Daniel flipped through the book, double-checking the instructions. "Alright, let's get you two put back together—" He paused, grinning mischievously. "Or maybe... almost put back together."
Veronica narrowed her eyes. "What does that mean?"
Elizabeth, still catching her breath from the tickling, smirked. "Oh, I like that tone."
Daniel grabbed the box containing Elizabeth’s legs and, instead of reattaching them to her, he slid them into place beneath Veronica’s upper half. Then, he took Veronica’s legs and positioned them under Elizabeth.
With a final tap on each box, the sections clicked into place. The magic of the illusion took hold, seamlessly fusing their halves together as if they had always been that way.
Elizabeth wiggled her new toes experimentally. "Huh. These aren’t mine."
Veronica glanced down, her eyes widening. "Oh, you’ve got to be kidding me." She flexed her new feet, adjusting to the unfamiliar sensation. "I knew you were going to pull something like this!"
Daniel leaned on the box, grinning. "Hey, you’ve got to admit—it’s a great twist on the trick."
Elizabeth turned her legs this way and that, admiring the smooth, precise movements. "Wow, Veronica, your legs are really toned."
"Yeah, well, you're too bouncy," Veronica shot back, shifting awkwardly as she adjusted to Elizabeth’s more energetic stance.
Daniel laughed. "Alright, alright. I can put you back to normal…"
Veronica crossed her arms. "You will put us back to normal."
Elizabeth tapped her new foot against the floor. "Or maybe we keep this for a little longer. It is kinda fun."
Veronica groaned. "Not funny, Elizabeth!"
Daniel just chuckled as he flipped through the book again. "Well, I guess that depends on what trick we decide to try next…"
Elizabeth took a few tentative steps, then a few more, testing her new legs. "Wow, this feels so weird… but also kinda fun!" She lifted herself onto her toes, wobbling slightly. "You’ve got really strong calves, Veronica."
Veronica scowled as she awkwardly shifted from foot to foot. "And you bounce way too much when you walk," she grumbled, nearly tripping over herself as she tried to move with Elizabeth’s more energetic, springy legs. "How do you not fall over all the time?"
Elizabeth grinned. "Practice! C'mon, let's see what we can do."
She playfully kicked a leg up, only to be caught off guard by the flexibility. "Whoa! Your legs are way more flexible than mine!" She grabbed her ankle, easily pulling it into a high stretch. "You should really do more dance classes, Veronica. This is amazing!"
Veronica, meanwhile, attempted to walk in a straight line, concentrating hard on keeping her balance. "Ugh. My muscle memory is all wrong. I feel like I’m walking in someone else’s—oh wait."
She huffed, planting her hands on her hips. "This is ridiculous. We need to fix this, now."
Elizabeth, ever the performer, wasn’t quite ready to give it up yet. She tested out a few dance moves, spinning on Veronica’s feet. "Hey, if I’ve got your legs, does that mean I can do all the stuff you were doing before?"
Veronica narrowed her eyes. "I was moving really well in the catsuit…" She looked down at her new legs and hesitated before attempting a careful, deliberate step. The moment she let herself relax into it, she found herself gliding across the floor with newfound grace. "Oh wow. This actually feels… kinda good?"
Elizabeth grinned. "See? Told you it’s fun!"
Veronica tested a few more steps, then a quick spin. "Alright, maybe this isn’t the worst thing ever. But it’s still not permanent!"
Meanwhile, Daniel, barely paying them any mind, had his nose buried in the book. "Hmm…
interesting… Looks like there’s another trick that could work with this whole ‘mixed-up body’ theme."
Veronica shot him a look. "Oh no. No more experiments! You are putting us back to normal!"
Elizabeth smirked. "Let’s just hear him out first…"
Veronica crossed her arms. “And you’re sure this will fix us?”
Daniel nodded, flipping through the book. “Yep. The Cocktail Party Trick is designed to swap parts around again. All you two need to do is sit in the box, and it’ll line everything back up.”
Elizabeth playfully nudged Veronica. “Come on, let’s get our proper legs back. Even though I am kinda enjoying this.”
Veronica sighed but followed along as Daniel led them to a strange, wide box with two open seats inside. There were two holes at the top for their torsos to fit through, while below, their lower halves would remain hidden inside. The design reminded Elizabeth of an old-fashioned party trick table, where people appeared to have the wrong body underneath.
As they sat down, Veronica adjusted herself, still getting used to Elizabeth’s legs. “Okay, let’s just get this over with.”
Daniel read from the book. “Alright, now I just need to close the box, give it a spin, and when I open it, everything should be back in place.”
Elizabeth raised an eyebrow. “Spin?”
Before either of them could react, Daniel flipped a lever, and the entire seated section of the box rotated around several times, making their heads blur with motion.
“Ugh! You could have warned us!” Veronica groaned, her vision still spinning.
Daniel chuckled, then unlocked the front panel of the box. “Okay… let’s see.”
The box opened, and Elizabeth and Veronica looked down at themselves.
Elizabeth gasped. “I’M BACK!” She quickly stretched her legs and wiggled her toes.
Veronica let out a deep sigh of relief. “Finally. I never want to do that again.”
Daniel smirked. “Oh, I wouldn’t be so sure about that.” He tapped the book. “Because I just found another trick that might be fun…”
Elizabeth grinned. “Ooh, what is it?”
Veronica groaned. “I swear, if this involves swapping anything again—”
Daniel just smiled mysteriously. “Well, let’s just say… it’s a very immersive illusion.”
Daniel flipped through the book, a grin spreading across his face. “This one’s called The Living Dummy Illusion.”
Elizabeth’s eyes lit up with curiosity. “Oh, that sounds interesting! What does it do?”
Veronica folded her arms. “Do I even want to know?”
