Transcript from Nightshades lab:
The Interception
Nightshade did not hear the magnetic locks disengage. She didn't hear the anti-magic wards momentarily stutter. She was too deep in her data to notice anything until a voice, sharp and laced with an unusual urgency, cut through the quiet hum of the lab.
MAXIMILLIAN: "Stop. Put the dust down, Nightshade. Now."
Maximillian Holt stood framed in the lab's doorway, his coat slightly rumpled—a clear sign he’d rushed, an action highly out of character. His eyes, usually coolly assessing, were fixed on the vial of butterfly residue on her counter.
NIGHTSHADE: (Without looking up, annoyed)
"Maximillian, your timing is appalling. I'm on the cusp of synthesizing a stable antiviral from this 'bimbo fever' residue. Tinbunny's intel was impeccable; this entire operation by Cavern Industries is a disgrace of corporate extortion, but the payload is a goldmine. In a few hours, I'll have a cure that's exponentially more effective than their planned placebo, and we'll own the market. Don't be an imbecile."
She reached for a pipette, intending to transfer the smallest fraction of the powder into a solvent.
MAXIMILLIAN: (Crossing the room in two long strides, his voice dropping to a dangerous, low tone)
"If you touch that solvent, you will have cured an illness and unleashed a pandemic. I am not being an imbecile, Nightshade. I am being your field agent. I was at the site Tinbunny burned down." He covered the pink dust vial with his hand. "The butterfly was a trap."
NIGHTSHADE: (Finally looking up, a flash of irritation in her eyes)
"The butterfly was a magical power source exploited to create a simple mind-dulling bio-agent. Tinbunny found its source, liberated it by burning down their crude lab, and retrieved the residue that makes the cure. The only trap here is my patience wearing thin."
MAXIMILLIAN:
"You only saw the financial trap. I saw the magical snare. The 'butterfly' was a glamour—a façade. The source of the contagion wasn't the magic, it was the corruption beneath the magic. I recognized the subtle, pervasive aura of a parademon-corrupted Fae on the wind where the lab used to be."
NIGHTSHADE: (Scoffing)
"A parademon-corrupted Fae? Maximillian, you're being melodramatic. They created a simple Fantasy IQ scheme."
MAXIMILLIAN:
"The scheme was the bait! The Fae was their containment field! Cavern Industries didn't exploit the butterfly, they were using it as a biological warhead. Tinbunny’s righteous act of burning the lab—and casting her Curse of Servitude—was precisely what they wanted. It broke the glamour, freed the corrupted entity, and gave it a target."
He pulled his hand off the dust vial, looking at the shimmering pink powder with chilling intensity.
MAXIMILLIAN:
"This dust isn't just the fever's source. It’s a magically charged homing beacon. If you had deployed a mass-market cure derived from this, you would have unknowingly distributed millions of psychic anchors. Every person you 'cured' would become a GPS coordinate, ready to be exploited or dominated by the newly liberated Fae."
Nightshade stared at the dust, then at Maximillian. Her initial anger evaporated, replaced by the calculating seriousness of a true threat assessment.
NIGHTSHADE:
"So, Tinbunny's efficiency, her passion... it led her to activate the master switch."
MAXIMILLIAN:
"Precisely. She completed their design. This is no longer about stopping a greedy corporation. It's about containing an elemental force. You need to seal that vial in a lead-lined repository now. We don't synthesize a cure from this data—we use its signature to build a completely separate magical counter-spell. The chase begins now."
NIGHTSHADE: (Her voice is tight, devoid of its usual composure as she processes the horrifying truth. She seals the pink dust vial in a reinforced containment unit and locks it in a small, specialized lead box.)
"A homing beacon... a psychic anchor... Tinbunny didn't liberate a butterfly, she delivered a corrupted creature directly to a place of magical saturation. The Curse of Servitude bound it to those who imprisoned it, not those who exploited it. Which means it is now targeting its most natural, most vulnerable prey: its own kind, or those who embody the beauty it despises."
She slams the vault door shut and turns to Maximillian, her face white. A look of dawning, paralyzing realization crosses her features.
NIGHTSHADE:
"The butterfly... the creature... it feeds on pure, uncorrupted glamour. The only true Fae-magic it can latch onto now is in a place of deep, serene natural peace—a place that's currently hosting someone with a powerful, unwitting reservoir of natural magic. Someone close to me. Someone my henchwoman has probably been in contact with since the lab incident."
She places her hands flat on the desk, bracing herself, the name escaping her lips like a choked curse.
NIGHTSHADE:
"It’s at the Amethyst's forest, a nature sanctuary."
MAXIMILLIAN: (Sparing a moment of cold, immediate assessment)
It's an intersection of ley lines, designed to amplify natural, benevolent magic. It's the worst possible place for this entity to settle. What is Amethyst's role there, and more importantly, what will a parademon-corrupted Fae do in a peaceful nature place?"
NIGHTSHADE: (Running a hand through her hair, her expertise in magical pathology returning with a vengeance)
"The 'bimbo fever' was a primitive test. What this creature will do is far worse than dulling wits. It will use the Sanctuary’s energy to reverse and pervert its natural state. Amethyst is an empath, someone who channels the raw emotion and peace of the land. The corrupted Fae will:
Consume the Peace: It will feed on the Sanctuary's inherent tranquility, replacing the natural ley-line current with its own, necrotic influence. The grass won't just die; the animals will turn aggressively, driven mad by fear and hunger. The trees will weep sap that burns like acid.
Pervert Amethyst's Empathy: It will not kill her immediately. It will twist her power to its own ends. Instead of channeling peace, Amethyst will become a siren for madness and despair, broadcasting waves of psychic corruption across the entire region. She'll effectively be weaponized into an emotional bioweapon, turning her greatest strength into the creature's most efficient transmitter.
Manufacture Servitude: The original Curse of Servitude will bind any natural magical being it encounters, including Amethyst, into its new hive-mind. It won't merely control them; it will transform them into lesser, subservient, glamour-feeding entities—replicating the very thing Tinbunny tried to destroy."
She turns to Maximillian, her eyes blazing with focused dread.
NIGHTSHADE:
"Tinbunny's righteous fire has led to a magical bomb being delivered to my friend's doorstep, and Amethyst is about to become the detonator. You have the skills for rapid mystical containment. We leave the samples. We move now."
