Milly, her mind still reeling from the experience, simply stood there, a wide, dazed smile on her face. This was truly magic.

Stephanie, ever efficient, stepped forward carrying her sleek, silver tablet. She moved with precise, almost clinical movements, first to Milly's left half, then to her right half.

A small, almost invisible laser beam shot from the tablet, scanning Milly's form.

Stephanie's brow furrowed in concentration as numbers and diagrams flashed across her screen.

"Left side: 34.00 inches in length," she murmured, then moved to the right half. "Right side: 34.00 inches in length." She nodded, a faint, almost imperceptible smile of professional satisfaction.

"A perfect 0.00 inch deviation at the nano-millimetre level, Felix. Truly astounding precision."

With her measurements complete, Stephanie stood and gave Felix an approving nod.

“All data recorded. I’d say we’re ready for the next phase, Felix.”

Felix’s grin widened as he glanced at the audience, his hands poised over the control panel once again.

“Then let’s take this experiment… to the next level.”

The audience held their breath, eagerly awaiting what marvels Felix had in store next. Felix’s hands hovered over the control panel, ready to initiate the next phase of his experiment.

“And now, ladies and gentlemen… prepare to witness—”

Before he could finish, a sudden, jarring alarm echoed across the stage. The harsh, blaring sound startled the audience, and the LED lights flickered wildly.

“What’s happening?” Milly’s upper half asked, her voice tinged with concern.

Felix’s eyes darted to the control panel, his brow furrowing as flashing red warnings scrolled across the screen.

“Power surge detected… system overload…” Felix murmured, his fingers rapidly tapping across the holographic interface. His usually composed demeanour faltered as he tried to regain control, a bead of sweat tracing his temple.

“The containment field… it’s destabilizing!”

Before Felix could react, the robot standing nearby emitted a low, ominous hum. Its eyes flashed erratically, and the glowing containment field that held the thin slice of Milly flickered violently.

A spark shot from the robot’s core, and then—

“Everyone, get back!” Felix shouted, but it was too late.

Two successive bursts of shimmering energy erupted from the malfunctioning quantum laser, arcing across the stage in opposite directions. The beams struck with pinpoint accuracy—one colliding with Milly’s lower half, and the other striking Stephanie where she stood.

The stage was engulfed in swirling smoke and blinding light as a low, vibrating hum filled the air. The audience gasped, some shielding their eyes, others frozen in awe, a collective whisper of "What was that?!" rippling through the rows.

For a moment, nothing could be seen—only the eerie glow of the laser fading into the mist.

As the haze gradually dissipated, Felix blinked through the clearing smoke, his heart pounding.

“Oh… no.”

His voice was barely above a whisper as his eyes widened at the impossible sight before him.

Lying on the metal table where Milly had been divided… was something entirely unexpected.

Milly’s upper body, still clad in her sleek black bodysuit, blinked in confusion as she looked down—only to see a pair of legs that didn’t belong to her.

Stephanie’s legs, wrapped in the striking deep red bodysuit, were now attached to Milly’s waist. The shimmering fabric hugged the unfamiliar curves of her lower half, and the height difference was immediately apparent. Milly’s torso was now resting on Stephanie’s taller, longer legs.

“Uh…” Milly’s brow furrowed as she wiggled her new toes, the bright red fabric glinting under the stage lights.

“What the…?”

But that wasn’t all.

On the other side of the stage, Stephanie stumbled slightly, her eyes wide as she looked down at herself.

Her upper half, still dressed in her red bodysuit, had been attached to Milly’s legs. The contrasting black of Milly’s bodysuit now adorned Stephanie’s lower half, and it was immediately apparent that something else was wrong.

“Why do I feel… smaller?” Stephanie’s voice was laced with confusion as she turned her new legs side to side. The reason was obvious.

Milly’s frame was more petite than Stephanie’s, and the size difference had caused Stephanie to shrink slightly to accommodate her new lower half. She looked… just a little shorter, her proportions subtly altered.

Her hands brushed over the unfamiliar black fabric of Milly’s bodysuit, her expression shifting from confusion to shock.

“Felix… what did you do?” Stephanie’s voice was quiet, yet the tension in her tone was palpable.

The audience sat in stunned silence, some leaning forward, others covering their mouths in disbelief. What they had just witnessed was no ordinary trick—it was an unexpected, reality-defying accident that left them utterly bewildered.

“Oh… dear,” Felix murmured, rubbing his temples as he processed the situation.

Milly’s upper body, now paired with Stephanie’s taller legs, gave a playful smirk as she lifted one of her longer limbs.

“Well… I always wondered what it would feel like to have legs this long.” She wiggled her toes, causing a ripple of laughter from the audience despite the confusion.

Stephanie, however, crossed her arms and gave Felix a pointed look.

“Felix… fix this.”

Felix let out a deep sigh, adjusting his glasses as he examined the damage.

“Right.” He cleared his throat, regaining his composure. “It seems… we’ve encountered a slight recalibration error. But don’t worry, ladies and gentlemen… I’ll have them back to normal in no time.”

But as he glanced at the mismatched bodies of Milly and Stephanie, a small, uneasy smile tugged at the corner of his mouth.

“Hopefully.” Felix wasted no time.

“Alright, we’re going to fix this, ladies. Just… bear with me.” His voice was calm, but there was a flicker of tension in his eyes as he glanced between Milly and Stephanie.

A second sleek metal table, identical to the first, was wheeled onto the stage by the robot. The polished surface gleamed under the futuristic glow of the LED lights. Felix gestured toward it, his movements precise but hurried.

“Stephanie, if you could… lie down here. On your front, please.”

Stephanie hesitated for a moment, still adjusting to the awkward sensation of Milly’s smaller legs beneath her. With a resigned sigh, she climbed onto the table and lay face down, her deep red bodysuit catching the lights as she shifted into position.

“Like this?” she asked, her voice muffled slightly as she rested her chin on her folded arms.

“Perfect.” Felix gave her a reassuring nod.

Milly, still perched on her original table, mirrored Stephanie’s position, lying on her front. The juxtaposition of her upper body clad in the black bodysuit and Stephanie’s long, red-clad legs created an almost surreal image.

“Now, we need to line you both up… just right.”

Felix moved between the tables, his keen eyes examining where the mismatched halves of the women met. He carefully adjusted their bodies, nudging their torsos ever so slightly to ensure that the seams of the bodysuits aligned with precision.

“A little to the left, Milly.”

Milly shifted slightly.

“Good. Hold it right there.”

He turned to Stephanie, gently repositioning her hips.

“And… there. Perfect.”

Felix stepped back to admire his work. Both women were now perfectly aligned, their halves positioned to match the points where their bodies had originally been separated. The contrast between the black and red bodysuits created an almost hypnotic visual effect.

Felix took a deep breath and tapped a few controls on the holographic interface. The quantum laser’s hum grew louder, and the glowing energy intensified as he recalibrated it for precision.

“Okay… this is the moment of truth.” Felix’s voice carried an air of confidence, though his heart pounded in his chest. “I’m going to divide both of you again and… reassemble you properly this time.”

The audience was holding its collective breath, the tension so thick it was almost tangible. The LED lights dimmed, and a low whirring sound echoed through the stage as Felix brought the laser into position.

Felix carefully aligned the circular frame of the quantum laser over Stephanie’s midsection, ensuring the thin beam would hit precisely where her body had been divided. He did the same with Milly, setting the metal frame to encircle her midriff exactly where the mismatch had occurred.

The frames locked into place with a satisfying click, and the thin beam of the quantum laser hummed to life, pulsating gently.

“Ready?” Felix asked, his eyes darting between the two women.

Milly gave a thumbs-up, her face down but her confidence unwavering.

“Let’s get this over with, Felix,” Stephanie muttered, her tone more impatient than nervous.

Felix’s fingers danced across the controls, adjusting the power level to precisely the amount required.

“Dividing in 3… 2… 1…”

A thin, dazzling beam of concentrated quantum energy shot out from the laser, slicing cleanly through both women’s midsections. The process was seamless—smooth, almost elegant.

The audience watched in awe as the beam effortlessly parted their forms again. A slight shimmer surrounded the two tables as the laser’s energy suspended the halves in perfect alignment.

“And now… let’s put them back together.”

Felix tapped the final command, and the laser’s intensity shifted as the containment field began pulling the halves toward their rightful places.

Milly’s upper body began to draw back toward her original legs, the black fabric of her bodysuit gradually aligning with the lower half that had once belonged to her.

At the same time, Stephanie’s taller, red-clad torso hovered above Milly’s smaller legs for a brief moment before sliding back toward her original lower half. The transformation was seamless, the halves clicking back together as though nothing had ever happened.

A pulse of radiant energy flashed as the laser finished its task, and then—

Silence.

Felix held his breath as the final particles of energy dissipated. Milly and Stephanie lay still for a moment, and then—

“Did it… work?” Milly’s voice was cautious as she wiggled her toes, feeling the familiar sensation of her own legs beneath her.

She rolled onto her back, glancing down—her body was perfectly restored. The black bodysuit hugged her curves just as it had before, and her form was whole once more.

Stephanie pushed herself up slightly, looking down at herself. A relieved smile spread across her face as she ran her hands down her sides.

“I’m… back.” She exhaled, her voice laced with relief. “Thank goodness.”

Felix let out a long sigh of relief, wiping the sweat from his brow.

“Ladies and gentlemen…” He turned to the audience with a triumphant grin. “I present to you… successful reassembly!”

The crowd erupted into applause, cheering and whistling as Milly and Stephanie swung their legs over the edges of the tables and stood, flashing confident smiles toward the audience.

But even as Felix basked in the applause, a small flicker of uncertainty lingered in the back of his mind.

“Let’s… hope that was the last surprise for tonight,” he murmured under his breath, barely audible above the crowd’s roar.

As Felix reached for the control panel to power down the quantum laser, his fingers just inches from the glowing interface, a sudden voice cut through the applause.

“Hold on a second, Felix.”

Stephanie’s tone was sharp, but laced with curiosity. She was still adjusting to standing upright again, her balance slightly off after the ordeal, but she didn’t let that stop her. She turned toward Felix, her hands on her hips, the deep red of her bodysuit gleaming under the stage lights.

“What’s the rush?” she asked, tilting her head slightly. “Aren’t you forgetting something?”

Felix blinked, his hand freezing just above the controls.

“Forgetting what?” He glanced at her, clearly puzzled.

Stephanie gave a knowing smirk, then gestured toward the front row where a group of elegantly dressed figures sat watching intently.

“What do the other magicians think?”
