Chapter four. One becomes two, two become one

Chapter three. Restoration of a Lady.

Daniel flipped through the book again, his fingers tracing the faded ink. “Okay… this version of the trick was never completed, but it’s supposed to use two cabinets instead of one. Something about—” His brows furrowed as he read aloud.

"A seamless exchange, a mirrored illusion. One becomes two, two become one."

Veronica crossed her arms. “That sounds ominous.”

Elizabeth, however, was already circling the second cabinet, eyes shining with curiosity. “Come on, we have to try it! This one’s designed differently… maybe it does something even better than the first one.”

Daniel hesitated. “We don’t even know how it works yet.”

Elizabeth gave him a playful nudge. “That’s never stopped us before.”

Veronica rolled her eyes. “You literally just got cut into pieces and put back together. Maybe slow down?”

But Elizabeth was undeterred. She gestured to the second cabinet. “Fine. If you’re so worried, why don’t we do it together? One of us in each box. That way, if something weird happens, we’ll both know.”

Daniel and Veronica exchanged a look.

Daniel sighed. “Alright, alright. But we follow the instructions exactly this time.”

Elizabeth grinned. “Deal.”

She stepped into the first cabinet while Veronica, muttering under her breath, climbed into the second. Daniel carefully followed the book’s instructions, closing the doors and securing the locks.

Then came the blades.

One by one, Daniel inserted them just like before. First at the legs. Then the torso. Then the neck.

Elizabeth, having been through this once, only shivered at the strange tingling sensation. Veronica, however, sucked in a breath as the magic took hold.

“Okay, that’s deeply unsettling,” she murmured.

Daniel read on. “Now… the middle sections of each cabinet are supposed to slide out…”

He hesitated.

Then, with a deep breath, he followed the instructions.

The middle sections of both cabinets slid free—and then, impossibly, he moved them across to the opposite cabinet.

A pulse of energy crackled through the air.

Daniel’s hands shook as he secured the sections in their new positions. He turned to the book.

“Okay, next it says… open the doors.”

He swallowed hard and did as instruct.

Inside the cabinets, the top and bottom halves of Elizabeth and Veronica had swapped places.

Elizabeth’s head and hands now rested on Veronica’s legs and feet. Veronica’s head and hands were now on Elizabeth’s lower half.

Both women stared at each other in stunned silence.

Elizabeth wiggled her new toes experimentally. “Oh my God.”

Veronica blinked, then slowly raised her hands—Elizabeth’s hands—to her face.

“…Oh, hell no.”

Daniel, speechless, looked between them, then back to the book. The next line read:

"To restore, reverse the steps."

He looked up at them and gave a sheepish chuckle.

“Uh. So… should I fix this now, or…?”

Elizabeth, grinning like a kid at Christmas, shook her head. “Not yet.” She turned to Veronica with a wicked smile.

“Let’s see what we can do like this first.”

Elizabeth grinned, wiggling her fingers—Veronica’s fingers—before flexing her new legs. She took an experimental step, stumbling slightly as she adjusted to the different proportions.

“Oh wow,” she breathed, testing her balance. “This is so weird.”

Veronica, on the other hand, was frozen, her hands still raised in front of her face as if she couldn’t believe what she was seeing.

Daniel took a step closer. “Uh… you, okay?”

Veronica inhaled deeply through her nose. “Okay? Okay? Daniel, I’m currently sitting in a cabinet with Elizabeth’s legs, and she’s walking around with mine—no, I’m not okay!”

Elizabeth, undeterred, took another wobbly step, then another. “You know, your legs are really strong. I feel like I could run a marathon!”

Veronica scowled. “Well, I feel like I just woke up in the wrong body.”

Elizabeth turned to her with an impish grin. “Technically, you did.”

Daniel rubbed his temples. “Okay, this is getting out of hand. Let’s just swap you two back before—”

Elizabeth suddenly gasped. “Wait! We have to test something first!”

Before anyone could stop her, she tried to twirl—only to nearly tip over. “Whoa, okay, balance is different.”

Daniel caught her before she fell. “Yeah, because they’re not your legs!”

Elizabeth was already laughing. “No, but this is fascinating! It’s like my brain knows how to move, but my body is reacting differently.”

Veronica groaned, shifting in her cabinet. “Elizabeth, can we not treat this like some kind of science experiment?”

Elizabeth smirked. “But it is a science experiment! A real cool one.”

Daniel sighed. “Look, let’s just—”

Before he could finish, Elizabeth lifted herself onto the balls of Veronica’s feet… and then attempted a high kick.

It was a mistake.

Veronica yelled as the sudden motion sent an unfamiliar jolt through her detached lower half.

“What the hell, Elizabeth?!”

Elizabeth winced, wobbling. “Okay, that felt weird. Did you—”

“Yes, I felt that!” Veronica snapped.

Daniel’s eyes widened. “Wait. So, you’re still connected somehow?”

Veronica exhaled sharply. “Apparently!”

Elizabeth’s face lit up. “That means if I move your legs, you feel it?”

Veronica pointed at her, furious. “Do not test that theory!”

Elizabeth, ever the troublemaker, wiggled her toes.

Veronica shrieked.

Daniel pinched the bridge of his nose. “Elizabeth.”

Elizabeth folded her arms, pouting. “Oh, come on. When else are we going to experience something like this?”

Daniel shook his head. “We’re done. I’m swapping you two back before this gets any weirder.”

Elizabeth sighed dramatically. “Fine. But this was so worth it.”

Veronica shot her a glare. “Speak for yourself.”

Daniel followed the instructions in reverse, carefully sliding the middle sections back into place. The moment the final lock clicked; a rush of energy crackled through the air.

A heartbeat later, the cabinet doors swung open…

And both Elizabeth and Veronica were back to normal.

Elizabeth immediately checked herself over, wiggling her own fingers and stretching her own legs. “Wow. That was incredible.”

Veronica, pale and shaken, slowly stepped out of her cabinet. “We are never doing that again.”

Elizabeth shot her a mischievous grin. “Oh, come on. Maybe next time, we could—”

“There will be no next time!”

Daniel, still holding the book, sighed. “I have a feeling that’s not true.”

Elizabeth turned to him, beaming. “So, what’s the next trick?”
