Chapter Four: One becomes two, two become one
Chapter Three: Restoration of a Lady
Veronica groaned. “I hate that I know exactly where this is going.”
Daniel, trying to focus, quickly read through the next section of the instructions. The book was still open in front of him, though his hands were trembling slightly from the odd sensation in the air. The faint humming from the cabinet continued, an undercurrent of magic, barely perceptible but undeniable.
"Alright, next step..." Daniel muttered, looking back to Elizabeth, who was still grinning in a dazed sort of wonder. He could tell she wasn’t scared, just thrilled by the strange sensation of being separated, almost as if her body had become something entirely separate from herself.
Veronica folded her arms, clearly struggling to maintain a semblance of calm. "Just... please tell me this next part is a reversal step."
Daniel ignored her, focusing on the text. "Insert the blades into the arm sections to detach the arms from the body, securing the compartments carefully to ensure the magic doesn’t dissipate."
Elizabeth’s eyes widened. "Blades again? Oh, this is getting more and more fun."
"Just relax," Daniel said, almost as if reassuring himself. "We’re following the instructions exactly."
He picked up the first blade, its cold steel feeling heavier in his grip this time, and aligned it with the slots at the shoulders, just beneath the small compartments where her arms fit snugly. Elizabeth shifted slightly, allowing him access, still watching him intently.
The blade slid smoothly through, and Daniel could feel a strange pulse ripple through the air—like a brief surge of energy just before it clicked into place.
Elizabeth's voice floated from inside the cabinet. "Okay, I can feel that... it’s almost like my arms are floating a little bit. But not quite attached... it's weird."
Daniel turned to Veronica, whose eyes were locked on the cabinet in sheer disbelief. "Alright, let’s do the other one."
With equal care, Daniel inserted the second blade into the corresponding compartment. A soft snick filled the room as it settled into place, and with a slight movement, both of Elizabeth's arms were now detached from the rest of the cabinet.
Elizabeth’s fingers twitched in the compartment, flexing as if testing the limits of her new freedom.
"Whoa," she said, voice filled with excitement. "I can feel my fingers... but they’re not on me. It’s like they’re just... floating next to me." She peered down at her body, her arms still secured in their compartments. "I can see my hands... right next to my face!"
Daniel carefully moved the arm compartments off the shelf and placed them gently next to Elizabeth's head. As soon as the boxes were close, Elizabeth’s eyes widened. The hands in the boxes were still moving, slowly twitching, as if she were still fully aware of them.
"Oh wow," Elizabeth said, grinning ear to ear. "This is crazy, Daniel. I can see my fingers moving, and it feels like... like they’re just hanging out next to me. This is the coolest thing ever."
Veronica, though still sceptical, couldn’t help but be intrigued. She leaned closer to examine the hands. "So, you can actually feel them moving, just... over there?" she asked, pointing at the compartment.
Elizabeth nodded, watching the hands with fascination. "Yeah, it’s like I have my own personal hover hands."
Daniel couldn’t help but chuckle at the absurdity of the situation. "Alright, we’re making progress.
Let’s finish the legs, then we can figure out how to put everything back together."
Elizabeth’s voice came from inside the cabinet. "I’m all for it. Let’s see if my legs can float next."
Veronica rubbed her forehead, muttering, "This is either the greatest magic trick ever, or we’re all going to end up in very different places."
Daniel took a deep breath as he read the next part of the instructions. His heart was beating faster now—not out of fear, but more out of sheer bewilderment at how flawlessly this was all unfolding. Despite the madness of the situation, he couldn’t help but feel like they were on the verge of something truly extraordinary.
Elizabeth’s voice, ever enthusiastic, broke his thoughts. "Alright, let's do this! I’m ready for the full body floating experience, Daniel!"
Veronica’s gaze flickered nervously between Elizabeth’s disembodied head and the cabinet, then to Daniel, who was slowly slipping the next blade from the table. "I still don’t know how you’re this calm about this, Daniel. I can’t even..."
Daniel gave her a quick, reassuring smile, though his palms were sweating. "The instructions say this part is the same as the arms. Just a few more blades and... we’ll be done."
"Just don’t lose my feet in the process," Elizabeth teased from her floating head.
Daniel let out a small chuckle before he focused back on the task at hand. He moved carefully to the leg compartments, aligning the first blade with the slot just below her waist. With a slow but confident motion, he slid it through, hearing the familiar click as it divided her legs from the body frame.
"Alright, one down," Daniel muttered, wiping his brow.
Elizabeth’s voice, full of excitement, filled the room. "I can feel it! My legs are totally separate now, but I can still feel them wiggling! This is the best feeling ever!"
Veronica, still sceptical but now visibly unnerved by the whole situation, glanced at the wiggling limbs, and then at Daniel. "You’re telling me that you don’t feel weird at all about this?"
Daniel didn’t respond at first. Instead, he gently lifted the leg compartments and placed them next to the arm boxes, stacking them neatly atop one another.
As he did, Elizabeth’s disembodied feet shifted slightly, wiggling in the air before her head, a curious and slightly eerie sight. The headless body on the frame remained completely still, but her hands and feet danced in the boxes like they were alive—like they were aware of their own movements, separate from her torso.
Veronica’s eyes went wide. "That’s... I mean, that’s impossible, right? You can see them moving, and—"
"I can feel them moving, too," Elizabeth interrupted, sounding genuinely thrilled. "I don’t know how, but it’s like my feet are dancing on their own. This is so much cooler than I imagined. You have to try this, Veronica."
Veronica shot her a disbelieving look. "Not in a million years."
Daniel, still processing the strangeness of it all, carefully turned the next page of the book, wondering what the next step was.
"Now, the final part," Daniel murmured. "It says... to reassemble the body in reverse order, starting with the feet."
Elizabeth's head tilted as she looked at her hands and feet, still wiggling independently. "Alright, well, when you're ready, Daniel. Let’s see if we can put all this back together!"
Daniel hesitated, his gaze flickering from the separate pieces of Elizabeth’s body to the book. He glanced back at her floating head and the still-moving arms and legs and couldn’t help but wonder how exactly the "reassembly" would work. Would it just be as easy as following the instructions? Or was there something... more to it?
It was a strange thought, but one that echoed in his mind as he carefully moved to begin the reassembly process.
Daniel’s eyes widened as he turned the page, his fingers trembling slightly. The book, as strange and cryptic as it had been, seemed to be leading them into deeper and more intricate territory with every turn. As he read aloud, Elizabeth's voice floated over from the cabinet.
“Bits? What is that supposed to mean?”
Veronica, still on edge, gave him a wary glance. “You really want to keep reading this thing? We’re already dealing with... parts of Elizabeth’s body all over the place.”
But Daniel was too captivated by the instructions to stop now. His curiosity was overriding everything else. He felt like he was on the edge of something extraordinary—or maybe something far more dangerous, but he couldn't help himself. The words seemed to pull him deeper.
“It says here that before reassembly, we can perform something called ‘Bits.’” Daniel's voice was tense with the weight of the unknown. “It’s a step where the limbs... disappear and we make them into pieces.”
Veronica’s eyebrows knitted in confusion. “Pieces of what? You’re telling me you’re going to—what? Cut her into bits?”
Elizabeth let out an exasperated breath, her head and arms still detached but completely composed. "Alright, I’m listening, Daniel. What do we do next? I feel like I’ve already experienced most of this... but I’m really curious about this ‘Bits’ thing. I’m in."
Daniel looked at the next set of instructions, his stomach fluttering with a strange mixture of anticipation and apprehension.
"Insert the special blades into the boxes containing the arms and legs. This will detach the hands and feet from their respective limbs, and they will become separate bits of the assistant's body, floating in the magical space."
Elizabeth's voice came from inside the cabinet. "So. you mean I’m about to become a bunch of floating parts? This should be fun."
Daniel reached for the new set of blades, which were thinner and seemed more delicate than the others they’d used. He carefully slid them into the slots at the base of Elizabeth's arm compartments—just below the wrists. The blade slid in with a quiet click, and as he did, Elizabeth’s hands, still moving in their box, gave a brief twitch.
The sensation felt oddly satisfying, like the blades were unlocking a new, unexplored layer of the trick.
Elizabeth looked down at the boxes. “Whoa. I can feel it... My hands are separating from my arms now, aren’t they? This is insane.”
Daniel, focused entirely on the instructions, slid the second blade into the leg compartment. As he did, he could almost sense the subtle shift of energy—the air seemed to hum louder around them.
One by one, the blades detached Elizabeth’s hands and feet from the arm and leg boxes. The hands, still floating in their separate compartments, twitched again, now fully independent of the rest of her body. Her feet, likewise, began to wiggle on their own in the boxes. There was something unnerving about seeing them so separate, moving as if still attached to her mind, but detached from the physical body.
