Luna got herself ready after waking up, her metal cuffs and collar now shrinking to their normal discrete size. She washed, put on her clothes and leather armour, and looked in the mirror. She was impressed with how she looked, but a small voice in the back of her mind whispered that she was just pretending to be someone she's not. She pushed the thought aside and took out her weapons, suiting up and taking a step outside.
The village was abuzz with talk of a stranger that came into the village last night, some saying he was a dwarf, others saying he was a wizard. Walking past the chapel, one of the other Rangers came over to her, asking her to come to the tavern straight away. Luna quickened her pace, wondering what this was about. She opened the door to see Aurik drinking with a dwarf, his hair and beard white and tied up in braids. His robes were blue and red, with lots of intricate symbols sewn in with gold thread, and a staff was standing still by the dwarf. Luna then noticed his eyes were golden.
Both the dwarf and Aurik were laughing and telling tales from their experiences when Aurik noticed Luna. "Professor Thalgrum Ironquill, may I have the pleasure to introduce you to Luna Moonshadow, she was the recent devotee to the Demon Magnus something or other."
Aurik took a pause and breathed in, there was a lot to come out. Luna felt a surge of anxiety, wondering what Aurik was going to say about her. She hoped he wouldn't reveal too much about her deal with Magnus.
"Luna, it is my eternal pleasure to introduce you to Professor Thalgrum Ironquill, Vice Chancellor of the College of Contracts, Grand Arbiter of Planar Concords, Keeper of the Stalwart Accord, and Warden of Elemental Harmony."
Thalgrum looked up at Luna, held out his hand, and shook her hand with a mighty grip. Luna was taken aback by the firm handshake, but she tried to hide it. "Luna Moonshadow, aye, I read your contract, standard fare for an evil thing as your... man." Luna felt a flush rise to her cheeks as she wondered what Thalgrum meant by "standard fare." Did he think she was just a typical demon worshipper?
"Thank you, er, Sir?" Luna replied, trying to sound confident. Thalgrum laughed, a deep gruff chuckle. "Aye, a confident young lady you said Aurik." Aurik squinted at Thalgrum, "Oh Professor, I know what you're like, your presence is felt in 3 dimensions, poor Luna here is in awe of you; plus she's probably had a reminder of who is her Master last night."
Luna's blush deepened as she thought about the previous night's events. She had indeed felt Magnus's presence, and it had left her feeling both excited and terrified. She wondered if Thalgrum and Aurik knew more about her deal than they were letting on.
Aurik and Thalgrum stood up and got closer to Luna, Aurik speaking first. "Luna, whenever a Warlock makes an agreement with another body, person or organization, whatever, their patron will make a mark to point out who is the Warlock's true patron. The college has many experiences from Warlocks like yourself." Luna's mind racing, she thought about the strange symbol on her hand. She had wondered what it meant, and now she was about to find out.
Thalgrum nodded in agreement, his golden eyes glinting with a knowing light. "Aye, the mark of the patron is a subtle but powerful indicator of the Warlock's true allegiance. In your case, Luna, the mark is quite... prominent, I'm told." Luna felt a surge of embarrassment, wondering what Thalgrum meant by "prominent." Did he think she was somehow... tainted by her deal with Magnus?
As Thalgrum and Aurik continued to explain the implications of her contract, Luna listened intently, trying to absorb as much information as possible. She was determined to understand her situation and make the most of it. When Thalgrum asked her to accompany them to the castle, Luna agreed, feeling a sense of excitement and trepidation. What would they find at the castle? And what did Thalgrum mean by "developing herself" to avoid being sent back to the abyss?
The three of them set off towards the castle, Luna walking alongside Thalgrum and Aurik. As they walked, Thalgrum asked her to tell him more about the local area, to give him the "flavour of the land." Luna thought for a moment, trying to gather her thoughts. She began to describe the village, the people, and the surrounding landscape.
As they walked, Luna continued to describe the local area, sharing stories and anecdotes about the villagers and the land. Thalgrum listened intently, nodding his head and asking occasional questions. Luna found herself feeling more at ease, enjoying the opportunity to share her knowledge and insights with the professor.
As they approached the castle, Luna's thoughts turned to the strange occurrences that had been happening in the area. She wondered if Thalgrum's examination of the castle would reveal any clues about the source of the disturbances. She felt a shiver run down her spine as she thought about the possibility of dark forces at work in the area.
Upon arriving at the castle, Thalgrum began his examination, using various tools and instruments to scan the area. Luna watched with interest, trying to understand what he was doing. Aurik explained that Thalgrum was checking for any signs of demonic energy or other supernatural phenomena.
As Thalgrum worked, Luna couldn't help but think about her own role in the situation. She was a Warlock, bound to a demon, and she wondered if she was somehow connected to the strange happenings in the area. She felt a pang of guilt and uncertainty, wondering if she was doing the right thing by working with Thalgrum and Aurik.
After Thalgrum finished his examination, they gathered in the courtyard to discuss their findings. Thalgrum pulled out a large map of the area, pointing out various symbols and markings. Luna leaned in, trying to understand what they meant.
"So, Professor, what did you find?" she asked, trying to sound confident.
Thalgrum looked up at her, his golden eyes glinting with intensity. "The castle is indeed a nexus of dark energy, Luna. I believe it's connected to your... patron, Magnus."
Luna felt a surge of surprise and curiosity. "What do you mean?"
Thalgrum leaned forward, his voice taking on a conspiratorial tone. "I think Magnus is trying to expand his influence in this world, Luna. And you, as his Warlock, are a key part of that plan."
Luna's mind reeled as she tried to process this information. She had never thought about her role in Magnus's plans, and the idea that she was a key part of his strategy was both exhilarating and terrifying.
As they continued to discuss their findings, Luna couldn't help but wonder what lay ahead. She was caught up in a world of magic and politics, and she wasn't sure if she was ready for what was to come. But she was determined to learn, to grow, and to make the most of her situation.
As the sun began to set, Thalgrum suggested they head back to the village for dinner. Luna agreed, feeling a sense of relief wash over her. She was hungry, and she needed time to process everything she had learned.
As they walked back to the village, Luna's thoughts turned to the future. She knew that she had a long and difficult road ahead of her, but she was ready to face whatever challenges came her way. She was a Warlock, bound to a demon, and she was determined to make the most of it.
When they arrived at the tavern, Thalgrum pulled out a large, ornate box from his bag. "I think it's time we had a proper dinner, don't you, Luna?" he said, a twinkle in his eye.
Luna's eyes widened as Thalgrum opened the box, revealing a sumptuous feast. There were roasted meats, steaming vegetables, and all manner of delicacies. Luna's stomach growled in anticipation as Thalgrum began to serve the food.
As they ate, Luna felt a sense of wonder and gratitude. She had never experienced such luxury and hospitality before, and she was determined to enjoy every moment of it.
As they ate, Thalgrum turned to Luna and said, "You know, my dear, I've been thinking about your situation. As a Warlock, you have a certain... flexibility, shall we say, that can be quite useful in our line of work."
Luna looked at him curiously, wondering what he meant. "What do you mean, Professor?"
Thalgrum leaned back in his chair, a faraway look in his eye. "Well, you see, Luna, the College of Contracts is not just a simple institution for teaching magic and diplomacy. We are also a hub for... shall we say, 'diplomatic' relations between the mortal world and the various realms of the multiverse."
Aurik nodded in agreement. "Yes, and as a Warlock, Luna, you have a unique perspective on the workings of the multiverse. Your... patron, Magnus, is a powerful entity, and your connection to him gives you a certain degree of influence and access to resources that might not be available to others."
Luna's eyes widened as she began to understand the implications. "You mean, I could be a kind of... ambassador, or something?"
Thalgrum chuckled. "Ah, not exactly, my dear. But you could certainly be a valuable asset in our dealings with the various powers of the multiverse. And, of course, we would be happy to provide you with training and support to help you navigate the complexities of your role."
As they continued to eat and talk, Luna found herself feeling more and more at ease with Thalgrum and Aurik. They seemed to be genuinely interested in helping her, and she began to feel a sense of hope that she had not felt in a long time.
But as the night wore on, Thalgrum's conversation turned to more serious topics. "Luna, I must warn you, the road ahead will not be easy. There are those who would seek to use you for their own purposes, and you must be careful to avoid their influence."
Luna felt a shiver run down her spine as she listened to Thalgrum's words. She knew that she was taking a risk by getting involved with the College of Contracts, but she was determined to see it through.
"What kind of people are we talking about, Professor?" she asked, trying to keep her voice steady.
Thalgrum's expression turned grave. "There are many who would seek to exploit your connection to Magnus for their own gain. The cultists, for example, would love to get their hands on you. And then, of course, there are the agents of the various powers of the multiverse, who would seek to use you as a pawn in their games of power and intrigue."
Luna felt a surge of fear at the thought of being used as a pawn in some larger game. But she steeled herself, determined to face whatever challenges lay ahead.
"I'm not afraid, Professor," she said, trying to sound brave. "I'm ready to do whatever it takes to protect myself and those I care about."
Thalgrum nodded, a small smile playing on his lips.
Thalgrum leaned forward, his eyes glinting with a serious light. "You see, Luna, the problem with demon worship is that it's often a one-way street. The demon gets what it wants, and the worshipper gets... well, not much, usually."
Luna felt a shiver run down her spine as she listened to Thalgrum's words. She had always known that making a deal with a demon was a risky business, but she had never really thought about the long-term consequences.
"What happens to them, Professor?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
Thalgrum's expression turned grim. "Ah, the fate of the demon worshippers. Well, it's not a pretty one, I'm afraid. You see, when a mortal makes a deal with a demon, they're essentially trading their soul for power or knowledge or whatever it is they desire. But the demon doesn't just take their soul, it takes their autonomy, their free will. They become a puppet, a plaything for the demon to use and discard at its whim."
Luna felt a surge of horror at the thought. She had never realized that making a deal with a demon could be so... irreversible. She thought about her own deal with Magnus, and wondered if she had made a terrible mistake.
"And what about the ones who think they can outsmart the demons?" she asked, her mind racing with thoughts of all the stories she had heard about demon worshippers who thought they could cheat their way to power.
Thalgrum chuckled, a dry, mirthless sound. "Ah, those ones are the worst off of all. They think they can play the demons at their own game, but they're just pawns, Luna. The demons have been playing this game for eons, and they always come out on top. The worshippers might get a few fleeting moments of power or pleasure, but in the end, they're just fuel for the demon's fires."
Luna felt a cold dread creeping up her spine as she listened to Thalgrum's words. She thought about all the stories she had heard about the hells, the pits of suffering and torment where the damned souls of the unwary were sent to suffer for eternity. She had always thought of them as just stories, but now she realized that they might be all too real.
"What about the ones who think they'll get to live in the demon's harem, or whatever it is they promise?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
Thalgrum's expression turned contemptuous. "Ah, those ones are the most deluded of all. They think that by serving the demon, they'll get to live a life of luxury and pleasure, but the truth is, they'll be nothing more than slaves, forced to do the demon's bidding for eternity. And even that's not the worst of it, Luna. The worst is what happens to them after they die."
Luna felt a surge of fear at the thought. She had always known that making a deal with a demon was a risk, but she had never realized just how great the risk was.
"What happens to them, Professor?" she asked, her voice shaking slightly.
Thalgrum's eyes glinted with a serious light. "They become... less than nothing, Luna. They become the maggots, the flies, the worms that crawl through the filth and the mire of the hells. They're forced to suffer and torment for eternity, with no hope of escape or respite. And the worst part is, they're not even aware of what's happening to them. They're just... gone, consumed by the demon's power and forgotten."
Luna felt a wave of horror wash over her as she listened to Thalgrum's words. She realized that she had been blind to the true nature of the demons and their power. She had thought that making a deal with Magnus was a way to gain power and knowledge, but now she saw it for what it was: a desperate gamble with her very soul.
As she sat there, listening to Thalgrum's words, Luna felt a sense of determination rising up within her. She was going to make the most of her deal with Magnus, no matter what the cost. She was going to learn everything she could, and use that knowledge to protect herself and those she cared about. And she was going to make sure that she never ended up like the poor, deluded souls who thought they could outsmart the demons.
Thalgrum's eyes locked onto Luna's, and he could see the worry etched on her face. He leaned forward, his voice taking on a more serious tone.
"Luna, I can see that you're concerned about what I've told you. And rightly so. The fate of those who make deals with demons is not a pleasant one. But I must tell you, after reading your contract with Magnus, I believe you will be... differently situated, shall we say."
Luna's eyes narrowed, unsure of what Thalgrum meant. "What do you mean, Professor?" she asked, her voice cautious.
Thalgrum leaned back in his chair, a small smile playing on his lips. "I mean, Luna, that you will indeed be in the harem of Magnus. But the question is, where will you be when the time comes? Will you be one of the favored few, or will you be cast aside like so many others?"
Luna's face paled, and Thalgrum could see the fear rising up in her eyes. He leaned forward again, his voice taking on a more reassuring tone.
"Do not worry, Luna. I am not saying that you will be doomed to suffer the same fate as those who have come before you. But I am saying that you must be careful, and you must be prepared. You have a unique opportunity, one that few others have. You have the chance to navigate the complexities of the demonic realm, and to come out on top."
Luna's eyes locked onto Thalgrum's, and he could see the determination rising up in her. She was a strong one, this Luna. She would not go quietly into the night.
"What do I need to do, Professor?" she asked, her voice firm.
Thalgrum smiled, a small, wry smile. "Ah, my dear Luna. You need to learn, and you need to learn quickly. You need to understand the intricacies of the demonic realm, and you need to be prepared to make difficult choices. But most of all, you need to be prepared to face yourself, and to confront the darkness that lies within."
Luna's eyes narrowed, and Thalgrum could see the steel rising up in her. She was a warrior, this one. She would not back down from a fight.
"I'm ready, Professor," she said, her voice firm. "I'm ready to learn, and I'm ready to face whatever comes my way."
Thalgrum nodded, a small smile playing on his lips. "I thought you might be, Luna. I thought you might be."
Thalgrum leaned forward, his eyes glinting with a serious light. "Luna, you have a spark within you, a spark that can be fanned into a flame. But to do that, you need to take challenges, gain experiences, and push yourself to your limits. You can't just sit back and wait for things to happen, you need to make them happen."
Luna nodded, her mind racing with the implications of Thalgrum's words. She knew that she had been given a great gift by Magnus, a piece of himself that allowed her to wield magic. But she also knew that she couldn't just rest on that gift, she needed to make it grow.
"That's right, Luna," Thalgrum said, as if reading her thoughts. "The piece of Magnus that you have been given is just a starting point. It's up to you to nurture it, to grow it, and to make it a part of you. And to do that, you need to challenge yourself, to push yourself to your limits, and to see what you're truly capable of."
Luna felt a surge of determination rise up within her. She was ready to take on the challenge, to push herself to her limits, and to see what she was truly capable of.
Thalgrum smiled, a small, wry smile. "I thought you might be, Luna. And to help you get started, I have a little challenge for you. You see, I have a bottle of Dwarven whisky here, and I challenge you to drink a shot of it."
Luna's eyes widened in surprise. She had heard of Dwarven whisky, it was legendary for its strength and its ability to knock even the toughest warriors off their feet. She wasn't sure if she was ready for that kind of challenge, but she was determined to try.
"Okay, Professor," she said, her voice firm. "I'll do it."
Thalgrum grinned, a mischievous glint in his eye. "Ah, I thought you might be up for it, Luna. But don't say I didn't warn you. Dwarven whisky is not for the faint of heart. The malts are heated in a volcano, "
Luna nodded, her heart pounding in her chest. She was ready to take on the challenge, to push herself to her limits, and to see what she was truly capable of. She reached out, took the shot glass from Thalgrum, and downed the whisky in one swift motion.
The room seemed to spin around her, and she felt a wave of heat wash over her. She gasped, her eyes watering, and her throat burning. But she refused to back down, she refused to give in. She was determined to rise to the challenge, to push herself to her limits, and to see what she was truly capable of.
Thalgrum laughed, a deep, rumbling laugh. "Ah, Luna, you are indeed a warrior. I think you'll do just fine in the world of magic and demons."
