," Maximillian instructs, the smile returning to his voice. "Keep the engine running, and keep everyone inside the Jaguar. I am stepping out of the Blockhouse now. Give me precisely three minutes to recalibrate the local atmospheric pressure around the Golden Rose. I'm going to walk through the front door and inform our aquatic imposter that their structural lease is officially void."
The line clicks dead.
Exactly three minutes later, the air outside the Golden Rose Cafe shivers. Through Amethyst's sniper scope, the street looks entirely normal, until the heavy glass front doors of the cafe swing outward.
Maximillian Holt steps onto the pavement. He is impeccably dressed in his bespoke three-piece suit, the dark iridescent teal and purple diamond harlequin pattern shimmering unnaturally against the mundane urban backdrop. His jet-black hair is slicked back severely, and a dangerously calm, confident smile plays on his lips.
The air immediately surrounding him is visibly warping and fracturing—a violent clash of impossible physics. Heavy, dark, watery distortions of deep-abyssal crushing pressure are pressing inward from the cafe, attempting to flatten him. Maximillian doesn't even break his stride. He raises his hands, and glowing, geometric lines of blue alchemical magic radiate from his fingertips. He isn't fighting the pressure with brute force; he is effortlessly repelling and unspooling it, rewriting the localized physics with elegant, sweeping, tailor-like gestures.
Behind him, the cafe's front windows crack under the immense strain, instantly covered in an unnatural frost and thick sea-salt condensation. Maximillian simply adjusts his cuffs, completely at home in the chaos, stepping forward to balance his books.
The encrypted line on the Jaguar’s dashboard crackles, broadcasting a soft, rhythmic tapping. Maximillian has left his comms open. A deliberate choice. He wants the auditor to hear the settlement.
Through the crosshairs of Amethyst’s scope, I watch Maximillian push open the frosted, groaning glass doors of the Golden Rose Cafe. The little bell above the door doesn't ring; it gives a dull, strangled clink, the sound suppressed by the sheer density of the air inside.
"Amethyst," I murmur, my eyes fixed on the street. "Report the interior telemetry."
"It's like looking into a fish tank," Amethyst whispers, her finger resting rigidly beside the trigger guard. "The tables, the chairs... they’re starting to float. The atmospheric pressure in there is holding them in suspension. The barista is passed out behind the counter. And the target is standing up."
Over the comms, Maximillian’s voice drifts through, smooth and entirely unbothered by the fact that he has just walked into the deep-sea equivalent of a trash compactor.
"I must say," Maximillian’s voice echoes, accompanied by the sound of his leather shoes echoing sharply against the linoleum, "mimicking my forensic accountant is a bold negotiation tactic. But you've gotten the posture all wrong. Hanavari’s spine is built of titanium and spite. Yours is clearly made of cartilage."
Inside the cafe, the Benthic imposter wearing my face tilts its head. Even from this distance, I can see the illusion failing. The edges of its silhouette blur into dark, oily water. It raises a hand, and the heavy, abyssal gravity inside the room surges toward Maximillian like a tidal wave.
"Max, structural failure imminent," I warn over the line, watching the cafe's support pillars begin to buckle inward.
"Just a bit of a row, Hannah, nothing I can't tidy up," he replies breezily.
Through the glass, I see Maximillian stop in the center of the room. He doesn't brace for impact. Instead, he reaches inside the jacket of his harlequin suit and produces a crystal-clear glass cylinder, capped with brass. With a flick of his thumb, he unseals it.
A vibrant, swirling blue gas begins to pour from the cylinder, illuminating the dim, watery interior of the cafe.
"You came to collect a debt of pressure," Maximillian says, his tone shifting into the crisp, patronizing cadence of a university lecturer. "But you've brought it into a terrestrial environment. How dreadfully inefficient. Let us repackage it into something more... modular."
He steps directly into the crushing wave of dark magic. As the blue mist collides with the Benthic entity's abyssal aura, the physics of the room violently snap.
"Visual confirmation," Amethyst says, her breath catching. "Hannah... she's freezing."
"Not freezing," I correct, watching the blue alchemical light wash over the imposter. "Transmuting."
The entity wearing my face stops mid-stride. The watery distortion around it hardens, taking on a glossy, artificial sheen. The imposter’s skin turns to pale, unyielding porcelain. The joints at its elbows and knees lock with loud, echoing CRACK-CLICK sounds that reverberate through the open comms. In seconds, the terrifying deep-sea sovereign is reduced to a rigid, life-sized mannequin, frozen in a pose of lunging aggression.
"Aesthetic mercy," Maximillian mutters.
He taps the side of the glass cylinder. The blue gas spirals violently like a localized hurricane, wrapping around the paralyzed mannequin. With a sickeningly satisfying pop, the immense, crushing atmospheric pressure in the room is rapidly vacuumed directly into the cylinder, dragging the entity with it.
The mannequin shrinks, folding inward on itself with the clatter of snapping plastic, until it is violently sucked into the glass tube.
Maximillian elegantly slams the brass cap back onto the cylinder, sealing it tight.
Inside the cafe, gravity abruptly returns to normal. Floating chairs crash to the floor. The barista stirs behind the counter, groaning. The unnatural frost on the windows instantly melts into a puddle on the sill.
Maximillian turns, examining the cylinder in his hand. Inside, a tiny, perfectly detailed plastic action figure of the Benthic Sovereign floats in highly pressurized, dark water.
"Jenny," Maximillian’s voice hums over the comms, cheerful and bright. "You can stand down, darling. The greatsword won't be necessary today. The debt has been collected, and the creditor has been securely filed away."
He walks out of the cafe, the bell ringing normally this time. He approaches the Jaguar, his harlequin suit completely unruffled, and taps gracefully on my passenger window.
I lower the glass. The air outside smells of ozone and expensive cologne.
"A flawless audit, Hanavari," Maximillian says, offering a mischievous grin as he holds up the glass cylinder like a snow globe. "Your ledger is officially balanced. Now, shall we find somewhere else for coffee? The ambiance in there is thoroughly ruined."
