Elizabeth’s voice came through, quieter now but laced with something deep, unnatural. “I don’t know what’s happening. It feels... like I’m not fully me anymore. Daniel, please... finish it.”

Daniel’s hands hovered above the head, unsure of what to do next. The instructions were supposed to be foolproof, but whatever this magic was, it had a mind of its own—something far beyond the tricks they’d been playing with.

Something was changing within Elizabeth. And the magic that had once felt like innocent fun was now something much darker and much more real than any of them could have imagined.

Daniel quickly flipped through the book, panic rising in his chest. His eyes scanned the pages rapidly, desperately searching for any clue as to what had gone wrong. The air in the room felt heavy, as though the very walls were holding their breath.

His heart skipped a beat when he finally found a note at the bottom of the page he had missed earlier. His fingers traced the words as he read aloud, his voice shaky:

“Performance Notes: Before the assistant can be fully restored, the feet must be tickled. This action is crucial for re-aligning the magic and restoring the body’s connection to the mind. Failure to do so may result in an incomplete restoration.”

Daniel’s stomach dropped. “No, no... this can't be right. I missed it.” He looked over at Elizabeth, who was still floating above her disassembled body, her head twitching and eyes wide, as if she was becoming more aware of the situation.

Veronica, standing near the doorway, frowned. "Tickled? Is that really the step we're missing here? You’ve got to be kidding me."

Elizabeth’s voice, though still clear, now had a trace of something else in it—something strange, otherworldly. “I... I don’t feel like myself, Daniel. Something’s wrong. Please hurry.”

Daniel’s eyes darted to the instructions again. There it was, in plain text. The feet had to be tickled part of the process to ground the assistant back to their body, the trick’s final step.

“I—I have to...” Daniel stammered, standing up and pacing in frustration. He quickly turned to the boxes where Elizabeth’s feet were resting, still floating above her body. They were perfectly still, just as the instructions had said.

“I can’t believe I missed that...” He muttered under his breath, then glanced at Elizabeth’s disembodied feet. The thought felt absurd, but there was no denying it: he needed to complete the trick, and this was the last step.

Elizabeth, sensing his hesitation, spoke again, her voice tinged with unease. “Daniel, please... don’t leave me like this.”

With a resigned sigh, Daniel approached the feet. He leaned over cautiously and reached for them. There was a moment of hesitation, his hands hovering above the soles, unsure of what the magic might do.

Taking a deep breath, he lightly ran his fingers over the arches of her feet. The effect was immediate.

Elizabeth’s body twitched, her legs jerking as though a jolt of energy had surged through them. She let out a surprised laugh, one that seemed out of place, but it wasn’t unpleasant. The sound of her laughter mixed with the crackling energy filling the air, and for a moment, it felt like the world was holding its breath.

But just as quickly as the energy had surged, it seemed to stabilize. Elizabeth's body, still floating, began to shimmer with a soft light. The ethereal feeling around her started to recede, and for the first time in what felt like ages, Daniel felt a sense of relief.

Her head floated back toward her body with a gentle whoosh, and as it reattached to her torso, the previously strained connection between her body and mind seemed to realign. Her limbs, which had been twitching, slowly began to settle, moving more naturally.

Elizabeth’s voice came through again, now clear and full of her usual energy. “Okay... okay! I feel... myself again. That was... weird. But, uh, it actually felt kind of good?”

Daniel stood back; eyes wide. "That was... intense. That was something else."

Veronica, who had been watching with crossed arms and a sceptical look, took a deep breath. "So, what? Is it over now? She’s back to normal?"

Elizabeth blinked, looking around, her body now fully restored. "Yeah... I think so. Just... wow. That was... not what I was expecting from a magic trick." She wiggled her fingers and toes, grinning. "But... I’ve never felt so alive."

Daniel took a step back, running a hand through his hair, finally allowing himself to breathe properly. He had done it—he had pulled off the trick, despite all the strange and unexpected complications. But as he looked at Elizabeth, standing whole again, he couldn’t shake the feeling that something deeper was going on. The magic wasn’t just an illusion. It was real—real in ways he hadn’t yet begun to understand.

And if he was going to keep performing these tricks, he would have to be prepared for whatever came next.

“Alright,” he said, clearing his throat. “Let’s... let’s try something else next time, I really could do with a drink. But I think we’ve got the hang of this one.”

Veronica raised an eyebrow. “That’s... one way to describe it. But I’ve got a feeling you’ve just scratched the surface of what this stuff can do.”

Daniel’s gaze shifted to the book in his hands, a spark of excitement igniting within him. “Yeah. This is just the beginning.”

The feeling in the room had changed, subtle but unmistakable. The magic wasn’t done with them yet, and neither was the mystery of the props, the storage unit, or the strange, powerful magician who had left it all behind.

One thing was certain: whatever came next, they were in it together.

The room had fallen into an uneasy silence, the hum of the magical energy still lingering in the air, but now there was a quiet calm.

The trick had been completed—successfully, if not a bit more unnervingly than any of them had anticipated. Elizabeth, now fully restored, was taking a moment to collect herself, flexing her fingers and stretching her limbs with a slow, satisfied grin. Daniel and Veronica, on the other hand, were still processing the experience, their minds racing with what had just happened.

But the sound of the storage unit door closing echoed through the room, snapping them back to reality.

"Well," Daniel said, rubbing his face, exhaustion settling into his bones. "I think it's time to call it a day. This place isn't going to stay open forever."

Veronica sighed, stepping toward the exit. "Yeah, I think we've pushed our luck enough for one day."

Elizabeth, still catching her breath, gave Daniel a sideways glance. "Are you sure you’re done? I mean, that was... something else. You can’t just walk away from that.”

Daniel smiled, but it was a tired, almost nervous smile. "I think we’ll come back. There’s still a lot to figure out." He glanced at the book, the heavy weight of it suddenly feeling more like a promise than a simple manual. For some reason, the song Kashmir kept going through his head,

“I don’t know how much more I can take,” Veronica said, shaking her head with a sceptical grin. "Next thing you know, you’ll have us disappearing and reappearing at the flip of a coin."

Elizabeth’s laughter was light, but there was an edge of excitement in it. "Honestly, after what we just did, I’d be surprised if that wasn’t next."

The three of them stood at the door, the storage unit a mix of mystery, magic, and what felt like the calm before something far bigger. Daniel was still holding the book in his hands, the weight of it a reminder that they were only scratching the surface of whatever the previous magician had left behind.

"Let’s go," Daniel said, his voice steady now. "But we’ll be back. I need to figure this out."

They left the unit, the door clicking shut behind them with a finality that somehow didn’t feel final at all. The magic had only just begun to unfold, and the questions about what lay ahead lingered in the back of their minds as they walked down the hallway and out into the fading light of day.

But even as they left, Daniel couldn’t shake the feeling that something—or someone—was watching them, waiting for them to return. Whatever the future held, they were already too deep to back out now.
