Jenny adjusted the strap of her bag and checked her phone for the hundredth time that evening.
The message from her friend Samantha still sat there, unchanged: "Sorry, Jen! Feeling rough, can't make it tonight. Enjoy the show!" She had hesitated before replying with a simple "Thanks!" but now, standing outside the grand, velvet-draped entrance to the theatre, she wondered if she should have just stayed home.
Jenny McAllister took a quick look in her mirror, she was an average height lady, with a few extra pounds on her body she thought, hidden underneath a big purple jumper dress that came down to her knees, her legs clad in black leggings and a pair of purple ballet pumps.
She hadn’t been to a magic show before. Conventions, yes—board game nights, absolutely—but a magic show? It wasn’t her usual scene. Yet, there was something about the deep red of the theatre’s awning, the flickering golden lights, and the excited murmur of the crowd that made her pulse quicken.
Still, Kashmir the Traveller sounded enigmatic, like a wizard from her D&D games. She preferred to play the barbarian princess, but there was no way she could channel her inner warrior from her IT role in the world of SQL.
She tugged at the sleeve of her purple jumper dress and stepped inside, drawn forward by the flow of the audience. The place had an old-world charm—ornate chandeliers, plush red seating, and that distinct scent of aged theatre wood and anticipation. She found her seat near the middle, slipping her phone into her bag as the lights dimmed.
A thrill of nervous excitement shivered through her—why was she feeling this way? It was just a show, after all. But something about the atmosphere felt charged, like the moment before rolling the dice in a high-stakes game.
The stage itself was dark with a blue hue, a minimalist scene considering the show was advertised as an amazing show of illusion.
A hush fell over the audience, followed by a single note from an unseen instrument—a deep, reverberating sound that sent a shiver down her spine. Then, with a sudden burst of light, he was there.
The magician stood at the centre of the stage, dressed in an elaborate, midnight-blue silk smoking jacket adorned with silver embroidery. His dark hair, streaked with a touch of silver at the temples, a trimmed beard, framed sharp, knowing eyes that seemed to pierce through the dim theatre.
He carried himself like a figure from an old painting—mystical, otherworldly, as if he had stepped out of time itself. A tall, elegant cane rested in one hand, not for support but as an extension of his presence.
His gaze swept across the crowd, and for a brief second, Jenny could have sworn his eyes locked onto hers.
She shifted in her seat, suddenly feeling exposed, like a chess piece about to be moved.
“Ladies and gentlemen,” he said, “it appears my assistant has had a bit of an accident backstage—nothing serious, just a slip—but I find myself in need of a new assistant for the evening.”
Murmurs rippled through the crowd, laughter mixing with curiosity. Jenny smiled faintly, expecting Kashmir to pick someone from the front row. Instead, his eyes found hers again.
“You, in the purple,” he said, voice smooth as silk. “Would you help me?”
Jenny blinked. Her stomach flipped. The audience turned to look at her, a sea of expectant faces. A nervous energy shot through her, a mix of fear and exhilaration. She felt her face flush, but something in her—perhaps that growing desire for adventure—made her feet move before her brain could stop them.
She stood, heart pounding, and walked toward the stage.
Kashmir greeted her with a warm smile and gestured for her to stand beside him. “Tell me, what’s your name?”
“Jenny,” she replied, voice steady despite her nerves.
“Jenny! Lovely. And tell us, Jenny, who are you here with tonight?”
Jenny hesitated for a moment. “Uh, no one. My friend was supposed to come, but she wasn’t feeling well.”
Kashmir nodded thoughtfully. “Ah, a brave soul venturing into the unknown alone. And what do you do for a living, Jenny?”
“I’m an SQL administrator,” she answered.
Kashmir’s brows lifted with intrigue. “SQL administrator? Fascinating. And what does an SQL administrator do, exactly?”
Jenny chuckled nervously. “Well, I work with databases, managing and organizing data, making sure everything runs smoothly.”
Kashmir gave a slow, approving nod. “Ah, data… structure… control over vast information. Yes, I will definitely need those skills.”
Jenny blinked in confusion. “What?”
“Oh, nothing, nothing,” Kashmir said airily. “For now, let’s focus on the show, shall we?”
He then gestured toward a sleek, ornate cabinet that appeared under a spotlight.
“For our first trick, let’s make you look the part of a true magician’s assistant! Tell me, Jenny, what do you think a classic magician’s assistant should look like?”
Jenny hesitated. “Uh… fishnets? Bodysuits? That kind of thing?”
Kashmir smiled. “And have you ever worn anything like that?”
Jenny laughed. “No, never.”
“Well, let’s fix that. Step into this dressing chamber, and let’s see what happens.”
Jenny walked inside, her head still visible above the top of the small changing booth. Kashmir tapped the side twice with his cane, and the audience held its breath. A moment later, Jenny stepped out—now dressed in a sleek, shimmering bodysuit with fishnet stockings, black heels, and a touch of glitter. Gasps and applause erupted from the crowd.
She looked down at herself, eyes wide. This isn’t possible. I was wearing my dress just a second ago.
“Now Jenny”, Kashmir quickly grabbing her hand “How should an assistant have her make up on stage?”
“Glamorous, I suppose”, Jenny replied, still wondering how on earth her dress had changed, in fact all of her clothing had changed she realised.
Kashmir produced a mirror from a pocket and handed it to Jenny to look at, as Jenny placed the mirror away, her face had been made up, more glamourous in her life than she had ever had.
The audience clapped again, amazed at the transformation on Jenny’s face.
Jenny took a breath and gazed at the audience clapping, it felt good. But what did she have to do as Kashmir’s assistant? She was about to find out.
As the lights died down on the changing box, another light flashed into light and a tall upright box was on the right side of the stage.
Kashmir, taking Jenny’s hand by the fingers walked the pair of them to the cabinet.
“Now Jenny, for the first illusion of the night, I want you to step into the box and face the audience please.”
As Kashmir opened the doors to the cabinet, Jenny stepped in, wondering what was going to happen next. She felt the squeeze of the cabinet, thinking there was no room for her to move, but she had volunteered and was starting to enjoy everyone watching her.
Kashmir closed the doors to the cabinet, Jenny’s face and legs were visible to the audience, she was still getting used to the feel of the fishnets on her legs, very different to her normal comfy leggings.
Kashmir then spoke to the audience, “Now as you can see, Jenny is locked into my first cabinet of the night.
Kashmir closed the doors to the cabinet, and the audience held its collective breath. Jenny’s heart raced as she stood inside the cramped space, her body pressed against the wooden walls. She could feel the cool metal of the cabinet against her skin, the air thick with anticipation.
Kashmir’s voice, smooth and commanding, echoed through the cabinet. “Ladies and gentlemen, for our next illusion, we will perform the Spike Routine. Jenny, you will feel each spike as it passes through your body, but you must trust me to keep you safe. Can you do that, Jenny?”
Jenny nodded, her voice a whisper. “I can try.”
“Good,” Kashmir replied, his tone reassuring. “Now, let’s begin.”
The audience leaned forward, eyes wide with anticipation. Kashmir approached the cabinet, a long, gleaming spike in his hand. He positioned it carefully, and with a fluid motion, he slid it through the cabinet. Jenny gasped as she felt the sensation of the spike passing through her body, but to her amazement, she felt no pain, only a strange, tingling sensation.
Kashmir’s voice was calm and steady. “Are you alright, Jenny?”
“I’m… I’m fine,” she managed to say, her voice trembling.
“Excellent. Let’s continue.”
One by one, Kashmir inserted more spikes, each one passing through the cabinet and, seemingly, through Jenny’s body. She felt the sensation of each spike, but the experience was surreal, almost dreamlike. After ten spikes, Jenny felt like a living pin cushion, yet she remained unharmed.
Kashmir stepped back, and the audience gasped in awe. He gestured to the side of the cabinet, and a panel slowly opened, revealing the spikes passing through Jenny’s body. She could see the spikes, the metal gleaming in the stage lights, and yet she felt no pain, only a strange, tingling sensation that was both terrifying and exhilarating.
Kashmir turned to the audience, his eyes twinkling with mischief. “Ladies and gentlemen, can you believe what you’re seeing?”
The audience erupted into applause and cheers, their amazement palpable. Kashmir gestured to Jenny, and she slowly raised her hand, waving at the audience. Her movement was smooth, and the spikes seemed to move with her, as if they were part of her.
Jenny’s heart pounded in her chest, a mix of fear and exhilaration. She had never felt anything like this, a sensation that defied logic and reason. Kashmir’s voice, calm and reassuring, broke through the moment. “Jenny, you are doing beautifully. One more spike, and we will be done.”
He inserted the final spike, and Jenny felt the last tingling sensation. Kashmir stepped back, and the panel on the cabinet opened fully, revealing Jenny completely. The spikes were visible through her body, yet she stood there, unharmed, her expression a mix of amazement and triumph.
The audience erupted into thunderous applause, their cheers ringing through the theatre. Kashmir bowed, his eyes locking onto Jenny’s one last time. “Thank you, Jenny. You were magnificent.”
And then Kashmir quickly grabbed each spike to remove them from the cabinet, the audience watching each spike sliding through Jenny’s body. All Jenny could feel was a whistling through her body as each spike flew through her body.
Each spike, as they flew across the stage then disappeared.
Once all spikes were removed, Kashmir helped her step out of the cabinet, and she felt the world come back into focus. The spikes were gone, and she was standing there, unharmed and unmarked. The audience’s applause was deafening, and Jenny felt a surge of pride and exhilaration. She had done it, and she had done it magnificently.
Kashmir took her hand and led her to the centre of the stage. “Ladies and gentlemen, meet Jenny McAllister, a true magician’s assistant.”
The audience’s applause grew louder, and Jenny felt a smile spread across her face. She had stepped into the unknown and come out the other side, transformed and amazed.
Kashmir turned to her, his eyes gleaming with a mix of excitement and mischief. “Jenny, would you like to continue being my assistant for the next trick?”
Jenny paused, her mind racing. She wasn’t sure what was going to happen next, but she was really enjoying the attention. It was a shame her friend Samantha wasn’t here to see her, but the applause sounded great. After a moment, she nodded, a determined smile on her face.
“Yes, I would.”
Kashmir’s smile widened. “Excellent choice, Jenny. For our next trick, we will perform one of the classics of modern illusion—sawing you in half.”
A murmur of anticipation rippled through the audience. Kashmir continued, “But before we begin, I must ensure that your costume matches the box for this trick. What you’re wearing now doesn’t quite fit the theme.”
The costume cabinet reappeared under a new spotlight, and Kashmir gestured for Jenny to step inside. She did so, her head still visible to the audience. Kashmir tapped the side of the cabinet twice with his cane, and a moment later, Jenny stepped out—now dressed in a hot pink catsuit, but her feet were now uncovered, including that blue dolphin tattoo on her foot she got one holiday many years ago. The audience gasped and clapped, amazed at the transformation.
Jenny smiled, wondering how her costume had changed again. The hot pink catsuit hugged her body, sleek and form-fitting, a stark contrast to the sleek, dark box that awaited her.
Kashmir approached the new cabinet, two horizontal rectangular boxes painted in the same hot pink colour as Jenny's catsuit, with hinged lids. The boxes were on a raised platform and wheeled.
“Ladies and gentlemen, this is a classic illusion, but I assure you, it will be anything but ordinary. Jenny, if you would step into the box, please.”
The lid was opened, and Jenny took a deep breath and stepped into the box, lying down on the padded surface. She wondered what she would need to do for this trick, wondering when Kashmir would tell her what to do.
Kashmir closed the lid and placed wooden slots to secure Jenny's head poking out of one end of the boxes and another to secure her feet that were poking out of the other end.
The audience held its breath as Kashmir examined the large, gleaming saw and positioned it carefully. The blade was as wide as Kashmir was tall, and he walked into the audience with the blade, asking members of the audience in a row to touch the blade to check it was solid.
Jenny was lying there, wondering what was happening. She was now sealed, lying down, and she tried to test the lid with her fingers, but it was locked shut and not moving. She couldn’t quite see the blade in the audience, just how people were reacting.
Kashmir returned to the stage with the elongated saw. “Now, ladies and gentlemen, watch closely,” Kashmir said, his voice smooth and commanding. “Jenny, can you hear me?”
“Loud and clear,” Jenny replied, her voice steady but tinged with a hint of nervousness. She still couldn’t see the blade but felt there was something metallic in the area.
“Good. Trust me, and you will be safe.”
Kashmir began to saw through the box, the sound of the saw cutting through the air, the heavy rasping of the sound of wood being cut. And yet, Jenny felt that her belly was being brushed as the saw divided her.
Once the saw had gone through her body, two large blades were then inserted into the box. Kashmir then unclipped some clasps, and the audience watched in amazement as the box was divided into two halves.
Kashmir then separated the halves, and the audience gasped in shock. Jenny’s head and upper body were clearly visible in one half, while her legs and feet were in the other half.
Kashmir’s voice cut through the tension. “Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you the two halves of Jenny McAllister!”
Kashmir then opened the sides of the cabinets, and unlike the normal version of the illusion, the entire sides were open so everyone could see that Jenny was divided.
After thirty seconds, the audience erupted into applause and cheers when they had seen what had happened to Jenny. Despite the strange sensation of being sawed in half, she felt a surge of exhilaration. She could hear the audience’s amazement and felt a sense of pride in her role.
Jenny could only look at the audience, still wondering what had happened and how the trick actually worked. She still could feel her legs and feet, and then Kashmir brought her lower half to her head. It then dawned on her, this was not a trick but actually happening. She could see the blue dolphin tattoo on her left foot, and she was moving her toes, rolling her ankles and feet. What had she got herself into?
Kashmir’s voice was calm and reassuring. “Jenny, you are doing beautifully. One more step, and we will be done.”
Jenny’s heart was pounding, but she managed to nod. “I can do this,” she whispered to herself, more for her own reassurance than for Kashmir to hear.
Kashmir then opened the sides of the cabinets, and unlike the normal version of the illusion, the entire sides were open so everyone could see that Jenny was divided. After thirty seconds, the audience erupted into applause and cheers when they had seen what had happened to Jenny.

Before the audience could recover, Kashmir added an extra element to the trick. Lights flashed on the other side of the stage, and four boxes of different colours—blue, red, yellow, and green—appeared. Each box contained a mannequin’s legs, dressed in different outfits: tights, leggings, stockings, and a skirt.
Kashmir turned to the audience, his eyes twinkling with mischief. “Ladies and gentlemen, we have one more surprise for you. Please choose a different coloured box for Jenny’s lower half.”
The audience murmured with excitement, and a young boy in the front row called out, “Green!”
Kashmir nodded approvingly. “Excellent choice. The green box it is.”
He carefully attached the lower green box, containing the mannequin’s legs dressed in a green skirt, to the box containing Jenny’s upper half. Jenny could feel her own legs, but now, she could also see the green skirted legs attached to her.
Kashmir then wheeled the box with the green skirted legs offstage, and Jenny could still feel her legs, getting used to the sensation of these new legs that suddenly appeared flesh-like. The audience was in awe, their eyes wide with amazement.
Kashmir’s voice was calm and reassuring. “Jenny, you are doing beautifully. One more step, and we will be done.”
He carefully brought the two halves of the box back together, removed the blade, and opened the lid. Jenny sat up, and suddenly kicked her legs in the air, where did that come from she thought to herself.
The audience’s applause grew even louder, and Jenny felt a wave of relief and excitement.
Kashmir helped her out of the box and led her back to the centre of the stage. “Ladies and gentlemen, meet Jenny McAllister, a true magician’s assistant, once again!”
The audience’s applause was deafening, and Jenny felt a smile spread across her face. She had stepped into the unknown and come out the other side, transformed and amazed. She had faced her fears and come out stronger, and the audience’s reaction was a testament to her bravery and the magic of the evening.

Kashmir turned to Jenny, his eyes twinkling with mischief. “Jenny, would you like to continue being my assistant for the next trick?”
Jenny’s heart raced, but she felt a surge of excitement. She had no idea what was going on, but she was thoroughly enjoying the show now. “Hell yes, bring it on, Kashmir!” she exclaimed, her voice steady and determined.
Kashmir’s smile widened, his eyes gleaming with delight. “Delighted, Jenny. I am delighted that you are going to continue.”
The audience erupted into cheers, and Kashmir raised his hands to quiet them. “Ladies and gentlemen, for our next trick, we present to you a gothic masterpiece. A classic illusion that will take your breath away. Please, give us your attention.”
The lights dimmed, and a single spotlight illuminated a large, ornate gothic-style cabinet. It was tall and imposing, with intricate carvings and a mysterious aura surrounding it. Kashmir gestured for Jenny to step forward, and she approached the cabinet with a mix of anticipation and excitement.
“Jenny, this is where our next journey begins,” Kashmir said, his voice smooth and commanding. “Are you ready?”
Jenny took a deep breath and nodded. “I’m ready, Kashmir. Let’s do this.”
Kashmir reached into the air and, seemingly out of nowhere, produced a long, flowing black cloak. He draped it over Jenny’s shoulders, covering her face and body. Jenny wondered why Kashmir did this until she felt the fabric shift and change around her.
“Close your eyes, Jenny,” Kashmir instructed softly. “Trust me.”
Jenny closed her eyes, feeling the cloak envelop her. She could hear the rustling of fabric and the faint sound of whispers, as if the cloak itself was alive. After a moment, Kashmir gently removed the cloak, and Jenny opened her eyes.
She was now dressed and made up, looking like a theatrical gothic female vampire. Her dress was a deep, flowing black with intricate lace and velvet trim. Her makeup was dark and dramatic, with heavy eyeliner and a pale, almost ghostly complexion. Her lips were a deep, blood-red, and she could feel her canines had grown, becoming very pointy.
Jenny’s eyes widened in amazement. She touched her face, feeling the transformation. “Kashmir, what… what happened?”
Kashmir’s smile was warm and reassuring. “You are now the perfect gothic vampire, Jenny. Embrace the transformation.”
He gestured to the audience, and they gasped in awe. Jenny could see the reflection of her new appearance in the cabinet’s glass, and she felt a strange, thrilling sense of power and mystery.
Kashmir led her to the centre of the stage, her new, elegant dress swaying with each step. The audience was silent, their eyes wide with wonder.
“Ladies and gentlemen, meet Jenny McAllister, the gothic vampire,” Kashmir announced, his voice resonant and dramatic.
The audience erupted into applause and cheers, their amazement palpable. Jenny felt a surge of confidence and excitement. She had no idea what was going to happen next, but she was ready for whatever the night had in store.
Kashmir’s eyes met hers, and he nodded approvingly. “Jenny, you are doing beautifully. Let’s continue the journey.”
He opened the gothic cabinet, and Jenny stepped inside, the audience holding its breath in anticipation. The stage was set for the next magical adventure, and Jenny was more determined than ever to see it through.
Kashmir closed the cabinet door, and the world went dark. Jenny could hear the faint sound of whispers and the rustling of fabric. She felt a strange, tingling sensation all over her body, as if the air itself was alive with magic.
“Jenny, close your eyes and focus on the transformation,” Kashmir’s voice whispered through the darkness. “Let the magic flow through you.”
Jenny closed her eyes and took a deep breath, feeling the power of the transformation. She could sense the cabinet moving, as if it were a living entity. The whispers grew louder, and she felt a gentle pressure around her body, as if she were being embraced by the darkness.
After a moment, the cabinet stopped moving, and Kashmir’s voice rang out clearly. “Ladies and gentlemen, the transformation is complete. Witness the gothic masterpiece.”
The cabinet door slowly opened, and Jenny stepped out, feeling a surge of power and confidence. The audience gasped in amazement. She was no longer just a gothic vampire; she was a figure of dark elegance and mystery. Her dress flowed around her like a shadow, and her eyes glowed with an otherworldly light.
Kashmir gestured to the audience. “Jenny, you are now part of the illusion. Follow my lead.”
He led her to the centre of the stage and turned to the audience. “Ladies and gentlemen, did you know that one of the most fascinating abilities of a vampire is the power to transform into a bat? This transformation is not just a legend; it is a true testament to the ancient and powerful magic that governs the world of the gothic vampire.”
Jenny felt a strange sensation in her body, as if something was shifting within her. Kashmir continued, his voice smooth and commanding. “Jenny, you are about to demonstrate this incredible ability. Close your eyes and embrace the transformation.”
Jenny closed her eyes and focused on the sensation. She felt her body begin to change, her limbs growing lighter and her form becoming smaller. Her dress seemed to melt away, and she could feel the air around her becoming more fluid. Her senses heightened, and she felt a new, agile form taking over.
Kashmir’s voice was soft and reassuring. “Jenny, you are now a bat. Embrace this new form.”
Jenny opened her eyes, but she saw the world through different eyes. She was now a small, sleek bat, her wings spread wide. She flapped her wings and took to the air, circling around the stage. The audience gasped in amazement, their eyes wide with wonder.
Kashmir raised his hands, and the lights dimmed, casting the stage in a soft, mysterious glow. “Ladies and gentlemen, witness the power of the gothic vampire. Jenny, show the audience your flight.”
Jenny circled the stage, her wings beating softly. She flew over the audience, feeling the air rush past her, and the audience watched in rapt attention, their eyes fixed on her. She felt a strange, magnetic pull, and she swooped down low, skimming the heads of the audience members. The audience erupted into applause and cheers, their amazement palpable.
Kashmir then produced a small, silver chalice and placed it on a small pedestal. “Jenny, return to your human form and complete the transformation.”
Jenny flew back to the centre of the stage and, with a final flap of her wings, transformed back into her human form. She stood there, dressed in her gothic vampire attire, feeling a sense of power and confidence. The audience erupted into thunderous applause, their cheers ringing through the theatre.
Kashmir smiled, his eyes gleaming with delight. “Ladies and gentlemen, meet Jenny McAllister, the gothic vampire, a true magician’s assistant.”
The audience erupted into applause, their cheers ringing through the theatre. Jenny felt a sense of pride and exhilaration. She had faced her fears and embraced the magic, and the audience’s reaction was a testament to her bravery and the magic of the evening.
Kashmir and Jenny took a bow, Kashmir then asked Jenny, did she like Superheroes?
