The Haunting 4; Voices in the Air

I have placed a couple of really obscure hints as to where I drew inspiration for this story from.  Any guesses?

Carlie stood at the top of the stairs, still not sure why she couldn’t do it.  After her clothes disappeared, she’d hoped they’d be downstairs, but, as Nicky stated, at least she’d have what was in the laundry already.

She never felt safe in the basement, not ever.  She always felt like something was hiding in one of the shadows, even felt like there was something down there.

But she needed clothes, and, as Nicky said, they were in the basement.

She clicked the light on, taking a big gulp of air and rushed downstairs.

As she looked around, she could see that, yes, her laundry pile hadn’t changed size.  Still, she had to get clothes.  She tried not to think about it as she started the laundry up.

 “Are you there?”

The voice came out of nowhere.  Carlie’s eyes darted around the basement, trying to spot the guy who belonged to that voice. “Carlie, are you there?”

She wanted to run, but also needed to know. “Yeah.  Who are you?”

The voice took a moment, almost as if it was waiting for her. “Why are you still here?”

Carlie felt her fear tamp down at that as she decided she needed to lay a claim. “This is my house!  Why are you here!”

Almost a full minute later, the voice came back. “What happened in the fire?”

That struck her as odd.  Didn’t whatever this thing was already know? “It got put out.”

As Carlie got her things going, another voice came back, a female this time. “Why’re you in pieces?”

Two?  What did they mean?  Didn’t they know about otherworldly stuff? “Magic of course.  You know my parents used real magic.”

No more questions.  Nothing more, but Carlie felt her ire rising up. “Now give me back my clothes.  Give me back the saw and stop screwing around with me.  Get out of my house.”

With that in place, Carlie hurried back upstairs.  She would take Nicky when she went to put the clothes in the dryer, just in case it happened again.

For the rest of the day, even as Carlie finished her laundry, nothing else inexplicable happened.  Instead, Carlie started to look online, trying to figure out what had gotten into her home.

As dinner time came, Carlie got everything ready. “Nicky, dinner!”

Nicky came in as Carlie sat the table, “Good, I’m starved.”

As Carlie looked up at her friend, she nearly dropped the dish she was holding.

Although she had Nicky’s voice, instead of a tall-ish blonde girl from Australia, there stood a petite brunette Latina, looking at her with a shocked expression.
