Hannah's tribute to Hanky Panky

Hannah stood in the wings, clutching the fourteen-pound black bowling ball to her chest like a shield. She was terrified.

She was dressed for a hostile corporate audit, not a burlesque routine. Her armor consisted of a severely tailored, charcoal-grey wool blazer; a crisp, heavily starched white button-down blouse, buttoned to the collar; a matching charcoal-grey pencil skirt that hit precisely at the knee; a sensible, smooth grey silk slip beneath the skirt to prevent static; a practical, unadorned black bra, and matching full-coverage black knickers. Wire-rimmed glasses sat on her nose, and her straight blonde hair was pulled into a painfully tight bun.

Why did I agree to this? she thought, her stomach doing panicked flips. The answer, of course, was sitting in the front row: Milly, who had beaten her fair and square in their endurance bet. A deal was a deal. But standing here, about to systematically expose herself to a crowded theatre, Hannah felt entirely out of her depth.

A sultry, slow-walking bassline began to thump through the floorboards, joined by a lazy, teasing saxophone. It was a rhythm built for seduction, and Hannah felt wildly out of sync with it. Swallowing her dread, she stepped into the harsh white spotlight and set the heavy ball on the pedestal with a resounding THUD.

Hannah produced a red silk handkerchief. She draped it over the bowling ball, her hands shaking slightly. She locked eyes with Milly, who gave her an encouraging, if highly amused, grin.

Closing her eyes, Hannah tapped into her forensic magic and shifted the ball's dimensional coordinates. She pulled the silk away. The pedestal was empty.

A ripple of confused laughter went through the crowd. Hannah turned around. The right shoulder of her tailored charcoal blazer was bulging monstrously, the expensive wool screaming in protest against the fourteen-pound sphere hidden inside the lining.

Hannah let out a perfectly timed, exasperated sigh. Catching the beat of the saxophone, she rolled her left shoulder, slipped the blazer off, reached into the empty right sleeve, and hauled the heavy ball back into reality, dropping it onto the pedestal.

THUD.

One layer down. The air in the theatre felt suddenly very cold against her arms.

She covered the ball again. A microsecond of concentration, a spark of magic, and the ball was gone.

This time, the audience gasped. The bowling ball was now lodged beneath her crisp white blouse, sitting right against her stomach like a sudden, comical pregnancy. The starch held for a moment, but the buttons were straining violently. She had to lean back, waddling slightly under the absurd, invisible weight. Chuckles erupted from the back rows.

A snare drum joined the bass, providing a sharper, punchier beat. Hannah caught the rhythm. Snap. Snap. Snap. She popped the straining buttons of her blouse one by one in perfect time with the snare.

As she let the blouse slide down her arms and drop to the floor, a strange sensation bloomed in her chest. Deep down, beneath the panic, she felt a flicker of heat. It was Hanavari. The alter ego wasn't fully awake yet, but she was watching, amused and hungry. A phantom warmth wrapped around Hannah's bare shoulders, a faint, pulsing electric-violet energy that took the chill out of the air. The laughter in the room began to quiet, replaced by a murmur of intrigue.

Down to her grey skirt, slip, and black bra, Hannah covered the ball once more. She pulled the silk. Gone.

Her knees immediately locked. The ball was now in her pencil skirt, creating a massive, heavy bulge on her left hip. She had to awkwardly drag her leg across the stage. A few people howled with laughter, but Hannah was starting to smile. The forensic logic of the magic was flawless, and the physical exertion was feeding the fire inside her.

The drummer switched to a heavier, driving tom-tom beat. Matching the tempo, Hannah smoothly unzipped the skirt, letting it pool at her ankles, and pulled the ball out from the empty air near her hip.

THUD.

Someone in the second row started clapping to the rhythm. A few more joined in.

She was now standing in just her sensible grey silk slip, her black bra, and her knickers. She was more exposed than she had ever been in public, yet the terror was melting away. The internal warmth from Hanavari was spreading, a comforting, heavy blanket of violet magic that hummed just beneath her skin.

She vanished the ball. This time, the massive sphere appeared trapped in the delicate grey silk of her slip, pulling the fabric taut against her thighs.

Hannah didn't awkwardly waddle this time. Emboldened by the rising magic and the steadily clapping audience, she caught the deep thump of the double bass. She slid the slip down her legs with a slow, deliberate grace, swaying her hips in a way that belonged entirely to Hanavari. She retrieved the ball, her movements becoming less like an accountant and more like a predator. Someone in the back let out an appreciative wolf whistle.

THUD.

Hannah stood center stage in just her plain black bra and knickers. The white spotlight was beginning to flicker, struggling against the ambient magical interference she was generating. The music swelled, the saxophone wailing a heavy, sultry note.

She vanished the ball. Instantly, the fourteen-pound weight transposed into the space between her breasts, straining the center gore of the sensible black bra to its absolute limit.

She didn't look at Milly this time. She locked eyes with a stranger in the third row, a man whose jaw had gone slightly slack. She reached behind her back, dragged the hook loose, and let the bra fall away.

She braced for a wave of shame. It never came. The crowd went dead silent for a fraction of a second, completely captivated, before erupting into cheers.

A surge of pure, intoxicating heat rushed through her veins, feeding off their noise. The faint, electric violet streaks at the roots of her blonde hair began to glow visibly. Hanavari’s presence was a furnace now, projecting a localized aura of warmth that made the cool theatre air feel like a summer night. The magic whispered to her: You are not exposed. You are the one in control.

THUD.

She was practically vibrating with power. The music peaked into a driving, primal crescendo. She covered the ball, vanished it, and felt the immense, heavy mass shift into her plain black knickers.

She hooked her thumbs into the waistband. The audience was roaring now, completely under her spell, clapping furiously to the beat. Hannah pulled the knickers down, stepping out of them with a confident, triumphant kick.

She was completely naked on stage. But she didn't feel bare. The electric-violet glow was radiating from her skin, a visible, pulsing armor of pure magical energy. Hanavari’s warmth enveloped her entirely, transforming what should have been a moment of ultimate vulnerability into a display of absolute dominance. She stood tall, her posture perfect, her skin flushed not with embarrassment, but with raw power.

From the discarded pile of her knickers, she hauled the heavy bowling ball back onto the pedestal.

The audience was roaring, but Hannah held up a single, glowing finger. The room went dead silent. The drummer slowed to a quiet, suspenseful tap.

Hannah picked up the red silk handkerchief one last time. She draped it over the ball. The audience leaned forward collectively, holding their breath. She has no clothes left, the silence seemed to say. Where can it possibly go?

Hannah locked eyes with the crowd, her lips curling into a wicked, feral smile. She vanished the ball.

The pedestal was empty.

She didn't miss a beat. Moving with the heavy, pulsing rhythm of the bass, Hannah stepped to the center of the stage and dropped into a slow, brazen, theatrical squat. She gave a dramatic little shimmy of her hips, and in a brilliant flash of violet light, the massive black sphere materialized directly beneath her, dropping to the floor like a freshly laid, fourteen-pound egg.

THUD.

For a split second, the audience couldn't process the sheer impossibility of the illusion. Then, the theatre absolutely exploded. The crowd went feral, screaming, whistling, and stamping their feet so hard the floorboards shook.

Hannah didn't bow. Basking in the deafening roar, she scooped up the red silk cloth from the empty pedestal. She tossed it high into the air above her head. As the red fabric drifted down, raining over her bare shoulders, the white spotlight shattered.

The stage plunged into darkness, immediately replaced by a deep, thrumming violet light erupting from Hannah herself. Right before the screaming audience's eyes, the forensic accountant was transformed. The straight blonde hair lengthened, twisting into a chaotic, vivid purple ponytail. The glowing blue detailing and sleek black fabric of the Magician's costume wove itself out of the magical light, snapping into place over her skin, followed by the fishnets and the choker.

The Great Hanavari stood where Hannah had been, her blue eyes blazing with predatory light. She was fully awake, fully charged, and perfectly at home in the spotlight.
