The hologram flickered to life above the table, casting a blue glow over Hanavari’s stern, beautifully made-up face. She adjusted the cuffs of her pink silk blouse, looking every inch the corporate executive, despite the fact that she was currently planning a heist in a dimly lit safehouse.
"Iggy, darling, pay attention," Hanavari said, gesturing to the floating schematic. "A 'hostile takeover' requires a full 'audit' of the 'target.' And our target is notoriously... un-auditable."
Iggy Starflare kicked her boots up onto the table, right through the holographic projection of a gloomy fortress. She spun her newly acquired ancestral sword—a jagged blade that hummed with unpredictable, crackling energy—on one finger. "You mean we're robbing the creepy shadow guy because Amethyst said Tinbunny is sprouting tentacles?"
"Tinbunny’s... biological merger with her father, Shuggoth, requires stabilization," Hanavari corrected smoothly. "She needs the Umbral Stone. But to get it, we have to dismantle a monopoly."
Hanavari swiped her hand through the air, expanding the hologram. "I've analyzed the brief. The Shadowy Man isn't a person, Iggy. He’s a C-suite position. A paranoid recluse who has bet his entire portfolio on a single-point-of-failure asset."
"Boring," Iggy yawned, sparks of pink chaos magic dripping from her fingertips to sizzle on the table. "Does he have loot? Can I stab him?"
"He has the Umbral Heart," Hanavari said, pointing to a pulsing grey gem in the center of the map. "It powers his 'Penitral'—a pocket dimension office made of pure shadow. It’s his firewall. But it’s also his only power grid. He is catastrophically over-leveraged."
Iggy sat up, the word dimension catching her ear. "So we break in, smash his toys, and grab the shiny grey rock?"
"We perform a 'liquidation,'" Hanavari smiled, a predatory expression that promised violence wrapped in bureaucracy. "But we can't find his office. It's off the map. So, we need to find an employee and force a meeting."
Hanavari tapped the table, bringing up a news reel of a chaotic brawl in a mall. "Miami, early 2024. The Bayside Marketplace incident. Police said it was juveniles. The internet said it was ten-foot tall shadow aliens."
"I remember that!" Iggy grinned. "Total chaos. My favorite flavor."
"It was a 'smokescreen,'" Hanavari explained. "A 'Wraith'—one of his Tier 1 operators—was there to collect data. But that trail is cold. The market is saturated." She swiped the image away, replacing it with a grainy photo of a Berlin U-Bahn station. "This, however, is fresh. Quantum-Helix GMBH lost their encryption keys in a 'fire' 48 hours ago. One witness saw a 'man made of smoke.' And that witness just got a fifty-thousand euro bonus from a shell company."
Iggy grabbed her sword, the blade flaring with violet and neon green light. "Berlin. Subways. Shadows. Finally, the fun part."
The Berlin U-Bahn station was damp, smelling of ozone and old garbage. It was late; the platform was deserted except for a twitchy man in a janitor’s uniform clutching a briefcase.
"That's our 'Shade,'" Hanavari whispered from the darkness of a maintenance alcove. "Tier 2 field agent. He's waiting to file his report."
"He looks nervous," Iggy noted, her eyes glowing faintly. "The air feels... sticky."
Suddenly, the shadows under the platform didn't just darken—they deepened into a void. A tall, nine-foot figure of solidified night poured out of the ground like oil in reverse. Two cold blue eyes fixed on the janitor.
"The Wraith," Hanavari murmured. "Tier 1. Ethereal. Stealthy."
The Wraith reached for the briefcase. "Your account... has been... credited," it hissed, a sound like dead leaves skittering on pavement.
"Audit time!" Hanavari shouted, stepping into the light.
The Wraith spun, hissing. It tried to dissolve into smoke, but Iggy was faster.
"Oh no you don't, smoky!" Iggy yelled. She didn't use a spell; she swung her ancestral sword. The blade didn't just cut air; it cut probability. A rift of chaotic pink energy slashed through the station, scrambling the shadows.
The Wraith screeched as the chaos magic disrupted its stealth frequency. It solidified, stumbling back.
"You're prepared for stealth," Hanavari declared, cracking her knuckles. "You are not prepared for a hostile takeover."
Hanavari lunged, her hands glowing with violet "Financial Sorcery." She didn't strike the Wraith; she slammed her hands onto the concrete platform. "Asset freeze!"
Violet light exploded across the floor, anchoring the Wraith's shadow to the ground like a pinned butterfly. "I've corrupted the local environment!" Hanavari shouted. "Iggy, keep him distracted while I trace the connection!"
"With pleasure!" Iggy vaulted over a turnstile, her body wreathed in wild magic. The Wraith lashed out with tendrils of darkness, but Iggy blinked out of existence and reappeared mid-air, bringing her sword down. The blade connected with the shadow-creature, not cutting flesh but destabilizing its form, causing it to glitch like a bad video file.
While Iggy unleashed a barrage of chaotic strikes—turning the Wraith’s shadow-tendrils into harmless confetti and butterflies—Hanavari placed her hand on the Wraith's forehead. She wasn't reading its mind; she was hacking its terminal.
"Tracing the data stream..." Hanavari muttered, her eyes flashing purple. "I have the IP address... I have the coordinates... Got it!"
Hanavari grabbed the Wraith by its non-existent throat and pushed violet light into the void it had come from. "Phase 4: Asset Liquidation. Hold on, Iggy!"
The world twisted inside out. The smell of the subway vanished, replaced by the dry, suffocating cold of a tomb.
They stumbled onto a floor of polished black obsidian. They were floating in a grey void, surrounded by walls made of solidified whispers. In the center sat a desk made of light-drinking darkness.
Behind it sat The Shadowy Man. He stood up, his silhouette flickering like static. "Who... how did you breach the firewall?"
"I'm the Auditor," Hanavari announced, her heels clicking on the obsidian floor—the sound of impending bankruptcy. "And your Syndicate is insolvent."
The Shadowy Man didn't panic. He waved a hand, and the shadows in the room peeled away from the walls, forming a dozen jagged, spear-like constructs. "Security! Remove them!"
"Iggy! Handle the staff!" Hanavari commanded, eyes locked on the CEO.
"Finally, a target rich environment!" Iggy laughed. As the shadow-spears flew toward them, she didn't dodge. She thrust her ancestral sword into the obsidian floor. A shockwave of pure chaos erupted—gravity reversed for the spears, sending them crashing into the ceiling.
Iggy danced through the storm of shadows, her sword trailing ribbons of reality-warping light. She turned one shadow-construct into a flock of angry pigeons and shattered another into glass shards. She was the perfect distraction—a storm of noise and color in a world of silence and grey.
While Iggy kept the minions busy, Hanavari marched through the chaos. The Shadowy Man tried to fade, to shadow-walk away, but the violet grid of Hanavari’s magic had already locked down the room's coordinates.
"I've put a lien on your existence," she purred.
She lunged. The Shadowy Man tried to turn to mist, but Hanavari’s magic was conceptual. She didn't grab his body; she grabbed his authority. She slammed him onto his own desk, pinning him with a wrestler’s perfect form.
"The Umbral Heart," she snarled into his static face. "Hand it over."
Weak and cut off from his network, he pointed to his chest. Hanavari reached into the smoke. It felt like liquid nitrogen. She closed her hand around the hard, faceted gem and pulled.
With a sound like a cracking glacier, the Umbral Stone came free.
The Shadowy Man screamed—a sound of digital corruption—and dissolved into harmless grey fog. The dimension began to collapse.
"Liquidation complete!" Hanavari shouted, holding the pulsing grey gem high. "Iggy! Exit strategy!"
Iggy slashed a hole in reality with her sword, creating a swirling portal back to the U-Bahn. "Way ahead of you, boss!"
They tumbled onto the subway platform just as the portal imploded behind them. Hanavari stood up, smoothing her leotard and checking the grey gem.
"Well," Hanavari said, tossing the stone to Iggy. "That went exactly according to the business plan."
Iggy caught the stone, grinning as its orderly grey light clashed with her chaotic aura. "You did the boring paperwork, I smashed the office. Best team ever."
"Indeed," Hanavari smirked. "Now, let's get this to Amethyst. Tinbunny's tentacles aren't going to stabilize themselves."
ggy caught the stone, grinning as its orderly grey light clashed with her chaotic aura. "You did the boring paperwork, I smashed the office. Best team ever."
She flipped the gem high into the air, watching it spin. "So... the night is young, right? Do we really have to file the paperwork right now? Maybe we take the scenic route? See what else this baby can unlock?"
Iggy looked at Hanavari with a mischievous, electric glint in her eyes.
Hanavari snatched the stone out of the air on its way down. She paused, and for a brief moment, a dangerous, matching glint sparkled in her own eyes—the temptation of an infinite, hostile takeover.
"Negative," Hanavari said, though her smile remained sharp. "Amethyst is waiting, and we must close the contract first."
She looked up past the subway entrance, toward the open night sky. "But once the asset is delivered... then, darling, we can play in the stars."
