Veronica groaned as she crossed her arms, standing half-hidden behind the cabinet while Daniel and Elizabeth rummaged through the wardrobe. “Can you please find me something that doesn’t have sequins?”
Elizabeth grinned as she flipped through the clothing rack. “Well, our options are interesting. Let’s see… Renaissance gown with a corset, a Victorian steampunk dress with too many buckles, another showgirl outfit—oh, this one has even more feathers!”
“Absolutely not.”
Daniel pulled out a sparkling tuxedo with tails. “What about this? You could be a magician instead of the assistant.”
Veronica scowled. “And look like I walked out of a cabaret? Pass.”
Then she spotted it.
Hanging near the back of the wardrobe was a sleek, form-fitting black catsuit. The material shimmered slightly, smooth and flexible. Paired with fishnet stockings, elbow-length gloves, and a mask, it had a sleek, cat burglar aesthetic.
She reached for it almost instinctively.
Elizabeth raised an eyebrow. “Ooooh. This is giving ‘master thief about to break into a high-security vault.’”
Veronica sighed but grabbed the outfit anyway. “It’s this or the feathered nightmare.”
As she slipped into the catsuit, she was surprised by how well it fit—like it had been made just for her. The fabric hugged her frame without being restrictive, and the gloves felt almost like a second skin.
Daniel tilted his head. “Huh. It really suits you.”
Elizabeth nodded. “Yep, you definitely look like you belong in some kind of high-stakes heist.”
Veronica adjusted the gloves and sighed. “Great. Now can we please figure out how to get my real clothes back?”
Veronica let out an exasperated sigh as she spotted a pair of sleek black stiletto heels sitting neatly in the wardrobe. “Of course,” she muttered, picking them up and inspecting them. The heels were taller than anything she’d ever worn before, yet something about them felt… right.
With a resigned shrug, she slipped them on.
The moment she took her first step, something shifted.
Her usual grounded, no-nonsense gait transformed into something more fluid, almost effortless. She didn’t wobble or struggle to balance like she expected. Instead, she moved with a surprising grace, her footsteps light and controlled.
Elizabeth watched, a smirk forming on her lips. “Well, would you look at that? You’re gliding across the floor like you’ve been doing this your whole life.”
Veronica frowned slightly and took another step. The sway of her hips, the poised way her shoulders held—it all felt instinctive, like the outfit had trained her body to move in perfect synchronization with its design.
Daniel crossed his arms, watching with curiosity. “That’s… kind of impressive. You sure you’ve never worn anything like that before?”
Veronica scoffed, but there was a flicker of uncertainty in her expression. “Not in a million years.”
Yet, as she turned on her heel with the grace of a seasoned performer, she couldn’t shake the feeling that the outfit was doing more than just fitting her. It was shaping her.
Veronica’s astonishment deepened as she effortlessly moved across the floor, her steps fluid and controlled. She wasn’t just walking—she was gliding, each motion feeling precise and intentional. It was as if the outfit had awakened some hidden muscle memory she never knew she had.
Her fingers idly traced the seams of the sleek catsuit as she walked, and that’s when she noticed a small pouch attached to her hip. Curious, she unclasped it and pulled it open, revealing a neatly arranged set of tools.
Lockpicks. Small blades. A wire spool. Even a tiny glass cutter.
Veronica arched an eyebrow. “Okay… this is getting weird.”
Elizabeth peered over her shoulder and let out a low whistle. “Now that’s suspiciously convenient. Think the outfit came with a profession?”
Daniel chuckled. “Looks like you’re dressed for a heist, not a magic trick.”
Veronica didn’t reply. Instead, she reached for the pair of handcuffs hanging off an old metal rack in the corner of the lock-up. With an experimental click, she cuffed one around her wrist and held up the lockpicks with her free hand.
Might as well test this, right?
She slid the pick into the lock, expecting the usual trial and error—after all, she wasn’t exactly a professional thief. But to her surprise, her hands moved instinctively, her fingers adjusting with an expertise she didn’t understand.
A soft click sounded.
The cuff sprang open.
Veronica stared at the open cuff in disbelief. “Okay. What the hell?”
Elizabeth’s eyes sparkled with mischief as she leaned in closer. “Oh, come on, Veronica—try it with both wrists locked! Let’s see if this new cat burglar persona can handle a real challenge.”
Veronica shot her a wary look. “You’re loving this way too much.”
“Of course I am! You’re basically turning into a real-life action heroine!” Elizabeth teased, nudging the cuffs toward her. “Besides, you already picked them once. Think of it as levelling up.”
Daniel chuckled, flipping through the book to see if there were any more unexpected surprises about the outfit. “I’m starting to wonder if every trick has these lingering effects. It’s like the magic isn’t just for the show—it’s changing how we feel and act.”
Veronica hesitated, the weight of the sleek stiletto heels grounding her even as the outfit made her feel unnaturally light on her feet. “Fine. But if I get stuck like this, you’re explaining it to my boss when I don’t show up for work.”
With a resigned sigh, she locked both cuffs around her wrists, the cold metal clicking into place. Taking a deep breath, she reached for the lockpicks, maneuvering them into her grip.
It was awkward at first, her fingers fumbling as she tried to angle the pick into the tiny keyhole. But then, something clicked—not in the cuffs, but in her mind. Her focus sharpened, and her muscles remembered movements she hadn’t learned.
“Okay, you’ve got this,” she murmured to herself, ignoring Elizabeth’s barely-contained glee.
The pick danced within the lock, her hands moving almost of their own accord. It felt like she was watching herself from a distance, the tension in the lock shifting with every tiny movement.
Click.
The first cuff sprang open.
Veronica’s eyes widened, and with a determined set to her jaw, she worked the second lock.
Click.
Both wrists free, she held up the open cuffs, her expression a mix of triumph and bewilderment. “I… I actually did it. How did I actually do that?”
Elizabeth clapped her hands. “See? You’re a natural! Or… the outfit’s magic is seriously impressive.”
Daniel nodded, a thoughtful look crossing his face. “I wonder if these tricks are more than just illusions—like, they’re transformative somehow. Maybe the magician who owned all this found a way to make magic change a person, not just entertain.”
Veronica rubbed her wrists, still feeling the lingering sensation of the metal. “Well, as long as it changes me back when we’re done, I guess I’m game to find out.”
Elizabeth nudged her playfully. “Oh, I don’t know. I think ‘Veronica the Cat Burglar’ has a nice ring to it. Ready for your next mission, master thief?”
Veronica smirked despite herself. “Alright, what’s the next trick, magic man?” she asked, turning to Daniel. “Let’s see what this book throws at us next.”
This day was only getting stranger by the minute, and the magic of the storage unit felt like it was just starting to unfold its secrets.
Elizabeth, eyes gleaming with excitement, turned to the wardrobe. “Alright, if Veronica gets a whole new look, I want to see what else this place has to offer.”
She flung open the ornate wooden doors, revealing a collection of costumes that seemed to shimmer under the dim storage unit lighting. Rows of intricately designed outfits greeted her—dresses embroidered with gold thread, corsets laced with ribbons, flowing capes, and more dazzling showgirl outfits like the one Veronica had briefly worn.
Elizabeth ran her fingers along the fabrics, marveling at the textures. Silk, velvet, sequins, even strange materials she couldn’t quite identify. “This stuff is incredible…” she murmured.
Behind her, Veronica was still twisting and turning, getting used to her newfound grace. She stepped onto an overturned crate, testing her balance. Her stiletto heels landed silently, the movement so precise it startled even her. “This outfit is doing something to me,” she muttered, running a hand over the sleek fabric. “I feel like a thief. It’s not just for show.”
Elizabeth glanced back at her, grinning. “Maybe it’s magic guiding you. You looked like a total pro picking those cuffs.”
Veronica huffed but didn’t argue.
Elizabeth turned back to the wardrobe and pulled out an outfit that immediately caught her eye—a deep red and gold burlesque-style dress with a corset bodice, layered skirts that swished dramatically, and matching gloves that extended past the elbows. “Ohhh, I love this one.” She held it up against herself, then turned to Daniel. “Thoughts?”
Daniel looked up from the book and smirked. “Very fitting. You’re already dramatic enough, might as well lean into it.”
Elizabeth laughed. “Exactly! If Veronica’s going full Cat Burglar, I’m going for the spotlight.”
She slipped behind a makeshift curtain to change. A few minutes later, she stepped out, adjusting the corset laces and smoothing down the skirts. “Ta-da!” she announced, striking a pose. The moment she did, something felt… different.
The gloves clung to her fingers like they had been tailored for her, the corset cinched her waist perfectly without discomfort, and the heels—slightly shorter than Veronica’s—felt natural, like she had danced in them a thousand times.
Daniel raised an eyebrow. “You look like you belong on stage.”
Elizabeth beamed. “I feel like I belong on stage.” She twirled, the skirt flaring out around her. “It’s like this outfit wants me to perform.”
Veronica, still adjusting her utility belt, crossed her arms. “So, what now? Are you going to break into song?”
Elizabeth winked. “Maybe. Or maybe I should try an illusion fit for a star.”
She turned to Daniel with a playful challenge in her eyes. “What’s the next trick, oh wise magician?”
Daniel flipped through the book, scanning for something suitably dramatic to match Elizabeth’s newfound stage presence. Then he found it. A grin spread across his face as he turned the book around to show her.
“The Enchanted Partition.”
Elizabeth leaned in, reading the description aloud. “A box illusion where the assistant steps inside, multiple blades slide through the compartments, and then… oh—this one actually separates me into sections!”
Veronica peered over Elizabeth’s shoulder. “Great. More dismemberment. Just what we needed.”
Elizabeth nudged her playfully. “Oh, come on! This is classic stage magic! Besides, if I’m going to be a star, I need to perfect the art of the dramatic reveal.”
