Nightshade is @Nightshade-QOV
"Of all the death traps in all the world," Nightshade grunted, straining against the cold iron clasped around her wrists, "you had to pick the one with the giant, ridiculously slow-moving press."
Her voice was a low growl of frustration, her dark hair plastered to her forehead with sweat.
Hanavari winced, the faint violet glow at the roots of her own hair sputtering weakly. "It was supposed to be a simple extraction, Nightshade. The schematics didn't mention a Class-Four null-magic field woven into the restraints."
"Well, the field is here, and that thing is getting lower," Nightshade shot back, her gaze fixed on the immense block of metal descending towards them.
"Any idea when it's scheduled to turn us into purple and black pâté?"
Hanavari’s blue eyes narrowed, her analytical mind overriding the panic. She watched the deliberate turn of the massive gears below, listened to the rhythmic clank of the mechanism. "Judging by the gear rotation and the current descent rate... we have less than five minutes."
"Five minutes. Fantastic," Nightshade said, her tone dripping with sarcasm. "So, let's get to the important part: how in the nine hells are we getting out of this, Hanavari? Because my power feels like it's trickling through a pinhole, and I'm guessing yours isn't much better."
"It's not," Hanavari admitted, her voice tight. "The chains are dampening our individual output, but they can't nullify it completely. If we synchronize and push at the exact same moment, we might be able to create a harmonic frequency strong enough to overload the source of the field. It's a long shot..."
"A long shot is all we have," Nightshade interrupted, her expression hardening with resolve. "On your mark, then. Let's give them a show."
Hanavari took a steadying breath, her professional focus snapping into place like a lens. "Close your eyes," she commanded, her voice sharp and clear over the rhythmic grinding of the machinery. "Don't fight the field. Feel its frequency. It's a low, guttural hum. Find it."
Nightshade’s eyelids fluttered shut. She forced the adrenaline down, searching past the heavy, wet-blanket sensation smothering her power. Hanavari was right. Underneath the suppression, there was a vibration, a steady, oppressive thrum that resonated deep in her bones. "I have it," she gritted out.
"Good. Now, don't push against it. Match it," Hanavari instructed, her own eyes closed in concentration. "Let your energy resonate with that same hum. I'll build my frequency up to meet yours. When they lock, we push. Together."
A faint, inky blackness, like a drop of oil spreading in water, began to coalesce around Nightshade's manacles. Across from her, Hanavari's chains started to pulse with a soft, struggling violet light. The air grew heavy, thick with the scent of ozone and charged particles as the two nascent energies fought against their containment. The steady clank... clank... of the descending press was a monstrous metronome, counting down their final seconds.
"I feel you," Hanavari breathed, her teeth clenched with effort. "The frequencies are aligning... almost... Now!"
Both women screamed, not in fear, but in a singular, desperate exertion of will. The violet and black energies erupted from their restraints, not as a blast, but as a focused wave of pure sound and light. The harmonic they created was a piercing, glass-shattering shriek that vibrated through the very metal of their prison.
A shower of blue sparks erupted from a conduit box on a nearby wall. The oppressive weight on their magic vanished in an instant, the low hum of the field dying with a final, pathetic whine.
"The field is down!" Nightshade yelled, a triumphant grin flashing across her face as she felt her full power surge back. Her grin faltered as the grinding of the gears above them grew louder, faster. The descent of the press had doubled in speed. "But the press isn't stopping!"
"It was a dead man's switch," Hanavari gasped, the intoxicating rush of her own unleashed magic flooding her senses. "Disabling the field triggered an override. It's accelerating! We have less than a minute!"
"No time to talk!" Hanavari yelled over the screeching metal. With her power now roaring back to life, she focused it not as a wave, but as a sharp, invisible blade. She slashed at the thick steel bolt holding her manacle to the platform. It sheared through with a white-hot flash.
"Show off!" Nightshade retorted, opting for a more direct approach. A sphere of pure darkness solidified in her hand, and she slammed it against her own chains. The enchanted metal didn't break; it dissolved into black dust.
They scrambled to their feet just as the massive press slammed down with a deafening, final CRUNCH that shook the entire structure, crushing the platform where they had been mere seconds before. Not waiting to admire their narrow escape, they sprinted for the only exit, a grime-caked service ladder, leaving the ruined trap behind them.
