Raven opened her eyes. Though disoriented and uneasy, the indigo clad Teen Titan simply took a deep breath and let her years of meditative training take over. Within a few seconds, the disorientation passed and the uneasiness rescinded back to the depths of her mind, where it could act as a warning of danger, but not negatively influence her decisions and actions.
Now calm, the young superheroine took in her situation: She sat in an armchair. Her hood was down around her neck, but she still wore her cloak and leotard. She did not have on her gloves or boots. Miniature whirling dust devils bound her wrists and ankles to the arms and legs of the chair. Her bare feet only just touched the plushly carpeted floor when she pointed her toes. An overhead fixture lit the room to just above twilight levels. She could see no other furniture or objects.
Then she heard almost imperceptible footfalls behind her. The soft carpeting mostly masked them, but as she focused on the half sounds, she surmised that their owner was slender, female, and barefoot. That realization, along with her elemental bindings, told her what she needed to know.
“What are you up to this time, Jinx?” she said.
The footsteps moved up behind Raven, then around to her front. Revealed now to indeed be the bald but beautiful villainess, Jinx smiled down at her captive.
“What impressive intuition you have, my darling,” she said.
“I’m not your darling,” Raven said. “Now tell me what you’re up to.”
“What am I up to? Oh, nothing much. Just planning a little...mind control.”
“Mind control? On me?”
“Yes, of course.”
“Really? That’s your game? Good luck with that.”
Jinx giggled at the indignance of her captive. Only a Teen Titan could be so bold when in such a precarious position.
“I don’t need luck, darling,” Jinx said, emphasizing the last word. “Very soon, you will serve and obey me as a devoted thrall.”
“You’ll definitely need luck and a whole lot more to break through my psychic defenses,” Raven said in a cool and wholly unbothered tone.
“The probability of my success in breaking through those vaunted defenses is low, yes--”
“Infinitesimally low.”
“--But then, probability is mine to command.”
The uneasiness in the back of Raven’s mind flared, and she knew not to ignore it. She remembered that in addition to Jinx’s powerful elemental magic, she could indeed influence probability. But could the villainess use that power in such a way to take control of someone’s mind?
As if in answer to Raven’s unspoken question, Jinx pulled an object from the sash around her loincloth. With a crocodile grin she raised her hand up over and in front of her captive’s head. She then loosened her grip on the object just enough to let it slip through her fingers.
A silver pocket watch fell downward out of Jinx’s hand, then stopped when it reached the end of a length of chain that she still grasped.
Instantly making the connection between swinging watch and hypnosis, Raven stared at the object incredulously. Did Jinx really think she could use such a simple method to ensnare the mind of one of the most powerful psychics in the world? Perhaps coincidentally, or perhaps with true insight into the heroine’s thoughts, Jinx responded to this second unsaid question.
“The probability of me hypnotizing you is all but nil. And yet, what if I make it so the probability of it is all but certain?”
She began gently swinging the watch back and forth. And suddenly, Raven found her entire attention focused on it. Almost like a special effect in a movie, everything else in the room receded from her view, while the rhythmic swinging of the watch grew larger and sharper within her field of vision.
Additionally, the watch began generating concentric, spiraling waves that caused an intense nausea within Raven when she looked at them. She could even see them when she closed her eyes. The only relief for her was to focus on the watch, to focus on its calming, soothing, captivating motion.
It didn’t take long for the swinging watch to lull Raven into a relaxed state. And from that relaxed state, she progressed towards a comfortable sleepiness.
“That’s a good girl, my darling,” Jinx said. “Close your eyes now. Close your eyes and sleep. Let yourself drift into my hypnotic trance. Open your mind to me. Open your mind to my control. Obey me. Serve me. Be my slave.”
Raven’s eyes were now closed, and she breathed lightly and evenly. Jinx put the pocket watch away and stepped back from her captive. She slowly walked around the chair, marveling at the sight of the hypnotized superheroine before her.
“Can you hear me, Raven?” she asked tentatively.
“Yes,” Raven said in a slow, sleepy voice.
“You will address me as Mistress.”
“Yes, Mistress.”
“Are you ready to obey me?”
“Yes, Mistress.”
“Are you ready to serve me?”
“Yes, Mistress.”
“Are you willing to be my slave?”
“Yes, Mistress. What would you have me do?”
Jinx’s smile almost devoured her face.
“I want you to send word to your teammate, the lovely alien girl.”
“Starfire?”
“Yes, her. I want you to bring her here. But just her. I don’t want any of your other teammates to come. Can you do that? Can you get her to come alone?”
“Yes, Mistress.”
“Good. Then, I want you to use your powers to hypnotize her. You can telepathically broadcast the image of the swinging watch to her, and then use your empathy to force the feelings you had of relaxation, sleepiness, and submissiveness into her mind.”
“Yes, Mistress.”
“Once she is hypnotized, you will brainwash her into serving and obeying me, as you do. When you have finished, I want you to let me know that she is safely under my control, as you are. Until then, I will remain out of sight.”
“Yes, Mistress.”
“Contact her now. Then let me know when she is on her way.”
“Yes, Mistress.”
With that, Jinx waved her hands. The dust devils that had secured Raven to the chair evaporated. Then Raven pulled out her Teen Titans communicator from her belt and sent a private message to Starfire. The two heroines corresponded back and forth for a couple of minutes, and then Raven put the device away.
“Well?” Jinx asked.
“Starfire will be here in the next few minutes, Mistress. She thinks that I want to show her something related to a case that we worked on together a few months ago.”
“Good. Oh, and as part of her brainwashing, have her remove her boots. I want both my slaves to go barefoot while serving me.”
“Yes, Mistress.”
With a nod, the villainess slipped away into the shadows.
A few minutes later, Starfire arrived. She found Raven in the dimly lit room with no furniture but an armchair. Immediately, her guard went up.
“Are you okay, Raven?” she asked her friend. “What’s going on?”
“I’m fine, Starfire,” Raven said. “Nothing’s going on. I just want to show you something.”
“Then why is it so dark in here? And why is there only one piece of furniture in this room? And why are you barefoot? Where are your boots?”
“My boots? Oh, I took them off when I came in here. This carpet looked so amazingly plush, I just had to see how soft it was. And believe me, it’s really soft and comfy.”
“Um, okay. That’s great. What about the lighting and the one chair?”
Raven could tell that her friend was suspicious. She had to act now, or she might not get a chance to carry out her Mistress’s instructions.
“Don’t worry about any of that, Starfire,” she said. “Let me show you what I need to show you.”
“Fine you can show me, but--”
Before she could finish speaking, Starfire suddenly saw a swinging pocket watch surrounded by concentric spiraling waves. The waves made her dizzy, and they appeared even behind her eyelids when she closed them to block out the vision. In order to maintain her balance, she had to focus on the watch. But no sooner did she do that, then its rhythmic swaying began to entrance her.
“Raven,” she said nervously. “What’s happening? What are...you doing...to me?”
Then she heard Jinx’s words in her mind, telling her to close her eyes...to drift...to be hypnotized...to obey...to serve...to be the wizardess’s slave. Under Raven’s telepathic assault, she could not resist the suggestions. She closed her eyes. She fell deep into a trance. And she obeyed the instructions she was given.
From an adjacent room, Jinx heard Raven call out that Starfire was hypnotized and ready to obey her Mistress. Jinx cautiously reentered the room to see the alien princess standing there, barefoot and brainwashed, just like her half-demonic teammate.
“Excellent,” Jinx said with gleefully malicious delight. “Now my fun can truly begin….”
