My name is Sophia, and I am a medical researcher and zoologist. My main subject of research has been the potential of spinal cord regrowth, which would help many people around the world who are paralysed to gain full control of their body. Another potential use has been the possibility of head transplant, which would then be possible due to the spinal cord being able to reconnect back and function as if no transplant has ever happened. I have been making this thing come closer to reality with each day by replacing heads of animals with machines. That is correct, it might seem like it should have been backwards, with me first making sure that neutrons connect, and then try to make a machine that replaces the brain itself. The reason why I am first replacing the neurones before connecting them is because connecting tiny organic wires smaller then a single cell is as you would have guessed, pretty difficult task to do, especially if you are not connecting them yourself, but instead you are just pouring different chemicals on them and changing their environment so that they regrow themselves. So if you try to just organically glue them together, you would end up with mess that redirects different impulses to wrong nerves and so on. Basically, it is near impossible.
But what is not impossible is connecting artificial neutrons to the cut axons and then try to control the activities of the neutrons with a computer. You could then do that both with the head and the body to know which impulses work for which action and then just connect them digitally. Now, you might think that programming a computer that takes care of all the passive function of living animal body would be impossible, but you are wrong. It would be impossible for a human to achieve such achievement, but for self learning AI, it is not a problem. To train the AI, all I gotta do is connect it to the axons in the spinal cord, and then let the AI see what brain sends and receives, and try to predict that. Because I am not interested in recreating animal behaviour, but only interested in creating machine that can make sure the body functions are working, I only activate the computer whenever the animal is either idle or sleeping, and then for a brief moment use different AI to catalogue all the nerve impulses used to move certain parts of the body.
This way I was able to create a headless mice that has been living without a head for almost 2 months now. After this successful trial I then tried the same thing now on lab monkeys to make a model that works on animals closer to human then rodents are. This trial was also successful, but unfortunately I was not able to continue researching on monkeys due to protests of animal rights. But from the experiments I conducted, I found out that for the most part, the same algorithm can be applied to both monkeys and rodents, just with very little changes and something like 5 minutes of connecting the wires with the spinal cord so that the program will eventually find out which axon is which.
Most of these experiments were conducted at my house which I share with Caroline, a student majoring in engineering that helped me setup the AIs. I am 34 years old and she is 27, and both of us are quite nerdy and socially awkward. None of us were ever desired by our piers, but we do not care. Unfortunately we are going to get a new roommate that will share our house. Her name is Katie, and as far as we know, she is pretty young and let’s say not into things that we are into.
We heard the bell ring, she came right in. Unlike us who had very little in women assets and quite wider waists, she had big curves with tiny waist. She looked 24, had hourglass figure and was also taller then both of us. We were quite intimidated by her figure, but then she started talking and we instantly gained our confidence. Her speech did not sound very intelligent, which became more clear with every second she spoke. When she went around the house, she kept asking what was our lab equipment for, which we always answered with simplified version of our research. Even though we told her almost 5 times we do experiments with animals and AI, she never seemed to understand it and kept asking about if it really involved animals and other dumb questions. She decided she had enough of it, and that she will leave this house after she makes herself a snack in our kitchen. As she picked up some knife and a board, she started cutting a bell pepper. The whole kitchen was in mess of random tools, except for one spot above knife magnet. She did not notice that magnet and due to her height, she had to hunch over more then we do when cutting vegetable. As she was cutting the vegetables, one long knife was about to fall on her. Her fast movements of arm vibrated the clunky kitchen table and caused the longest knife to fall on her neck, stabbing her vein and piercing the cheap furniture, which made her stuck in place unable to move from the spot. We heard what happened and rushed towards the kitchen to only see her struggling and causing another knife to pierce her neck.
Both me and Caroline were very focused on the situation and made sure to help her out. We knew that her spinal cord has been damaged and that we have certain technology in our house to help her, so instead of spending 2 minutes pulling 2 huge knifes out of the desk that were stuck there pretty deep, we decided to amputate the head of the poor girl and see where it goes from there, since we have technology that could save her more likely then her not bleeding out. Once I cut off the rest of the neck, her body slammed herself on the other side of the kitchen. Caroline quickly pressed the artery on the neck stump to slow down the bleeding, while I picked up the head and put her into the freezer. I experimented with heads a lot, so my extra cold freezer specialised for heads was enough to keep the head in a state of unconscious living, while we make sure the body keeps working. As I closed the freezer, Caroline told me to hurry up. To stop the bleeding, I needed to patch the wound by strangling her neck, but the problem is that in this case I also need to make sure that she still has the ability to breathe trough her cut throat. To do this, I picked up cutting pillars and cut off piece of our tap to work as solid pipe to allow breathing of the throat. I managed to stop the bleeding and keep the throat open with the tiny piece of tap stuck there. As I tied the string around her neck to make it stay, her body went into a spasm and punched me multiple times. Caroline was needed in order for us to take the body down while she was having her last moments of her heart beating without brain intervention. Her head was dormant and in the freezer to slow down the metabolism and give us more time. To keep the head alive, we quickly picked up a pump that works like a small heart just for her head and pumps blood so that the blood circulates, and then also have smaller pump used to slowly pump air into the bigger pump and mix with the blood. This was not optimal, but temporarily it worked. We now went back to the body, now calm, but losing her heartbeat. We did heart massage and picked up the artificial brain of one of the monkeys. The computer AI on the neck plate was only able to keep the body functions working, and provided no cognitive abilities. The body started to work normally again and we both went to sleep, with the body strapped to our couch of course to make sure nothing happens to her, just in case.
