As Daniel and Veronica worked the locks, the manacles clicked open one by one, finally freeing Elizabeth from the trunk. She stepped out, rolling her shoulders and stretching her arms, the sleek catsuit hugging her frame as she adjusted to the unexpected change.
Then she moved—and froze.
Her steps were smooth, her balance effortless. She barely had to think as she shifted her weight from foot to foot, the heeled boots no longer feeling foreign or awkward. Her movements had a flow to them, a practiced elegance she definitely didn’t have before.
She glanced at Veronica. "Okay… this is weird."
Veronica folded her arms, smirking. "Yeah? Now you know how I felt."
Elizabeth turned her wrist, inspecting the now-open manacles. "It’s not just the outfit… I feel like I’ve done this before. Like I know how to move like this." She took a few steps, testing her footing. She even spun in place with surprising ease.
Daniel raised an eyebrow. "So, the trick doesn’t just swap positions and clothes… it swaps skills too?"
Veronica shrugged. "Makes sense. I was moving like this when I wore it, and now it’s her turn."
Elizabeth placed her hands on her hips, then gave an experimental high kick—graceful, precise, effortless. She blinked. "Okay, this is actually kind of cool."
Veronica laughed. "Told you."
Daniel grinned. "Well, if the outfit comes with the skills, maybe we should figure out what else is in that wardrobe."
Elizabeth turned to face him, a playful glint in her eye. "Oh, now that sounds dangerous."
Elizabeth and Veronica exchanged a glance before turning toward the wardrobe. It stood tall and imposing, its ornate wooden doors hiding who-knew-how-many secrets within. With a shared look of curiosity and excitement, they stepped forward, each reaching for a door handle.
As they pulled the doors open, the inside revealed a dazzling array of outfits. The wardrobe was impossibly large inside, filled with racks of clothing that spanned different eras, themes, and styles—some extravagant, some practical, and some downright theatrical.
Elizabeth ran her fingers along a row of shimmering gowns before stopping at a deep blue corset dress with silver embroidery, paired with an elegant half-mask adorned with intricate patterns. "This looks very Phantom of the Opera," she mused, lifting the mask to her face.
Veronica, on the other hand, was drawn to something entirely different. Among the Victorian coats and Renaissance tunics, she found a sleek, futuristic bodysuit lined with glowing blue seams. It was form-fitting but flexible, like something out of a sci-fi movie. "Now this is interesting," she said, pulling it out to examine it more closely.
Elizabeth grinned. "Guess we're going for two completely different vibes here."
Veronica smirked. "Well, if the last outfit taught me skills, I’m curious to see what this one does."
"Agreed." Elizabeth glanced back at the wardrobe, her excitement growing. "And who knows? Maybe we’ll find something even wilder in here next time."
With that, they each grabbed their chosen outfit and prepared to see just what kind of transformation awaited them.
Elizabeth held the elegant corset dress for a moment, then glanced over at Veronica’s sleek, futuristic bodysuit. The glowing blue lines along the seams pulsed faintly, giving it an almost otherworldly feel. A grin spread across Elizabeth’s face as she turned back to the wardrobe.
"You know what?" she said, pushing the dress back onto the rack. "If you're going sci-fi, I might as well join you."
She rummaged through the selection and soon pulled out a bodysuit almost identical to Veronica’s, but instead of glowing blue seams, hers had striking red lines that shimmered like embers. Holding it up, she gave an approving nod.
"Matching, but with a little flair," she said, smirking.
Veronica chuckled. "Seems fitting. You always were more fire than ice."
Elizabeth laughed as she slipped into the bodysuit. The material hugged her form perfectly, and as soon as she fastened the last clasp, she felt an odd sensation ripple through her limbs. It was subtle, but she could tell—just like Veronica had—the suit did something.
She moved her arms, testing the flexibility, and felt her muscles react faster, sharper. "Whoa," she breathed. "This is… different."
Veronica nodded. "Told you. It's like the outfit wants you to be faster, smoother."
Elizabeth grinned. "I think I can get used to this."
As the two of them admired their new looks, Daniel glanced up from the magician's book and raised an eyebrow. "You two look like you’re about to start a heist."
Elizabeth smirked. "Maybe we are."
"Guess that means we need a new trick to match," Veronica added, flexing her fingers.
Daniel sighed, flipping through the book. "Fine, fine. Let’s see what we’ve got that suits two futuristic thieves..."
Daniel flipped through the magician’s book, scanning for something that would fit their current theme. His eyes lit up as he found the perfect trick.
“The Heist,” he read aloud. “Designed for two assistants. It simulates infiltrating a secure vault by squeezing through impossibly tight spaces.” He looked up at Elizabeth and Veronica, smirking. “Looks like those bodysuits came with a matching challenge.”
Elizabeth and Veronica exchanged glances.
“That actually sounds kind of fun,” Elizabeth admitted.
Veronica crossed her arms. “As long as it’s not as weird as the last few tricks.”
Daniel led them to a pair of metallic boxes, each just a few inches wider than their bodies. The design matched the glowing seams of their bodysuits perfectly, as if the trick had been made just for them. The boxes had small openings on either end, barely large enough to crawl through.
“So we just… squeeze through these?” Veronica asked, poking at one of the openings.
“Exactly,” Daniel said. “You both have to make your way through the ‘ventilation shafts’ to reach the ‘vault.’” He glanced at the notes again. “Should be simple. But, uh… apparently, once you enter, the boxes adjust to make sure you fit.”
“Adjust how?” Elizabeth asked, narrowing her eyes.
Daniel hesitated. “…It doesn’t say.”
Elizabeth and Veronica both sighed.
“Alright,” Elizabeth said, rolling her shoulders. “Let’s do this.”
She climbed into the first box, and Veronica followed into the second. Almost immediately, both of them groaned.
“This is way tighter than I expected,” Elizabeth grumbled, wriggling forward on her elbows.
“No kidding,” Veronica muttered. “I swear, if I knew we’d be doing this, I would’ve worn my catsuit instead.”
Elizabeth smirked. “Too late. You claimed the catsuit already.”
Veronica sighed. “Yeah, yeah.”
As they crawled forward, the boxes seemed to shift around them, pressing in just enough to guide their movements. It wasn’t uncomfortable—at least, not yet—but it was definitely snug.
“Alright, Daniel,” Elizabeth called. “What’s next?”
Daniel flipped the page and grinned. “Oh, just wait. The fun part is about to start.”
