Elizabeth takes a few steps forward, rolling her shoulders and testing the way her new body moves.
She lifts one leg in a slow, controlled motion, rising onto the toes of her ballet slippers before
lowering herself back down with a smooth grace that feels almost… unnatural.
She lets out a small breath, turning to Daniel and Veronica. “Okay. So… this is weird.” She extends her arms, flexing her fingers before placing her hands on her waist. “For one thing, I feel lighter. Not just in weight, but in how I move. Like… I don’t have to think about balancing, it just happens.”
She does a slow pirouette, surprised by how effortless it feels. “I’m not even trying, and I’m landing perfectly. My real body—my actual body—would struggle with that. I’d have to think about it, control my core, watch my footing. This one? It’s like it’s designed for it.”
Elizabeth lifts her leg again, this time bringing it up far higher than she normally could. “My flexibility is insane. I don’t feel any tension or strain. If I tried this before, I’d be stretching for days afterward.”
She taps her fingers against her ribcage, tilting her head. “Also… my breathing is different. My lungs feel… bigger? Like I can take in more air with less effort.” She frowns slightly. “And my heart’s beating slower, but I don’t feel weak. It’s like my body is just… efficient now.”
She glances down at her legs, running a hand along the silk fabric of her leggings. “And my muscles—I know they’re there, I can feel them, but they don’t ache. It’s like… this body is a dancer’s ideal. No resistance, no fatigue, no limitations.”
Elizabeth looks back at the others, a mixture of excitement and unease flickering across her face. “This is so different. I’m not sure if I love it or if I should be really freaked out.”
Elizabeth lifts her hands, stretching out her fingers, when she notices something strange. Her movements are smooth—almost too smooth. There’s no resistance, no stiffness, just… fluid, effortless motion. Curious, she presses a fingertip to her wrist, expecting to feel the familiar thrum of her pulse.
Nothing.
Her breath catches as she presses harder. No pulse. No warmth.
Her skin feels soft, but there’s an odd texture beneath it, something too perfect, too uniform. Slowly, she flexes her arm and watches, expecting the usual subtle shifts of muscle beneath her skin. Instead, the surface remains eerily smooth. No veins. No tiny imperfections.
She swallows, feeling a strange mix of fascination and apprehension.
“Uh… guys?” She moves her hand to her elbow, giving it a slight press. There’s no give. No muscle or bone shifting beneath the surface. It’s solid.
She bends her wrist, and for the first time, she hears it—a faint click.
Elizabeth’s eyes widen. She slowly rolls her shoulder, and there it is again—the softest, barely perceptible sound of something mechanical.
Her breath quickens. She lifts her arm, watching as the joint moves with an unnatural smoothness, but now, she knows. It isn’t just a new body—it’s a construct, a doll.
She presses her hands to her sides, suddenly hyper-aware of herself. “Okay. I think I might actually be really freaked out now.”
Veronica raises an eyebrow. “Why?”
Elizabeth hesitates, then carefully moves her arm in a slow, deliberate motion. She listens. There it is. That barely-there mechanical shift beneath the surface. “Because I think I actually am a doll.”
She touches her stomach, expecting to feel the usual firmness of her core, but instead, there’s a perfect smoothness. She presses a little harder and—click.
Something inside shifts.
Elizabeth gasps. She glances at Daniel and Veronica, eyes wide. “I think I have compartments.”
Elizabeth hesitates, heart pounding—if she had a heart anymore. Slowly, she presses against the faint seam she can now feel along her stomach. There’s a soft click, followed by a subtle whirring sound, and suddenly—
A panel in her abdomen slides open.
She gasps, instinctively taking a step back, but the compartment stays open, revealing a small hollow space within. It’s not empty. Nestled inside are a few delicate objects—each one oddly familiar.
She carefully reaches in and pulls out a silk ribbon, the same deep burgundy as the dress she was wearing the day they first came to the lockup. It feels real in her hands, the fabric cool and smooth. She stares at it, confused, then sets it aside and pulls out the next item.
A folded-up note.
With slightly trembling fingers, she unfolds the paper. The handwriting is unfamiliar, but the message is clear:
"Every performer leaves a piece of themselves behind. Take care of what you carry."
Elizabeth swallows hard, setting the note down before reaching in again. This time, her fingers brush against something metallic. She pulls it out—a small wind-up key, the kind that would fit into the back of an old-fashioned doll.
She stares at it.
Veronica leans in. “Uh, okay, that’s creepy. You don’t actually have—”
Before she can finish, Elizabeth instinctively moves her hand behind her back. She already knows what she’s going to find.
Her fingers brush against something cold, something metallic, just beneath her shoulder blades.
A keyhole.
She freezes. The realization settles in like a weight in her chest—except there isn’t a chest, not really.
No heartbeat, no organs, just a perfect, mechanical form shaped like her.
She looks up at Daniel and Veronica, her voice barely above a whisper.
“I think I need to be wound up.”
Daniel and Veronica exchange glances before Daniel hesitantly picks up the small wind-up key. He steps behind Elizabeth, eyes scanning for the keyhole she had discovered. Sure enough, just beneath her shoulder blades, a small metallic opening gleams in the dim light.
"Are you sure about this?" Daniel asks.
Elizabeth hesitates for only a moment before nodding. "I need to know what happens."
Daniel exhales and carefully inserts the key. The moment the metal slides into place, Elizabeth shivers. There's a faint click, followed by a soft humming sound, like a mechanism coming to life.
Daniel starts turning the key.
With each rotation, Elizabeth feels something deep within her activate. At first, it’s subtle—just a growing warmth, a strange sense of rightness. But then, her body straightens, her posture snapping into perfect poise, as if unseen strings were pulling her upright. Her fingers twitch, then curl with delicate precision.
She inhales sharply—not out of need, but because the motion feels programmed. She feels light, almost weightless, as if her every movement is guided by some unseen rhythm.
Her head tilts slightly to the side, her lips curling into a soft, automatic smile. “Oh,” she murmurs, voice airy and precise. “That feels… wonderful.”
Veronica watches with a mix of awe and unease. "Liz, are you still in there?"
Elizabeth turns toward her with a graceful pivot, her movements suddenly fluid yet deliberate, like a ballerina on a music box. She lifts a hand and twirls one of her auburn curls around her finger before laughing—a light, melodic sound, but something about it feels too perfect, too practiced.
“I think so,” she says, but even as she speaks, she steps forward in a smooth, dancer-like motion, her limbs flowing as if rehearsed. Her body responds effortlessly, as if she’s meant to move this way.
Daniel lowers his hand, the key slipping free. The moment it’s removed, Elizabeth slows just slightly, her movements becoming less rigidly controlled. She sways for a moment, then exhales, blinking rapidly as if shaking off a trance.
“That was…” She looks down at her hands, flexing her fingers. “That was incredible. It’s like—like I was made for the stage.”
Veronica crosses her arms. “Well, yeah. You literally are right now.”
Elizabeth laughs again, but this time it’s more natural. “I need to try this out,” she says, turning to Daniel. “There has to be a trick that goes with this, right?”
Daniel, flipping through the book, nods slowly. “Oh, there is.” He looks up, meeting her gaze. “It’s called The Clockwork Dancer.”
Daniel flips through the book, his finger tracing the instructions for The Clockwork Dancer. "Alright," he says, "this routine was designed for a magician’s assistant transformed into a living doll—well, that part’s already sorted." He looks up at Elizabeth, who is still moving with that effortless, fluid grace, her doll-like body responding in ways her real one never did.
Veronica raises an eyebrow. "And what exactly do we need to do?"
Daniel skims the text again. "It says we place Elizabeth on a stage, wind her up, and she will perform a pre-set routine. But there's also a secondary phase… one where the magician can take control, like a marionette."
Elizabeth's eyes brighten. "Oh! That sounds amazing. Let’s do it!"
They clear some space in the lockup, setting up an impromptu stage with whatever props they can find. A full-length mirror leans against a crate, reflecting Elizabeth’s changed form—her perfectly poised posture, the elaborate ballet-like outfit, the way every motion seems designed for spectacle.
Daniel places her in the center and, once again, slides the key into the slot on her back. "Ready?"
Elizabeth nods, excitement flickering in her glassy eyes.
He starts turning the key.
As the mechanism winds up, Elizabeth’s breath hitches—then stops entirely. Her movements become more mechanical, her limbs aligning with invisible beats. Then, without warning, she moves.
She takes a step forward, then another, her arms lifting in a practiced ballet pose.
She twirls, perfectly balanced, then extends her leg in a graceful arabesque. Each motion is impossibly precise, her limbs obeying a rhythm only she can hear.
Veronica watches, arms crossed. "Well, that's impressive. But what about this ‘marionette’ thing?"
Daniel glances down at the book, then at the set of controls beside the stage—a small wooden apparatus with thin silver strings. He picks it up cautiously.
The moment his fingers brush the handles, the strings extend toward Elizabeth, attaching themselves to her wrists, ankles, and head as if magnetized.
Elizabeth pauses mid-motion, her head tilting as if awaiting instruction.
"Alright," Daniel murmurs, experimentally tilting the control to the left.
Elizabeth follows immediately, pivoting smoothly. He lifts one handle—she raises an arm. He rotates the controls slightly—she spins in place, her foot gliding over the floor with inhuman precision.
“Oh, this is weird," Veronica mutters, watching Elizabeth respond to Daniel’s every command.
Elizabeth, however, is delighted. "I feel so light!" she exclaims, though her voice now carries a faintly artificial tone. "Like I could move forever!"
Daniel tests more movements, making her bow, leap, and even mime playing an invisible violin. But as the performance reaches its peak, something unexpected happens—Elizabeth keeps going, even when Daniel stops guiding her.
"Uh… Liz?" Daniel frowns, lowering the controls. "You okay?"
Elizabeth continues to dance, her movements now independent, but even more doll-like. Her head tilts at an unnatural angle, and for a brief moment, a soft ticking sound can be heard beneath her skin.
Veronica steps forward. "Okay, that’s enough fun for one day—let’s wind her down."
Daniel rushes to her back, but before he can reach the key, Elizabeth twirls away, her limbs now moving faster. Her dance shifts into a dazzling display of rapid pirouettes and leaps, as if she’s running out of time—but determined to use every last second.
"Daniel!" Veronica calls. "Stop her before she breaks herself!"
He lunges forward, catching Elizabeth just as she prepares to launch into another twirl. His hand fumbles for the key, grasping it just as the last of her energy winds down.
With a soft click, Elizabeth freezes, caught mid-step. A breathless silence fills the lockup.
Veronica exhales. "That was… a bit much."
Daniel carefully removes the key, and after a moment, Elizabeth relaxes, blinking as if waking from a dream. She looks at them both, then down at her body, and grins.
"That," she says, "was incredible."
As they examine Elizabeth’s doll-like body, they notice a second compartment near the small keyhole where she was wound up. Daniel gently presses on it, and with a soft click, a hidden panel opens on her back. Inside, there is a series of small, ornate dials and levers, each labeled with different dance styles—"Ballet," "Tango," "Charleston," "Can-Can," "Waltz," and even something called "The Enchanted Marionette."
Elizabeth, feeling a strange mix of curiosity and apprehension, looks at the selections. “Well, that explains the graceful movements,” she murmurs.
Veronica smirks. “So, do we pick one and see what happens? Maybe ‘Can-Can’ will have you kicking all over the place.”
Daniel studies the panel carefully. “This is… incredibly detailed. It’s almost like a self-playing music box, but instead of music, it’s controlling your movements.”
Elizabeth hesitates, then nods. “Okay, but nothing too wild to start with.”
Veronica turns one of the small dials to "Waltz" and flips a tiny switch. Almost instantly, Elizabeth straightens up, her arms lifting into the perfect ballroom posture. A faint musical hum seems to emanate from within her, and without hesitation, she glides forward, her feet moving in a flawless waltz pattern.
Her face flushes. “I’m not even thinking about it—I’m just… dancing!”
Veronica claps her hands in delight. “This is amazing! What happens if we pick something faster?”
Elizabeth’s eyes widen. “Maybe let me finish this one first before we—”
But Veronica is already reaching for the switch.
As Elizabeth tries to sidestep, her movements are still locked into the elegant rhythm of the waltz, making her just a second too slow. The compartment in her back suddenly clicks and slides outward, revealing itself to be a sleek, mechanical remote control. Before Elizabeth can protest, Veronica catches it with a grin.
“Well, this is convenient,” she says, turning the device over in her hands. “It’s like a full control panel for you.”
Elizabeth groans. “Veronica, please don’t—”
Too late. Veronica’s fingers are already spinning the dial, scrolling past recognizable labels until she lands on a strange, unknown symbol—an intricate spiral surrounded by smaller, interconnected glyphs. There’s no name, no clue as to what it represents.
“Uh… maybe we should stick to the labelled ones?” Daniel suggests, stepping forward.
But Veronica, filled with curiosity, shrugs. “Where’s the fun in that?”
She presses the switch.
Elizabeth’s entire body jerks upright, a shiver running down her artificial limbs as the gears inside her whir to life. A hauntingly beautiful melody, unlike any they’ve ever heard, spills from somewhere within her chest. Her head tilts slightly as if receiving instructions, and then—
She moves.
Not in any traditional dance they recognize. Her limbs flow with an unnatural grace, twisting and folding in mesmerizing patterns, her torso bending in ways that should be impossible. The movements are hypnotic—somewhere between a dance and a ritual, her arms weaving symbols into the air while her feet barely seem to touch the ground.
Her eyes widen, but she doesn’t seem able to stop. “I… this feels… different…” she says, her voice tinged with something between awe and uncertainty.
Daniel watches, frowning. “That’s not just a dance,” he murmurs. “It’s a performance with… purpose.”
Veronica, realizing this is something bigger than she expected, tightens her grip on the control panel. “Uh… maybe I should turn it off?”
But as she reaches for the dial, Elizabeth suddenly stops mid-motion—her body rigid, arms outstretched. The air around her hums with energy.
And then—something changes in the lockup.
As the ripple of energy spreads through the lockup, the walls seem to stretch ever so slightly, as if the space itself has inhaled. It’s subtle, but unmistakable. The lockup has grown again.
Daniel’s eyes dart around, taking in the extra shelves, the slightly taller ceiling, and the way the shadows have shifted.
“That’s… new.”
